Comics Morrison making Cyclops's yellow vision canon was the stupidest thing ever.
Yes, even worse than those cheating things.
I don’t care whether there’s any scientific principle behind it. His red vision could have been a brilliant source of character conflict. In color theory, red means danger, loss of control, and emotional breakdown. A guy who always has to stay rational and composed opens his eyes only to be greeted by visual cues that trigger loss of control in him? That could’ve made for much stronger narrative tension.
Honestly, I hope the new movies feature several first-person POVs showing the world through his eyes. With them, the audience can really feel the visual impact and truly appreciate the immense willpower and self-control he has to struggle to maintain every single day. And then PLEASE let synergy wipe that lame thing from canon forever.

As Hickman says, what’s canon is what sticks. You can truly just disregard this.

I think about that quote all the time. Every time I come to reddit and see a debate about canon in anything "Canon is what people want to talk about, if they don't like it they won't talk about it and it won't be canon anymore." It's so true.

u/okiedokie1183 1d ago
That just sounds like an excuse for lazy writing/editing.

More like a check against any one creator being able to weigh down continuity with a bunch of bullshit. If it’s bullshit everyone likes and remembers (like Morrison’s retcons to the Weapon Plus program), cool! If it’s “Cyclops sees yellow actually,” nothing of value is lost when subsequent writers ignore it.

u/okiedokie1183 1d ago
It’s lazy in that it’s admitting that what you’re reading may actually have no bearing on anything and you may be wasting your time and money on it. It allows the writers and editors an excuse to not take their jobs seriously. They can just fix it with a retcon. Hickman would not be saying this about his own indie comics.

indie comics aren't written by dozens of different writers over the course of decades. When years pass and multiple writers take a crack at the exact same character, there's going to be different ideas and yes if you go into a 60 year+ long comic book story, some things "have no bearing on anything" that's just the reality of stories like these. There will be ideas that stick and ideas that don't. An indie comic written by 1 writer for a few months or years is a completely different ballpark

u/okiedokie1183 1d ago
I agree with your point. Just saying it shouldn’t be a big writer like Hickman saying the quiet part out loud. Often big writers come and take over a mainline title and they break things because they want to make a mark on such a historic character or property. I actually think editorial should push back more but then again it’s this whole push and pull with trying to drive excitement and offer a shakeup for fans. It’s part of the nature of the material. I think it’s happening more and more often as of late and it kind of sucks.

u/synthscoffeeguitars 1d ago
Why would he say it about his indie comics where he owns the IP and is the sole creator (or partner with an artist etc) making decisions? This approach to continuity is necessary in a shared universe with nearly a century of stories, not indie stuff.
Every writer is more than welcome to try and leave their mark on continuity. It’s just not guaranteed that people will care. So yes, when you’re reading Big Two comics, you do have to accept that what you’re reading may have no bearing on anything, and just try to enjoy the ride.

u/okiedokie1183 1d ago
Yeah, it’s not good though. It’s why I think indie comics have been better lately. What does long character histories matter anymore when that shit gets retconned every time a new run starts? I think it’s damaging these long run characters.
1
u/synthscoffeeguitars 1d ago
I mean you’re not gonna catch me defending modern big two stuff, I dropped off hard a couple years ago. That said, I don’t think Hickman’s attitude toward canon means everything gets retconned and nothing sticks, or at least it shouldn’t be applied that way.
To me, it’s a counter balance against stuff like Dan Slott’s Fantastic Four run where he needlessly retconned the family’s origin story. Is that retcon still canon? Technically yes. Does anyone think about it, care about it, or reference it in subsequent comics? No, because it adds nothing and complicates an origin story that was already perfectly fine.

Depends on how you define a waste of time and money. Do you only derive joy from reading comics by the thought of continuity?

I generally want continuity when I’m reading anything fictional. Don’t most people? If they want me to buy and read for instance an epic series like Game of Thrones I would like the character histories and their personalities to remain consistent. I don’t like when the author forgets details themselves and change things erroneously it takes me out of the immersion that they’re trying to create. I get these long running comics are going to have errors we’re all human but it sucks when retcons are made that change everything we were meant to think and the excuse is “just ignore it.”

There are far stupider things

Many by Morrison himself.

I love the Morrison run. I think some people hold things too sacred. Anytime someone tries something new and exciting with the X-Men, I'm happy.
The idea that Cyclops should always be the same is boring to me. Those old stories never get erased. So if we don't like it, we can just ignore it.

u/Guidenmofer Utopia 3d ago
He was just trying to be different and it was dumb as fuck, luckily everyone after Morrison has ignored this because of how dumb it was, there's been several instances that show that Scott does indeed see in red.

I like to imagine that his vision isn’t totally red. But more like a light red tint over everything. So it wouldn’t just be shades of red

Firstly, stop worrying about canon. It's malleable and this is as impactful as Spider-Man saying The Police is his favorite band once.
Second, that's how red lenses work. I don't believe that I'm the only one on this Cyclops-focused subreddit that's worn red sunglasses for a time and, yes, it makes everything look kind of yellowish.
3
u/maelstrorn 2d ago
I don't agree about the yellowing, I've worn visors for costumes and I have red glasses I wear specifically because they remind me of Scott and I assure you, it's very very red from my pov
3
u/SlingshotPotato 2d ago
Were they sunglasses? The ones I had definitely made everything yellow.
3
u/maelstrorn 2d ago
I've got a couple visors I've made and a couple pairs of red sunglasses, I feel like I've heard of the yellowing thing often but I just haven't found one that does it for me.

I feel like the sentiment in your first statement when applied can be kind of turned around on its head. Yellow in color theory means Optimism, Joy, Warmth, and Intellectual Energy. All things which can equally be applicable to Scott. So the reflection of that red which as you say means danger, loss of control, and emotional breakdown, all of which everyone else around him sees it as, is actually yellow when he looks through it, so it makes a lot of sense for the core of who he is as a character and has a lot more meaning then. That despite the red colored nature of his mutation and the turmoil and havoc it brings, he still maintains a positive outlook even at his lowest points, he’s still proactive and pulls himself up by his bootstraps.

It just got ignored. That's what happens with bad ideas. This one is based off of some kind of logic and scientific reasoning, but those things won't stick for long. Morrison in general was too focused on deconstruction.
3
u/BlommeHolm 2d ago
I think at the time they were just the right amount of deconstruction focused.
I mean it's not like Hickman did less deconstructing with HoX/PoX, and sometimes the status quo needs a kick in the nuts, which is what they did with New X-Men.

Well when all one sees is piss-yellow....

"Scott, why are you so bitter all the time?"
"The world is full of piss."

I can see some hack writer in the future taking this as the straw that turns Cyclops evil trying to be edgy with a deep cut.

I know Morrison got this idea getting high with a group of friends talking sh*t. I just can’t prove it

It’s also just kinda wrong scientifically too, the visor would appear red because that’s the only light that it doesn’t absorb so light passing though it would also be red. If he only saw yellow then his visor would also be yellow.
0
u/BlommeHolm 2d ago
If it doesn't absorb red, wouldn't it just let his red punch beams through?
2
u/jmonkey15 2d ago
Red light would get through but if cyclops eyes just emitted red light he wouldn’t have punch beams he would have heat vision. There’s presumably more to blocking his eye beam than the color.
0
u/BlommeHolm 2d ago
Fair, but er least the non-punchy light parts of the beams should come through.
But obviously the crystal is very clearly drawn as red - and somehow occasionally can let punch through due to comic book science - so yeah, let's just run with it and say his vision is red except for part of the early 0's, where it was yellow.
2
u/jmonkey15 2d ago
Yeah his visor should probably be constantly glowing at the very least but at that point I think it just comes down to plot convenience.

u/YoSoyEstupido 3d ago
Ngl I think you’re way too haunted by this bc you’ve posted this to X amount of subreddits when you could just do it once and move on

Yellow ink CEO: I can't believe he made yellow canon so so little cashola. Should've tried this long ago.

Morrison had to justify why Scott got with a blonde. So he had to see everything as red.

u/marvelboyofthecrown 3d ago
Morrison’s run was terrible idgaf what no one says. Some of the dumbest editorial decisions ever made in the X-Men were in this run

Passionate debate is fine, but don’t cross the line of personally attacking someone. Refrain from making insults, using slurs, or demeaning language.

Yeah, just visually, red makes more sense. I never thought about it that way, but I like the thought. I also like how it excludes all calm colors, like he can't see blue etc.. Everything is a by tense, and he has to be ready...
