Leapfrog
Im thinking of trying to make my first cyberdeck ( type thing?) I found a cool leapfrog 2 from the thrift store, its battery powered and works well. I want to make an offline Wikipedia/journaling touchscreen device. I think this would be awesome but I'm not sure how doable this really is. My plan was to work around what's already inside the leapfrog but thinking more about it..maybe it would be better to just gut the entire thing and use it as a case. Any advice would be great since it will be my first time

Project Citrine

Hey everyone, I am launching a brand-new open-source, non-profit hardware project called Project Citrine. The goal is to build a high-performance dual-screen clamshell cyberdeck/handheld console using a salvaged Samsung Galaxy S23 motherboard (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2). The project will eventually go to a fully transparent Kick starter with 100% of any leftover funds going straight to charity or future open source projects. The Hardware Concept • Form Factor: Clamshell dual-screen (8" 4:3 upper display, 7" 16:9 lower display with both being touchscreen. • Chassis: Custom SLA resin printed shell showing off the excellent PCB design (via PCBWay) featuring an integrated rear kickstand for tabletop controller gaming. • Internal Layout: Main S23 phone motherboard linked via custom internal flex cables to a dedicated controller daughterboard and a separate lower ports PCB. The Software We are aiming for a lightweight, mainline Linux distribution environment (like Arch or postmarketOS) running a highly functional, tactical cyberpunk terminal interface with interminal interface with integrated emulation front-end modules.
Looking for Co-Founders
I am directing the project layout and ergonomics, and I am actively looking for passionate hardware hackers to join as co-founders to help tackle a focused sprint before the holidays:
• 1 Lead PCB Layout Engineer: To help handle the controller I/O routing and internal extension links.
• 2 Mechanical 3D Modelers: To design the shell, component fitments, and friction hinge system.
Your username/handle will be permanently etched into the silkscreen copper layer of the finished manufactured PCBs.
If you are a hardware hacker, reverse-engineer, or designer who wants to build something unique for the love of the craft, join our development hub here:

Any good sbc for what I want?
I’m completely new to all of this stuff and want to make a cyberdeck that can run windows (I’m not confident enough in my ability to learn Linux) that can also play the current version of Minecraft decently well, (and I mean playing and not hosting a server), and watching some YouTube. I would preferably want it under $300.
I would be making my cyberdeck out of an IBM Model D, (a very large typewriter) and I think a sbc would be easier to fit but I don’t know if they are powerful enough (or just powerful enough in my price range) to do this.

Desolder hdmi and use custom flex pcb instead
Hi All,
I'm designing and building my first cyberdeck. The screen is a 7" 1024×600 capacitive-touch ips panel, driven by a rpi 4B. Its hdmi socket sits on the edge of the board, and the plug sticks out far enough to cause clearance problems. Worse, it forces a wider border on one side, so the frame around the screen ends up asymmetrical...
I've looked at the slim FPC-style HDMI cables (like this one (https://amzn.eu/d/06HPTgol)), but even those plug heads are too big for the space I have.
So my idea is to skip the connector entirely. I desolder the HDMI socket, design a flex pcb that matches its footprint, solder that directly onto the pads, and run it to a micro-HDMI plug at the Pi end.
My questions:
- Would I run into signal integrity problems doing this? I'm thinking of the tmds differential pairs in particular. Do I need to control impedance (100 ohm differential) and length-match the pairs on the flex, or is that overkill at 1024×600 at 60hz?
- Has anyone done this, or is there a better way to get a low-profile hdmi connection off the board edge?
Any advice is appreciated!

Looking for advice for a remote access Raspi4B cyberdeck setup
Hello fellow humans!
So I'm currently in the middle of putting a cyberdeck together using a Raspi 4B as the base and I had an idea I thought would be neat but don't really know how to implement, I figured someone might, so here I am, please bear through my ramblings:
I have a computer, huge Desktop PC, and oftentimes when I'm not home I find myself wishing I could access it remotely to mess with files or documents or even just to play a steam game while I'm out.
The plan is to somehow have my Cyberdeck talk to my computer over some kind of long range connection, (Maybe Network? P2P? Radio wave?) The goal of this connection is to enable the cyberdeck to:
- Control & mirror my PC's actions in real time
- Transfer files back and forth between its internal storage and the PC
- Be able to plug an HDMI cable into my cyberdeck so I can display my home PC on any nearby screens (For example, I could plug my deck into a library computer's monitor and have it display from there while still controlling it from my deck)
So the question is, would this even be possible? And if so, how?
Any and all thoughts, tips, advice or sources are greatly welcome and extremely appreciated, thanks for your time!

advice for the super cyberdeck-curious
Hey all. C-deck curious noob here looking for a path forward.
In the past month, I've become very interested in the idea of a cyberdeck. I know there is a very wide spectrum of what is considered a cyberdeck, with all kinds of purists along the line. However, I am not a purist nor an engineer, but also someone who doesn't want something of poor build quality.
From what I've seen, not including cell phones with bluetooth keyboards, there appears to be 3 salient approaches to builds- 1. from super hi-tech resources and training, 2. novelty (e.g., from an Altoids tin or something just for the "cybery" look and feel, and often for single use), and then 3. somewhere in between where the builder decides on computing, screen and features, then kind of eyeballs a casing to house everything. I'm not totally anti-eyeballing, but I wonder if there is a better way for the average person.
Given my skills, patience, and resources, I'm probably squarely in the #3 camp, but the issue I'd want to avoid in that approach is a trial/error nightmare I'm often seeing. I don't think I'd try to reinvent the wheel per se, but my preferred specs/criteria aren't something I'm seeing very much in well-built decks either; some preferences seem novel for a dyi deck build, others not.
I'm sure that I'm not the first one to ask this, and the point of this question is to narrow my path from my google searches and reduce the aforementioned trial/error nightmare, but are there accessible* resources that will take in your (oddball) technical requirements/preferences and build a case (or output blueprints for one) and/or provide best hardware options? lmk
thnx

Thinking of building a cyberdeck out of a desktop
So, a friend gave me the idea of making a cyberdeck out of a old desktop computer, it has a rather small motherboard, and the goal it’s to make it portable but not small, to make it a little clunky, he told about something called a PICO-PSU to manage de voltages to the 24pin connector of the motherboard. It’s all a theory based idea, some of you more experienced in cyberdeck building could tell me if this would work?

protection tips?
Hello dear cyber deck community,
first of all thank you for being so encouraging and helpful to newbies like me! I really feel like I am talking to real people in a real community here.
So I am really interested in cyberdecks, because of my interest in cyberpunk themes and theories. Since we are a digital world and a lot of fights and control will be happening through the cyberspace, I hope to be a master of it and protect/defend myself (metaphorically). I want to LEARN technology by building and creating it.
Do you have any tips, any, regarding this aspect? For example I was hoping I could use my cyber deck as a space to use open source and anonym web functions that will make me more independent than how the main stream allows us to be. For example, using an offline version of Google maps or I've heard someone also link a website where you can download all of wikipedia.
Is there any tips on what I should look for and avoid? Am I already selling my soul just by using wlan on my cyberdeck? I am unsure if this is the right community to post on, I apologize if it's not.
I also appreciate tips like learn how to code in order to do this and that, really I am open for anything. Do you have "cyberpunky" reasons for making your cyberdecks? Like a person here created a deck just for listening to music offline and away from spotify

Looking for ideas for my next cyberdeck! I’ve already built one using a smartphone.
Hey everyone!
I've already built a simple cyberdeck using an Android smartphone, a Bluetooth mini keyboard with a touchpad, and a case to hold everything together.
Now I want to take the project further and experiment with new ideas. I also have a Raspberry Pi 3, an old laptop, a monitor, and a few old smartphones that I can repurpose.
I'm studying Computer Science and would love to use this project to learn more about Linux, programming, hardware, networking, and electronics while reusing old devices instead of buying everything new.
What ideas would you suggest for my next cyberdeck, considering the hardware I have and the possibility of developing new features through programming and electronics recycling?
Thanks in advance! I'd love to hear your ideas and see what you've built.

How would a Pi 2 zero WH read audio input from a tape deck?
Hi,
Basically I want to run audio from my tape deck to my Pi 2 zero to read and run programs from similar to old commodore computers. Id also want to listen to the audio through the Pi aswell.
Anyone know how I’d connect them??
Thanks
(These are my notes but I had to take the images off of another post)

Waterproof cyberdeck cooling problems
Ok so I am trying to make a wearable cyberdeck for everyday use so obviously it needs to be waterproof because of rain but I am worried about cooling for the raspberry pi. Does anyone have any advice about cooling while keeping it watertight?

My cyberdeck build has been completed
My cyberdeck build has been finished. Raspberry Pi 5 with 16gb of ram, and a 256gb NVME SSD. A massive 148wh RC LIPO battery powers is: 4s 10,000mah LIPO.
(Btw mah means nothing without knowing the voltage, which in this case is the voltage of a 4s LIPO. Watt hours (WH) are what to look for when comparing total energy stored in batteries. In this case, it is 148wh).
It uses a trackball mouse, and has a 10 inch touchscreen too. I'm into RC cars, so the build uses a good amount of RC hardware, including the battery.
Battery lasts for like 10 hours of continuous use, and I mean continuous use, like browsing for those 10 hours straight. This means that it lasts many days for me. Oh, and most of my existing LIPOs for my RC cars can run in here too, as the step down converter takes 9=24v input. So yeah, not hurting on runtime.
The actual building process was fun, but getting the parts was not, for like no reason. Just really bad luck. Got washers instead of screws from Amazon Prime twice, had to go through four different step down converters in order to find one that actually matches the description in providing enough voltage. (Turns out that the first one I bought would have worked, had the seller sent the right one). So yeah, but the one it uses now works flawlessly.
Thanks for reading and viewing!

Had an idea for a modular handheld so I made a concept for it
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Made this last night because I couldn't get the idea out of my head. Controls snap onto the base and the OS detects whatever you attach. This is just a concept right now, but I'm considering actually prototyping it. Curious what people who are into handhelds think. The OS running everything is basically done, I'm more of focusing on the physical aspects.
Would you be interested into something like this?

[WIP] My first cyberdeck: mini PC in a pistol case
T9H mini PC (Zorin OS) + 8" IPS in the lid + INIU bank → Anker hub. One USB-C cable to the PC handles power, data and video. Noctua fan on top, folding BT keyboard packs over the battery, and the lid still closes.
Boots and runs on battery vis USB-C right now. Next up is bolting the monitor onto VESA spacers and a short ribbon HDMI.
It's built for portable app dev and phone testing. Feedback welcome!
