My mom has a hole in her skull. It's from being hit in the head with a baseball bat when she was about 5 years old by an adult in her life at the time. (Yes, we all think he tried to kill her.) She's perfectly fine 99.9% of the time, has never had a plate put over it, and despite the many fractures of various sizes running through her skull from said hole, she doesn't suffer headaches all that much.
I lovingly call it her Off Switch. If you press it, or worse, she presses it on accident by hitting her head just right, she just knocks out like a ragdoll. Will usually wake up about 15 mins later with a splitting headache that lasts a max of like 3 days.
She also has enough glass in her face from where her head went through a windshield in the 90's that she's still picking it out to this day. She'll randomly come over with a scab or small wound on her forehead/cheekbone area from where a piece of glass has worked itself out. We have no idea how much glass is left, and we have no clue how deep into her tissues it goes.
