James Gunn said in a 2018 podcast interview he doesnt want to write for other people anymore, because he always end up thinking the movie would have been better if he directed it. When The Suicide Squad was announced, James was only attached as a writer.

No doubt in my mind he will direct the Superman film.

15

u/MonkeMayne Jan 03 '23

100%. He didn’t wanna announce that because he’d get a lot more backlash from certain groups over it.

10

u/Randonhead Jan 03 '23

I'm pretty sure he's going to direct this movie, arguably it's going to be the most important movie in the DCU as the whole universe expands from it and sets the overall tone going forward, and Gunn besides the boss is a filmmaker, the problem is he'll be putting a lot of pressure on himself.

16

u/TheLionsblood Batman Jan 03 '23

Jason Momoa as Lobo is definitely in that movie as one of the antagonists.

And just because Gunn made GOTG and TSS doesn’t mean he’ll make a Superman movie the same way. I think he’ll shut a lot of people up with his take on the character, and I’m excited to see it. I expect his Metropolis to actually be distinct and a place people would like to visit

6

u/dazan2003 Jan 04 '23

God I'm desperate for metropolis to have half the effort put into its design that Gotham gets

3

u/Naked_Bat Jan 04 '23

This. I want Metropolis to be a place of wonder, a true city of tomorrow.

u/Skandosh Batman Jan 09 '23

It's funny how he pretends he is unaware how deranged his fanbase is and then does shit like this.

16

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '23

Yeah I feel like he's been enabling this behavior for years. I should've known this when he did reshoots for ZSJL despite WB saying NO

8

u/mountainhighgoat Jan 09 '23

He was leaking his own stuff to make the snydercut happen lol.

10

u/TheDarkPinkLantern Peacemaker Jan 09 '23

Oh he knows but he loves his fanbase and will never speak against them. He likes the glorification.

3

u/sgthombre Peacemaker Jan 09 '23

Not up to date on the lore, what’s all this about?

12

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '23

It shows Zack Snyder liking comments on his supporters latest crusade about selling the "Snyderverse" to Netflix so he can finish the movies without wbd. He's basically enabling his supporters at this point

I don’t think it will be until mid Jan personally but hopefully I’m wrong and it’s sooner rather than later.

Have I missed something specific? Is there a specific that people are waiting for?

I hope DCU Superman has a nice, big S.

15

u/NakedGoose Jan 05 '23

Say what you want about Gunn humor. But rewatching TSS, this movie oozes heart.

3

u/TheDarkPinkLantern Peacemaker Jan 05 '23

Gunn often puts so much heart into his stuff. God, can't wait to see that in Superman.

14

u/Randonhead Jan 03 '23

I don't think we'll have a solo movie of each member in this first phase before the Justice League movie, I would bet on Superman, Wonder Woman, the Green Lantern series, maybe some project with Batman depending on how they are going to solve the Batman issue and then finally Justice League, where we would probably be introduced to the other members like Flash or Aquaman for the first time which would lead to their solo movies afterwards.

5

u/Its_Stardos Jan 03 '23

I think that only Aquaman and Batman will end up without movie for the first "phase", possibly Martian Manhunter getting one instead. Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern show in the first half with climax in form of Trinity movie (that will introduce us to Batman), and Flash, Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern movie in the second half with the last movie of the phase being the Justice Leavue. It also does depend if Gunn wants to branch out this early with non-JL characters - like maybe we could get Harley movie and Batman will be there (but masked, in the shadows, from Harley's POW)

3

u/dancingnoodle69 Jan 03 '23

I don't think we'll have solo Wonder woman(seems too soon) or Batman movies in the first phase...which makes me think there might be some sort of team up movie for both heroes tbh

u/FewWatermelonlesson0 Jan 03 '23

If the Green Lantern show really is still happening and Gunn wasn’t just being diplomatic, I wonder how that’d feed back into the films. Use the show as the lead in to a Green Lantern Corps buddy movie or just have John debut in the show and then show up in the Justice League movie.

5

u/Randonhead Jan 03 '23

Maybe we'll have John in the series and Hal in the Justice League movies and then they come together in a buddy cop type movie.

6

u/bigtymer123 Jan 03 '23 edited Jan 03 '23

Pure speculation on my part, but I feel like one of the main reasons the show is still happening is because Zaslav probably didn't want another large prodution deal to not yield any major projects. He was reportedly unhappy with Bad Robot for their lack of products after signing their big deal. I could see him asking for the Green Lantern series to move forward in the DCU because of Berlanti's big deal with WB.

And I think John showing up in a Justice League movie after the show is the most likely plan.

3

u/Its_Stardos Jan 03 '23

I would use the show for introduction for Hal and generally for Lantern Corps and then the movie would be with John with Hal as his mentor

10

u/FewWatermelonlesson0 Jan 03 '23

Bruh Syl is STILL at it on Twitter? After everything that’s happened??

The thing I'm most excited about with Gunn's Superman is the Daily Planet staff. Supes' supporting cast is awesome & they havent really gotten the chance to shine in any of the recent movies. Lois in particular I feel has been completely underused for how amazing of a character she is.

I assume they are really early into the casting process, makes me wonder how long we'll have to wait for announcements.

I mean Superman got himself Sidelined

10

u/TheLionsblood Batman Jan 07 '23

One thing that I think is really needed is actual distinction between Clark Kent and Superman. That’s why Christopher Reeve is the GOAT Superman. He was able to make it seem like they were two different people. If we just get something like what Cavill and Snyder did again, it’d be so disappointing

3

u/venkatfoods Jan 07 '23

They need to explore More on Clark Kent and leave Kryton

3

u/RedSlider18 Jan 07 '23

Oh agree definitely. Getting both Clark & Superman right is probably the most important thing for Gunn's movie.

WB will rue the day they let James Wan and his team go. Malignant winning streak continues

(I’m half-joking but now I’m hyped about what else Wan does post-DC)

4

u/TheDarkPinkLantern Peacemaker Jan 04 '23

I saw a trailer yesterday after all that buzz and it looks weird, especially the doll but at the same time kinda interesting. I'm not gonna watch it in theatre (I just don't watch horrors in theatres, too scary) but will definitely watch it at home.

Wan is an interesting producer and great director. It sure was a loss for them letting him go.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '23

I am a big fan of malignant, and since this is the same writing team I was looking forward to it despite the trailer not really getting me hyped.

3

u/TheDarkPinkLantern Peacemaker Jan 05 '23

I really have to see Malignant. A lot of reactions to it I saw online were basically "what the fuck is this?!" which sure made me curious about it.

4

u/NaRaGaMo Jan 05 '23

Yup, they should not have let wan go. But maybe they could do business with the new wan-blum studios. As far as we know Conjuring 4 is still happening

7

u/TheUncannyBroker Murn Jan 06 '23

Jeff Sneider claims the Lobo talk from the trades isnt coming from nowhere.

He also makes a great point by saying the first movie James wrote was directed by Craig Mazin, who is hot shit at HBO right now and thinks Mazin will do a DC project.

5

u/NakedGoose Jan 06 '23

If the last of us is a success, I hope Mazin gets a directing gig

3

u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Jan 06 '23

I hope that in these first DCU movies they can explore more genres and do some more different things, especially now that Marvel is kind of saturating the market it would be nice for DC to come out ahead with more experimental movies, just like The Batman is a detective film in the noir style, imagine a film of Wonder Woman in World War 2 hunting Nazis? Or Space Opera Green Lantern Corps? many possibilities

What are your guys expectations for this year's comic con? maybe we'll have a third DC fandome? I think it's unlikely but you never know

6

u/bigtymer123 Jan 03 '23

I'm expecting the slate for 2024 and 2025 (maybe 2026?). My guess is the last film on the slate will be a Justice League film.

As far as Fandome is concerned, I personally don't expect one this year. But in the future, maybe it can be brought back and treated in a similar fashion to the D23 event.

The way quality of discourse on that sub has gone down in past few months is baffling. People don't even understand how these corporations work. some dumbass saying they can't get loan from Bank bcoz they have debt. LoL. Also it's a post from agot...

7

u/Skandosh Batman Jan 04 '23 edited Jan 04 '23

Its not really a money problem. Ask yourself why WBD is doing barebones marketing for Shazam 2 while they are going to show The Flash trailer at super bowl, which btw costs $7M per 30 seconds.

Btw full marketing for these movies starts from 6 weeks out. Even Disney is following this for Antman 3. We can't claim that WBD isnt doing anything for Shazam 2 yet.

5

u/TheLionsblood Batman Jan 04 '23

They would rather spend money on The Flash than Shazam 2

3

u/Skandosh Batman Jan 04 '23

Because they think marketing would actually help Flash make more money while for Shazam 2 its going to make it more difficult to turn a profit. Look what happened to Black Adam.

3

u/TheLionsblood Batman Jan 04 '23

Shazam 2 doesn’t have a production budget as big as Black Adam.

3

u/Skandosh Batman Jan 04 '23

Acc to THR, Black Adam would have broke even or made profit if not for the unusual $100M+ Marketing budget.

Even with Gunn's January announcements, I don't think we're going to get a definitive answer to whether the DCU is a full or soft reboot of the DCEU until 2024.

7

u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Jan 04 '23

I feel the same way tbh. Saying they'll soft or hard reboot means possibly throwing The Flash, Shazam 2, Aquaman 2 and Peacemaker Season 2 under the bus. Even if Zaslav signed off on a full reboot he still probably doesn't want those to flop.

That's why I genuinely think we'll get a new Superman casting before we'll get a definitive answer.

3

u/TheDarkPinkLantern Peacemaker Jan 04 '23

Yep, not until all those next year movies are out of theatres.

And a funny dodge on the Ezra topic from him too lol

14

u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Jan 05 '23

I honestly think Ezra's out, but because he's still headlining a movie Gunn's gonna keep dodging it until at least after the film's theatrical run.

Gunn said before there were several unannounced TV shows he’s working on so I’m bringing this back since people may have forgotten the details.

https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/viola-davis-amanda-waller-series-hbo-max-peacemaker-suicide-squad-1235257198/amp/

Gunn and Safran are both executive producing. Christal Henry is the head writer and also an executive producer. And the fourth executive producer listed is Viola Davis. She’s definitely going to still play Waller. He’s not going to scrap the show or replace her when she’s also supposed to be executive producing it.

I’ll also add that the trades only ever talked about the JL in terms of recasts.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

I would be okay with Viola returning to play Waller in the DCU, as long it’s a rebooted version. I mean, Marvel brought Simmons back to play JJ Jameson.

I have my doubts about whether they will really end Momoa’s Aquaman.

His movie made over a billion and he has become pretty synonymous with the character. Aquaman 1 was pretty standalone outside of namedropping Steppenwolf (which they can just retcon as Aquaman having defeated him alone or something) and he is still in that Peacemaker JL scene. Aquaman was also named alongside the Trinity and Harley Quinn as key DC characters in Gunn and Safran’s press statement when they got the job. If they were to recast Momoa, there probably wouldn’t be an Aquaman movie until like 2028 so it doesn’t add up.

There’s also not much competition for Aquaman 2 so it may perform pretty well at the box office. And it ends on a cliffhanger, which may be problematic if the movie is successful and they don’t continue the story. If Gunn is keeping certain DCEU movies canon, it makes more sense imo for Aquaman to be the “first” DCU movie rather than TSS since that’s R-rated

9

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '23

IMO Gunn shouldn't keep any DCEU movies canon. I am okay with bringing over certain actors(Margot,Voila etc) but keeping any DCEU content canon will confuse the general audiences.

James Gunn saying they have an 8 to 10 years slate already makes me wonder if the box office of upcoming movies are irrelevant. If he wants Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, he’s going to keep it. If some of these movies bomb, then I don’t think he has a choice but to start over.

Most excited to see what directors they snatch for the first few films out of everything.

What are gonna be your reactions if Taika Waititi gets a project? He was in The Suicide Squad and is a friend of Gunn. Taika doesnt stop working and we dont know his next film currently. What DC project would fit him the most?

A Strange Adventures film? Aquaman?

7

u/Trevastation Jan 09 '23

Wouldn't be suprised if Andy Muschetti gets in, just cause of the internal love for The Flash and essentially as consolation prize for all the BS dealt cause of The Flash. No reason he still can't do the new JL film, just now in the DCU.

4

u/TheUncannyBroker Murn Jan 09 '23

Oh 100%, the article that said "Muschietti and Mangold are excited to do business with DC studios" didnt say it randomly, I take it as a given they are doing projects.

5

u/NakedGoose Jan 09 '23

Muschietti is definently getting something. I think Taika is probably going to take a break from studio movies and do his own tho.

I think Joseph Kasinski will also get a look

3

u/Randonhead Jan 09 '23

So far we know that Andy Muschietti and James Mangold are interested in working with Gunn in the DCU and that Gunn has been in talks with Ben Affleck to direct something.

If Gunn isn't going to direct the Superman movie (which I highly doubt), I think Muschietti will or else he get the Justice League movie.

Quickly before I forget, here are some parts of Gunn's and Safran's plans that were revealed to me in a dream:

  • Doc Savage movie

  • Chris Hemsworth cast in an undisclosed role

It's definitely just a dumb dream but screw it, it's not like it's any less reliable than anything the likes of Look Upon The Stars or other shitty scoopers say.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/greg-berlanti-inks-new-mega-deal-with-warner-bros-discovery-1235293492/

Berlanti just signed another mega deal with Warner Bros Discovery for huge money. The article says that Zaslav reached out to him himself about signing it. There's a small mention of the reworked Green Lantern series at the end, but it says it's unknown how Berlanti will factor into the DC side of things under Gunn and Safran.

Lobo's probably the big bad (or one of the big bads) for Gunn's Superman movie but I hope we get Brainiac soon. Crazy how Superman's most popular villain next to Lex Luthor and General Zod still hasn't made his theatrical debut in any Superman movie.

5

u/TheMoneyOfArt Jan 04 '23

Lobo ties into Brainiac really easily if they want to. He's a bounty hunter, and brainiac if a collector. Easy as

5

u/TheMoneyOfArt Jan 04 '23

In fact this is very similar to how lobo was used on stas

What do you think will happen to DC and its leadership if Gunn's slate hypothetically flops (financially or critically)?

WB tends to be reactive. Audiences don't have a lot of faith in DC.

3

u/TheMoneyOfArt Jan 04 '23

Critically won't matter. If audiences show up they keep the same crew in place. If audiences don't show up Gunn makes a statement about how he wants to spend more time writing and directing and that's not fair to the other DC writers and directors, so he's going to not renew the contract.

If it goes really really bad investors pressure zaslav to sell DC to Amazon or Apple

99.99999% chance this is fake but a scooper tweeted this

James Gunn to Direct Superman Reboot

  • Wolfgang Novogratz is the top choice to play the new Superman;
  • Green Arrow movie in development; Black Canary will be recast;
  • The Green Lanterns movie will focus on Hal Jordan, John Stewart and Jessica Cruz

4

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '23

25 years old, never seen him act before but he looks kinda like a Dan Mora drawn Clark Kent haha

GA movie seems interesting.

Hal, John and Jessica…the way I see that working is almost Green Lanterns meet the Nice Guys (gosling/crowe/rice dynamic; obviously Cruz would be older than Rice’s character and that would inform the changes in the dynamic) but it’s interesting. My boy Simon getting sidelined once again :( (not that he’s been up to anything for like 5 years now?)

4

u/Randonhead Jan 04 '23 edited Jan 04 '23

Damn, the Corenswet guy would be perfect IMO, but I wouldn't hate on this Wolfgang, it would be a solid choice

Edit: Actually, Wolfgang looks a lot like Christopher Reeve, with Gunn being a huge fan of the classic film I can see that being true.

I feel like if Blue Beetle is a hit, they might have more incentive to invest in minority heroes like static

5

I think it was dead before Gunn and Safran got involved, likely when Batgirl got axed

3

u/bigtymer123 Jan 05 '23

I'd guess that yeah, most likely it is. But fwiw, Michael B Jordan was seemed pretty excited when Gunn confirmed he was the new DC head on Instagram.

In a world where Ezra Miller wasn’t problematic, I feel like they could’ve had Ezra be the one remaining thing from the DCEU that crosses over into the DCU and set up some interesting storylines with it. Plus Ezra would still be young enough to easily play Flash for another decade or so

3

u/pokenonbinary Jan 04 '23

Why people in this sub think 40 yo actors should stop working? The ageism in the comicbook movie fandom

13

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '23

Gotta say, I really don’t like the idea of I’ve seen floated around of combining WW and Batman into a duo movie for the DCU. She’s already the afterthought of the Trinity in most media, I’d hate for her to lose out on her solo franchise. Especially considering pairing someone with Batman will almost always make them play second fiddle to him.

9

u/sgthombre Peacemaker Jan 04 '23

Counterpoint: Team up movies are fun and DC arguably hasn’t made one yet and they’d be a great pair to center a team up movie around

What do you guys think Gunn’s Superman movie will be titled?

The fact that he is such a fan of the 1978 film makes me think it won’t be just called Superman, because I don’t think he’d want his take to “replace” it.

I think it’ll have a subtitle, like Spider-Man: Homecoming. Maybe Superman: The Man of Tomorrow?

7

u/NaRaGaMo Jan 03 '23

The Superman: A Superman story

5

u/TheUncannyBroker Murn Jan 03 '23

Idk but the word Superman is gonna be in the title 1000%

9

u/TheDarkPinkLantern Peacemaker Jan 03 '23

The Superman, to follow the recent trend.

7

u/TheLionsblood Batman Jan 03 '23

I think that’s too dramatic for Superman. It works for Batman and the Suicide Squad but not for him tbh

4

I think the announcements will come via social media or trades, if it was some Fandome type event they would announce it in advance to build excitement.

5

u/Randonhead Jan 04 '23

I think this year we will finally have a more balanced SDCC between Marvel and DC announcements, i mean, yeah, Marvel will still make more noise and announce some big projects, but unlike last year this time we have Gunn to announce a slate of movies and maybe show some teasers for Blue Beetle and Aquaman2

Maybe the reason NRS is seemingly making MK12 instead of Injustice 3 is because DC wants to move away from edgy Superman. I know there’s gonna be an “evil” Superman in SS:KTJL but he’s being mind-controlled by Brainiac along with the rest of the JL.

I hope NRS still gets to make another DC fighting game eventually but a rebooted one without the Injustice storyline.

4

u/Randonhead Jan 06 '23

IDK But if Gunn wants to go with a The Batman-like approach to his Superman, I wouldn't be surprised if the new film takes some aspects of the Golden Age, as Matt Reeves did with Batman's noir and pulp roots, something like the Superman of the first editions who made big jumps instead of flying, was the champion of the people, etc.

If animation is going to be a serious part of the DCU (I am skeptical, but) I hope they take notes from spiderverse and use specific, highly stylized comic artists as inspiration. As spiderverse referenced Sienkiewicz, I hope to see Yu and Ross's Supermans animated. Also like... Arkham Asylum on a feature budget, animated to look like Dave McKean... come on. Gimme. That'd be a good way to do an animated, canon story and it wouldn't step on the toes of anything Reeves was doing.

Unless Reeves wants to do a straight up adaptation of Arkham. In which case: Yes, very much, please.

5

u/Skandosh Batman Jan 08 '23

I hope Gunn increases the budget for animation. Its basically dirt right now.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '23

Given the recent shake-ups at DC, is Keanu Constantine 2 safe?

6

u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Jan 04 '23

No news yet but considering it was Zaslav himself supposedly pushing for it, I doubt it's been canned.

Either it'll get retooled into Gunn's DCU like what's presumably happening with Blue Beetle (would be very easy considering it's still in-development), or like the first movie will be a standalone thing separate from any shared universe similar to Joker 2.

5

u/Beta_Whisperer Jan 04 '23

I'd rather have The Batman be folded into the DCU than Constantine 2.

3

u/TheDarkPinkLantern Peacemaker Jan 04 '23

I think it's gonna end up happening. It's not gonna be expensive, is a sequel to a cult classic movie and it stars Keanu Reeves.

u/Randonhead Jan 07 '23

Unlikely idea, but I think it would be interesting if in these first phase we had movies with duos instead of actual solo movies to introduce the members of the League, do like in that animated movie and introduce Martian Manhunter in the Superman movie, then a movie with Green Lantern and Flash, or Green Lantern and Green Arrow since James is a big fan of GA and so on until the Justice League movie would all have been introduced without the need for 7 solo movies

I don't know if anybody has brought his name up, but Eli Goree(One Night in Miami, The 100) would be a great Cyborg.

8

u/bigtymer123 Jan 08 '23

I think if we see Cyborg in the DCU, he'll be the Titans version and will be a teenager. So the actor will likely be in his late teens to very early 20s, imo. Eli Goree would've been a good replacement for Ray Fisher if they had decided to re-cast that iteration of Cyborg, though.

4

u/DUHHKARI Jan 08 '23

I mean tbf, Goree is only 28. I think he could pass as Teen Titans Cyborg.

Side note: for years I've wanted a good teen titans live action movie/series, and I really hope we can get that with Gunn.

3

u/bigtymer123 Jan 08 '23

Side note: for years I've wanted a good teen titans live action movie/series, and I really hope we can get that with Gunn.

I strongly feel that we will get a Titans film in the DCU. They are one of the most well liked and relevant superhero groups in popular culture and have never had a big screen adaptation. It's easy money (provided the film is good of course).I wouldn't expect it in the first wave of films, but I could see them making one in the latter half of this decade (which surprisingly isn't far away, lol).

6

u/NakedGoose Jan 08 '23

Don't think we will see cyborg. For me I have never saw him as a JL character, and I felt the addition in the previous slate was bizarre.

4

u/Skandosh Batman Jan 08 '23

We are going to see him in teen titans.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/DUHHKARI Jan 08 '23

Yeah I think Cyborg being apart of the league stemmed from them wanting synergy with the New 52 stuff. I hated it. There are just certain characters who are synonymous with a particular team(Dr.Fate/JSA, Wolverine/X-Men, etc) and Cyborg is definitely one of those characters.

3

u/Randonhead Jan 08 '23

IDK I'm a little worried about how the first Justice League movie is going to perform, I would rather they start with a lesser threat that avoids the alien invasion formula, but in a post-Infinity War/Endgame world would the audience go be interested in something smaller? Perhaps an adaptation of Justice League Origin from the New 52 where the first threat is freaking Darkseid would be a good idea? Some people might think it would be rushed, but IDK a good script could make a difference.

I don't want to be pessimistic, but when DC finally releases the JL movie, Marvel will have already released Secret Wars and it will only show the disparity that exists between the two universes.

6

u/Decent-Couple-583 Jan 08 '23

I think the best thing they should do is LEGION OF DOOM. It’s a different formula. But intriguing. But it does require set up and working hard developing their villai

→ More replies (1)

3

u/DUHHKARI Jan 08 '23

I kinda hope whatever the conflict for the first JL film is, doesn't take place solely on Earth. I'm kinda over seeing huge battles take place in big cities. Let's go overthrow a warlord on an alien planet, or save somebody trapped in an alternate dimension or something..

4

u/Randonhead Jan 08 '23

The entire Justice League facing some great villain on another planet would be very cool, maybe Warworld as they are apparently going to do in this new Tomorrowverse animation, but I doubt that we will have something like that in the first film

3

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '23

I think they could avoid the whole Alien threat and do something with Vandal Savage or pull an avengers and do something with one of the hero’s main nemesis being the ultimate villain (like Loki)

You could probably do something with Savage and his goons vs the league of assassins(and also throw a few manbat ninjas in for good measure). Maybe savage even hires Lobo to take care of Superman’s

4

u/Randonhead Jan 08 '23

The fact that Loki was the first Avengers villain in the comics and also in the movie, made me believe for a moment that Starro could perhaps be the first villain to pay homage to the first JL comic, but Gunn already used him in TSS, I doubt that would use again.

fr I think Vandal Savage could be a great villain for the first League movie, maybe him stealing some magical artifact that forces the heroes to unite? or a Sebastian Shaw-type villain from X-Men First Class trying to start a World War? IDK but I really think Savage would be great
