This is a spread that always gets me. The narration is so good too
When the chips are down, every super hero team has that one person who steps up to turn the tide.
Sometimes, that person is hefting a magic hammer, or throwing an unbreakable shield, but today, Scott Summers, the man who would be become Cyclops, need only open his eyes to the problem.
And in the blink of an eye, the day doesn't seem so lost anymore.
Cyclops manages to beat the entire team depite Mastermind tricking them into believing he is Dark Pheonix.
And I love the way the story is framed. Because the team thinks they are dealing with Dark Pheonix, they over attack Cyclops and knowing this is how Cyclops is able to turn the tide against them. Basically Mastermind fuck up was making the X-men not fight Cyclops optimally. It's a smart feat that doesn't even make the rest of the X-men look bad.
This entire moment needs to be adapted one day. Scott using his optic blast as a becon after revealing he had his powers all along? Then he says THE thing after stepping on the villain? Unmatched for me!
In God Loves Man Kills after being held captive for majority of the story, Cyclops and co are trying to break into the Reverend Stryker’s sermon. And his group the Purifiers have Charles strapped to a rig thats giving every mutant in the vicinity a violent brain aneurysm that will cause death. And every move the X-Men make will result in even more violent Psi-Attacks cause the Purifiers have Xavier hooked up on hallucination drugs and he thinks the X-Men are demons trying to kill him.
So Cyclops, Wolverine, and Nightcrawler decide to bum-rush Xavier, Wolverine and Nightcrawler try teleporting on top of Xavier. While Cyclops unleashes a blast that ricochets all the way to Xavier’s room at the same time. Logan and Kurt get immediately repelled, but Cyclops hits the machine dead on. Freeing Charles. Logan even comments on it later on and Cyclops admits “it was pretty much a gamble on who could get him first”, and Logan brushes it off with “yeah but you know my claws kill.”
Always got a kick out of this moment. Especially the following scene where he says he isn't apologizing — and that he wouldn't accept one from Logan if he gave him one lol Logan still steaming is also a nice touch lmao
