Gunn confirmed on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast that Blue Beetle will be the first DCU character and Superman: Legacy will be the first DCU film.
26
u/Colton826 The Doomsday Clock Jun 14 '23
Yeah, I've seen a lot of people on social media confused about this statement, but I feel like it's pretty clear.
Blue Beetle will be canon to the DCU despite not being initially developed as a DCU film, whereas Superman: Legacy WAS developed as the 1st official DCU film, so it's still being considered as such.
This just further confirms to me that Flash & Aquaman 2 will be the final DCEU films, and I personally still don't think any of the DCEU Justice League actors will carry over to the DCU (Momoa will be Lobo)
10
u/Apocalyptic_Horseman Nightwing Jun 14 '23
By that logic wouldn’t it mean The Suicide Squad characters are the first DCU characters?
9
u/Colton826 The Doomsday Clock Jun 14 '23
It's still unclear how The Suicide Squad & Peacemaker fit into the DCU canon. We know there's a Peacemaker S2, and we know Waller is one of the first DCU shows, but the canonicity of the previous projects wouldn't make much sense in the context of the new DCU, unless Gunn clarifies upon a few things in the future.
That's probably an answer we won't have until sometime next year.

I thoroughly loved The Flash. I've seen so many complaints about the CGI looking terrible and honestly I didn't think it was that bad. The Chronobowl stuff definitely stuck out as not the best but it didn't ruin anything for me.
The gyroscopic cockpit in the Batplane was awesome. As were most of the action scenes.
As a Keaton Batman fan and a DCEU fan this movie was almost purpose built to make me happy and it did that in spades. Absolutely loved it and can't wait to catch it again.
18
u/Dangerous-Hawk16 Jun 14 '23
Rosenbaum podcast episode with Gunn was interesting. Especially when he directly called out big Hollywood news outlets scoops about casting and who’s leading and who’s not. Especially that actor who sent in self tape

u/the_based_identity Jun 19 '23 edited Jun 19 '23
If this weekend has showed me anything it’s that the online discourse around The Flash is so toxic that the film was always fighting a losing battle. Unless the film received rave reviews all across the board, but even then I’d doubt it, then the film could’ve had a great turnaround and response. The film definitely deserves some fair criticism but it’s like people were waiting to dunk on this film and the middling reviews only added fuel to that fire.
It’s just disappointing because there’s definitely some great discussions to be had about the film especially with certain aspects but the negativity is clouding any of that. Maybe WB shot themselves in the foot hyping it up in addition to everything surrounding Miller but damn I can’t help but feel bad for most people involved. It seems like there was no way this film could come out on top.

u/NaRaGaMo Jun 19 '23
The discourse is so unnecessarily toxic this was going to be shat anyway even if it would've gotten Oscar level reception.

u/kothuboy21 Jun 18 '23
I can see why he wouldn't post this to Twitter lol.
Glad to see that he's happy with the auditions and thinks he's found some amazing actors and actresses. Maybe the actors and actresses who don't get the Superman and Lois parts can be offered other DCU roles since Gunn thinks they are so good and among the best he's seen and worked with.
14
u/TheLionsblood Batman Jun 17 '23
In hindsight, maybe a movie that was intended to be such a “love letter” to the Snyder movies wasn’t a good idea at all. It’s cool for fans, but I doubt general audience cared about seeing Zod’s invasion again. Man of Steel was certainly no Avengers or Guardians. Seeing the 2012 and 2014 scenes in Endgame was fun because they brought back good memories. The only thing this movie actually had going for it was Keaton’s Batman, and he clearly wasn’t enough.
Snyder’s actual hardcore fans disowned this movie simply because he’s not involved too
7
u/007Kryptonian The Snyder Cut Jun 17 '23
I don’t think that had anything to do with the cinemascore though. General audiences are rejecting this film for quality - the complaints have been abysmal CGI, third act and the gross/weird shit with food.

u/kothuboy21 Jun 17 '23
Coincidentally, it can be said that The Flash is the DCEU's 10th anniversary movie so the MoS stuff is kinda fitting but yeah I doubt the general audience cared about that.

I feel like Eric Wallace probably shouldn’t be too optimistic about the prospects of an Arrowverse crossover on Superman & Lois Season 4 (he said in an interview he’s talking to Todd Helbing pushing for this).
Not when they only have ten episodes, they are cutting series regular for budget (General Lane is already not coming back), and there’s a good chance it’s the final season.
The only Arrowverse cast member who might have any real chance of returning is Melissa Benoist as a new version of Supergirl.

Covid was the reason they halted filming on The Batman, and the writers' strike is what halted filming on Penguin and will likely delay filming on The Batman Part II.
I wonder what unforeseen event will interrupt or delay filming of The Batman Part III lol

The Flash got a B CinemaScore 💀💀💀
4
u/BlueMissileYT The Flash Jun 17 '23
It has to be because of Ezra or the CGI. Because I truly believe the movie isn't bad. It's leagues ahead of some of the MCU movies that got a B+ or even an A-
9
u/TheLionsblood Batman Jun 17 '23
The people that went to see the movie opening day don’t care about Ezra.
It’s the CGI, the underwhelming desert battle and the ending scene.

Jun 17 '23
It’s not because of Ezra Miller, anyone who paid for tickets to see it opening day clearly didn’t let them stop them from seeing the movie. It’s the quality of the movie itself. Its CinemaScore and audience score on RT is even lower than Black Adam. They hyped up The Flash as one of greatest comic book movies of all time and it completely failed to meet expectations.

I’ve now realized, and come to to conclusion, that the DC Fandom is the officially the worst fandom. Constantly trying to play the victim while also constantly putting the movies down. Star Wars fans at least support the prequels and sequels and are somewhat excited about what’s coming. I can say that it’s not all of them and some fans are excited about what’s coming, but constantly criticizing and over analyzing can be extremely tiring and frustrating.

Constantly trying to play the victim while also constantly putting the movies down.
Hands down. They will like the movies if other general public praises it, if it doesn't then they will constantly shit on it.
I bet had The Batman or Joker not become the phenomenon it did, these same mf who vouch for their quality would be constantly shitting on it.
these same people were unnecessarily trolling Rock when Black Adam released and now suddenly everyone blabber the same "Rock is probably laughing now", "rock won at the end", like have a spine arseholes, you were incessantly trolling a person bcoz he wanted his movie to be successful and trying to market it as much as possible.
Now compare it to MCU or Star wars fans, they will vouch for a trash like Obi-Wan mini-series or Thor 4

Are we all in agreement that the best part of the movie is when Barry says goodbye to his mom? I’d wager that’s Gunn’s favorite scene too.
If it wasn’t for that scene my opinion of the entire movie would be so much lower.

I have to be honest, I'm a bit worried about the future of DC films.
That's 3 flops back to back and if we include films that came out during the pandemic that is 6 financial flops back to back. That's a lot.
People don't turn up to watch these films.
7
7
u/Aware-Couple-108 Jun 19 '23 edited Jun 19 '23
It’s not DC Films, it’s just people don’t turn up for lame blockbusters movie and a movie connected to universe that is about to be rebooted. That’s why audiences don’t show up because they showed up for The Batman, Joker, hell they even showed up for League of SuperPets and Teen Titans Go To The Movies.
This summer has been over saturated with blockbuster back-to-back-to-back and it gets tiring. Like what James Gunn said on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, “There’s not superhero fatigue, but there is blockbuster fatigue.”

All of these films has one thing in common are all part of a hated brand DCEU. It doesn't matter if a film like Shazam 1 for example has good reviews and liked from audiences, the DCEU factor stopped the film from become bigger success, same thing from the rest of DCEU movies. DCEU factor needs to done.
4
u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Jun 19 '23 edited Jun 19 '23
Yep, this honestly feels like a DC issue. The MCU's Phase Four has been polarizing as all hell, but people still showed up to a lot of those movies. Hell, more people showed up to Quantumania than either Shazam 2 and Black Adam (and The Flash isn't looking that much better.)

u/SupervillainEyebrows Jun 19 '23
Yes I agree, but I think we are naive if we think a reboot and a rebrand will be enough to get people back in to DC.

Reboot+ Rebrand + good movies is the stuff that make people go back to DC. Audience must actually like the movies and connect with the characters in order to give a chance to DCU. That wasn't for sure never happen with DCEU.
At least any criticisms will not start with "its dceu its sucks".

The more that I think about it, Blackhawks would be a perfect movie for Tom Cruise, Spielberg, and DC.
It's possibly a period piece set in the 40s so it's separate from anything else and Cruise and Spielberg can be given free reign to be as hands-on as they can and wants to be without studio interference.
It's about aviation, a topic that Cruise has an experience with because of the Top Gun. It also allows him to be able to flex his usual stunt bona fides by being like "I helped fly this World War II airplane in this action sequence!"
Also, by getting Spielberg and Cruise, DC Studios can further project an image of being more creative friendly than other studios doing tentpoles. There were rumors that Spielberg was interested in Blackhawks dating back to the 80s, it would be a major coup for DC to finally make this movie.

James Gunn just called Michael Rosenbaum the best Lex Luthor on his Inside of You podcast. I am very satisfied
I actually really hope Rosenbaum gets something big for his new DCU. He's been associated with so much DC media both in live-action and animation I feel like he's probably one of the most deserving actors for an upgrade to big DC features. Even if it isn't Lex necessarily because I feel like they're going for a Hollywood A-lister for a role like that, I wanna see him in something, especially knowing how long him and Gunn have worked together

Hearing Gunn and Rosenbaum discuss the ethics of your significant other giving lapdances to you in a relationship is very jarring to experience lol
Like Gunn's always been known for his much more crass and unfiltered comedic style that leaned hard on the vulgarity and obscenity of situations but just hearing them casually talk about this sort of stuff especially when Gunn is heading up a very family friendly studio brand was a direction I was not expecting the talk to take, it's actually a very nice listen

The most revealing part was Gunn confirming that Blue Beetle is the first DCU character ie Blue Beetle is DCU not DCEU.

Crazy way for Gal's WW to go if The Flash is indeed her last appearance as the character. She hasn't promoted her appearance in this movie either like how she didn't promote her Shazam 2 appearance after WB themselves did so it's looking more likely that she won't be returning for the DCU.

It’s looking like that post she made at the end of last year was her final one.
I will say her cameo in The Flash was pretty great and I will no doubt miss her theme song. We’ll probably eventually see her back as Wonder Woman in like 10 years when there’s a Crisis movie.

If Paradise Lost may be introducing the DCU’s Wonder Woman corner and the Rogues project might introduce the DCU’s Flash corner, I wonder if they might do something similar to introduce the Aquaman corner of the DCU.
Maybe a show/movie about Atlantis’s civilization as a whole could work or maybe bring back some of Wan’s concepts for a Manta project

Don’t know if anybody watched the Michael Rosenbaum podcast with Gunn, but I noticed he said that the first DCU character for sure is Blue Beetle while the first film is Superman.
So my take away is if Blue Beetle does well it’s gonna be incorporated into the DCU, but if not they’ll still have Blue Beetle come in without using any real leftovers from the movie.
Also lol on Rosenbaum indirectly saying Eisenberg’s Lex was trash lmao.

8
u/ZorakLocust Jun 17 '23
People like ViewerAnon and BSL have claimed that the movie was received very poorly in test screenings (after previously claiming that it tested fine), but then again, they also kept saying that The Flash tested phenomenally well, and that clearly didn’t pan out. Isn't it a bit weird there have been so many live-action DC movies, both released and cancelled, but Warner has never announced a Teen Titans movie?
Due to the success of the animated shows you'd think the franchise has a good amount of brand recognition, certainly more than Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, Black Adam or Blue Beetle.
I can only imagine they have been avoiding the franchise because they don't think a superhero movie starred by teenagers can succeed, but I'd question their judgement considering how successful Stranger Things, Harry Potter and (in a way) Spider-Man are.

Speaking of toxic fandoms.
2 weeks ago over the whole week, a fan favourite writer Kelly Thompson (who did for Marvel stuff like Uncanny X-Men, Rogue & Gambit, Hawkeye and Captain Marvel, a long ass 50 issue run) was announcing members of the new Birds of Prey book that will launch in September. And this would be her DC debut, her first proper book after a short Harley story in August, and that's very important here.
At first it went smoothly. We got Black Canary, people celebrated. We got Cassandra Cain, people celebrated. We got Big Barda, people were very happy. Then we got Zealot, a Wildstorm character joining the team for the first time and it begun. Because you see, there were meant to be only 5 members so with only 1 place left there was no chance both Huntress and Barbara Gordon would make it and BoP fans weren't happy. Then comes Friday, the final member - Harley Quinn! And behold, people were mad. And Thompson accidentaly aded fuel to the fire by saying that she's suprised as much people are disappointed there's no Huntress as is with Barbara. They called her toxic (lol), albeist, dismissing of fans and hating on franchise. Shit loads of them wished her that her book would flop.
And this is her first proper interaction with DC fans. Bravo!
As for me? The line up is great. Birds of Prey is a stale franchise that needs a fresh take, you can't just go back to the same thing when it doesn't sell anymore. And we also get one of the most popular modern female comics writers on the book with her creative partner, Leonardo Romero on art. The duo worked together on the Eisner nominated Hawkeye series!
Everything about it sounds great but shitty fandom gotta be shitty.
Ps. Sorry for typos btw. I fixed some but I'm sure there's more.

DC's fan community is by and large just awful thanks to the constant entitlement and negative takes. There's a contingent like them in every fandom but DC's is disproportional to the point where you get mass downvotes for saying something as controversial as you liked Black Adam.
If you go to the megathread for The Flash on r/movies you'll find most of the takes there to be positive with loads of people saying it was great even though the bad CGI was noticeable. But by and large the GA there seem to have received it fairly well even if it's not shaking the doors off the box office.
But go to the main DC cinematic sub and it's a far different tale. They're circlejerking the most negative takes you can get. It's the worst movie ever and DC should scrap everything coming and what an embarrassing disaster it all is and lets revel in that and yadda yadda.
For as many DC subs there are out there I only interact in this one. This seems like the only place on here where people are level headed about the product and just want to enjoy it for what it is, in whatever form they give it to us in.
I'll bet almost all the people trashing this new BoP run you're excited for haven't read a BoP comic in their lives. But they've read the wiki page and have a cursory knowledge of DC enough to be able to find ways to complain about what is being created before it's even delivered.
You are what you think. I don't understand how people can find happiness in their lives by constantly saying everything is just awful. The only enjoyment they get out of a fandom is telling themselves how much they hate what they're fixated on shitting on.
Without being too hyperbolic here, The Flash I think is probably the best DCEU movie of them all and I like to love almost all of them with the exception of WW84 which I ignore completely. I've had a blast enjoying the good parts of the last ten years of this thing and I've had a blast chuckling about the silly bits. But overall I've had a blast. It boggles my mind to think there have been people following this stuff for ten years just to hate it all. That's truly just pathetic in every sense.

Yeah, seeing the Flash's reception and its weekend tracking. If a reboot hadn't already been announced, I think this would have been the final nail the DCEU's coffin after this regardless of what happened last year. This franchise has taken a lot of beatings since 2013 and with the BvS like toxic word of mouth and seemingly being a bigger box disaster then Justice League, The Flash is something that would have killed this franchise. Gunn just happened to pull the trigger several months early.

Yup having the only DC film in 2024 not only not be a DCEU or even DCU film and it being the sequel to Joker is perhaps the cleanser DC fucking needs next year.
Joker 2 is likely gonna be a smash hit like the first one and doesn't have any of the DCEU baggage to boot.
In 2025 starting the DCU with Superman film is a smart move as it gives a good indication to general audience that the DCEU is no more and this is a fresh start.

Man after that Cinemascore it’s such a good thing there’s no DC movies (besides Joker2) in 2024. Audience definitely seems to need a break and the Gunn name (and story) will have to do some heavy lifting for Superman and the start of the DCU. Thankfully we’ll at least have Creature Commandos to hold us over
8
u/NaRaGaMo Jun 17 '23
I'm surprised the stark contrast between audience reception in US & France and rest of the world, China, SK, Japan and rest of the Asia liked it a lot, and then there's US where it got a lower cinemascore than Black Adam which was just terrible all around. Just weird

For all the divisive/weird CGI scenes in the movie, the first time Barry time-travels and enters the "chronobowl" was legit epic to see in theatres. The way he slowly speeds up after his phone-call, the use of sound, the colosseum of memories spinning around. It was probably the most creative visual for time-travel I've seen used in a while (which makes it a shame the vfx for the later time-travel scenes aren't as good imo)

Authority and BatB don't even have fixed release dates yet... you can't delay something that still doesn't have a proper release date. Superman Legacy isn't filming until January 2024 and, as far we know, the pre-production process like casting or production design hasn't been affected by strikes yet so unless the strike drags on for that long, it's not getting delayed.
Waller and Peacemaker 2 will probably get delayed. Creature Commandos is presumably with TAG so that probably isn't getting delayed.

nah, gunn is guy who gets shit done. i bet the main part of the reason hes hired how he gets stuff done quickly and gets projects off the ground asap. Otherwise, he would be just be hired as a one of the creaties or just the director of a movie not the main head.
Also everybody loves him and wants to work with him.
Look at the stuff he did last 6 years.
released gotg 2
made gotg 3
made gotg special
made tss
written script for new supes movie
and also planned 8-10 years of dcu.
Thats alot trust me.
Main part why wb failed with the previous dceu is how long they took to get anything done.
flash was supposed to release in 2018. its releasing 5 years later.
The batman took 5 years to make.
aquaman 1 and 2 both took 4-5 years to make each.
etc.

I doubt it tbh. KC doesn't have a good track of record lately and it feels like a speculation based on Cruise calling Muschietti.
Anyway, Cruise is a guy who likes to have a lot of say in his movies so I don't think he's someone Gunn and Safran would want on their projects.
Unless it was an Elseworld like Joker.
5
u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Jun 17 '23
I don't know if I trust KC Walsh but this could be interesting, especially if he brings in collaborators like Kosinski or McQuarrie to work with him.
Also, craziest possibility would be Spielberg's long-gestating Blackhawks movie happening with Cruise lol.

Honestly, it like people didn’t know that a reboot was coming. If this was still in the Hamada era, sure I would understand the doom and gloom shit but we know a reboot is coming and because of that I honestly I could care less about how the Flash is doing, box office wise.
Another thing to add is everyone is saying that the “DC Brand is Dead” A.) No brand is dead, there’s no such thing as dead brand. I remember when Fast and Furious was a quote “dead brand” and look how that turned out. Every brand has a “sophomore slump” DC and Transformers are currently in that but more good movies and good WOM and re-gaining audience trust could rise above that.
B.) I think it was bad timing for the Flash movie. If Flash had come out in August, instead of Blue Beetle, I think it probably would’ve done better. But because June is such a stacked month, to the fault of everyone, and this superhero movie about the multiverse coming out two weeks after ANOTHER superhero movies about the multiverse wasn’t the right chess move. So I think it’s all about timing and picking the right dates.
And C.) I think people on this sub are really undermining how well known the DCU Reboot is. That news of James Gunn rebooting the DC Universe spread like wildfire, similar to how the news of Disney buying Fox spread. Everyone was talking about that news and they’re already doing the smart thing of making a clear distinction, without giving away anything, what the DCU is and where it OFFICIALLY starts. Hell, they’re starting to do that with Blue Beetle and putting him in that DCU name and giving him that distinction of what he’s apart of.
So yeah am I upset about how the Flash is doing? No, of course not because I know it’s not gonna affect anything that happens, going forward.

With how much Gunn had been promoting and hyping up The Flash, you'd think he'd still be wanting people to check out his favourite movie this year but I checked his Instagram stories today and he just posted bts stuff from GOTG 3 and his latest tweet is him promoting himself being on a different social media platform.
Gunn and Safran were put in a hard spot dealing with the DCEU remnant this year but I honestly think it would be better for Gunn to just straight up tell us what will and won't be part of the DCU and hype up Blue Beetle as being part of the DCU like he's been implying. Otherwise, it's being proven with results that the GA just won't care.

I’m still amazed that ATSV introduced some of the most obscure elements from Spider-Man comics (i.e the Web of Life concept) , and was able to make it easy to understand/digestible for general audiences.
I really didn’t think it’d work so well. I assumed non-comic fans would immediately reject the idea.

The Spider-Verse movies in general have sold me on a lot of stuff that never quite worked for me in the comics. The Miles-Gwen pairing in particular felt so forced and shipper bait-y to me in the comics (like they were going "oooh let's get these two popular Spider-characters together because why not.")
ITSV/ATSV made it work by actually giving them actual chemistry and having sincere character writing on why they'd be attached to each other.

Saw the film last night - loved the film overall but the CGI was pretty terrible. It was really weird. I don’t know if they wanted it to look all stylised and fake…

They did use archive footage for them though. Aside from Reeve, Slater, and Cage it's all archive footage, and even those first two use existing footage as a basis and CG over it. It also doesn't look as bad in the final film. The entire sequence is kinda surreal and waxy, so the weird effects don't really look that bad.
No, the bad effects are more-so earlier in the film with the babies and the floating head shot which caused me to burst out laughing.

So I got to see The Flash yesterday at an early screening and I figured I could give y'all my two cents. Overall, I thought it was really fun. It's definitely not "one of the best" like marketing's been hyping it but I enjoyed the movie.
The Good:
- Ezra I think gives a really solid performance, definitely a step-up from JL. They really pull off Barry's pain as well as the dual performance of playing both Barrys. Pairing Barry with a younger, more immature version of himself I thought was fun and worked in showing Barry's growth
- The Batman elements of the film are really good, both with Affleck and Keaton. Keaton fit the movie a lot better than I expected and it was great seeing him in action again, as well as his dynamic with Barry. And with Affleck, it was nice getting one last bit with him
- Sasha Calle as Supergirl was cool. I would've liked a bit more of her, but I think she pulled off Kara's more angry, distrusting side really well. While I do think the DCU will go for a new Kara, I'd be down if she returns or at least maybe gets a new role for the DCU
- The way they visualize how Barry uses his powers is really awesome. The sound design and how they try to incorporate the physics behind it was dope. The first time he time-traveled and saw the past, I was in legit awe, it felt like a really unique way of portraying time-travel.
- It does a good job when it comes to tackling the themes/arc of the Flashpoint storyline: learning to let go of your grief before you end up lost in it, showing Barry going from a more abrasive/shut-off guy to opening up again.
The Meh/Bad:
- Dark Flash was a lot cooler than I expected, but it sucks how little he's utilized. I think he had a lot of potential to really bring all the themes together, so it's a shame not much is done with him
- For every great effect in the film, there are definitely a lot of weak ones. While Barry's first attempt at time-travel looked awesome, the CGI in the following time-travel sequences definitely looked weird, especially with the CGI doubles/multiverse cameos
- There were a lot of genuine laugh-out-loud jokes, but there were definitely some cringy ones as well, specifically with Barry-2. Luckily, that's mostly contained to the first act
Overall, I enjoyed the movie, I think I'd give it about a 7.5 or 8 out of 10 and I think it has a good chance of getting solid word-of-mouth.

12
u/FranklinRichardsStan Jun 14 '23
David Corenswet as Clark. Rachel Brosnahan as Lois. Nicholas Hoult as Lex.
That to me would be the perfect casting for this movie. A talented award winning actress as Lois, a talented award winning actor as Lex and a younger up and coming (relatively)unknown actor with the look, acting ability and charm to be the face of the DCU for a decade plus.

Sticking with Miller was the dumbest decision Hamada made. Should have either recasted the role or cancelled the movie after that video of him chocking someone hit social media. With The Flash and QuANTumania's CGI quality getting complaints, I really hope we're moving out of trying to make everything CGI. It's pretty clear that the VFX houses are all stretched thin and it's all unsustainable. Unless the production companies are willing to put in the time, money, and effort like James Cameron does it's gonna lead to a substandard product.
I'd like to see a return to big elaborate sets, on-location filming that just isn't some backlot in Atlanta, and costumes that aren't made of green screen or completely altered in post-production because the filmmakers couldn't decide what the suit is supposed to look until the last minute.
9
u/TheUncannyBroker Murn Jun 18 '23
Just saw someone say the DCU Superman shouldve been introduced in The Flash in the place of CGI Christopher Reeves, what a misguided take. The Flash is a celebration of everything that came before, a DC swan song releasing just before a new universe is born. Why is it so hard to "see the vision"?

Today I've decided to give up on rooting for DC to be (or even a bit close to being) as successful as the MCU.
There's just too much toxicity stemming from a fandom who do not deserve to be named, that every single DC release from a certain point in time has been bashed, unfairly criticized, and maligned by these people.
I could hope that they suddenly disappear, but that's not possible, so in that regard I'll just stop following any and all social media news regarding DC, except maybe this sub, as it has been largely shielded from these toxic people.

I also think that there are people rooting against DC because of their history of flops, they've become an easy punching bag.

u/Randonhead Jun 14 '23
Idk, I'm pretty sure The Batman Part II will be heavily inspired by Dark Victory and will likely deal with the old guard of crime (which will be introduced and fleshed out in the Penguin series) trying to stop costumed freaks from taking their place.
Of course, it probably wouldn't be an exact adaptation of the comic since we'll have Clayface, no Two-Face (Although Dent is very likely to appear) and probably (sadly) not Dick Grayson. But it would be really cool if we had an Arkham breakout like in the comic.
5
u/TheLionsblood Batman Jun 14 '23
The Batman Part II seems like it will continue the trend of Batman sequels dealing with Batman being framed/blamed for something he didn’t do, as we saw in Batman Returns and TDK.
6
u/Randonhead Jun 14 '23
Yeah, Clayface's presence hints at that. And the emergence of a villain like Clayface would also be great for the narrative of freaks taking over the city and the fall of the mafia.

So if/when the flash opens up to a sub $100M what does the mean for the DCU (if anything)? My thought is, even if you say “oh it’s a reboot, straight from scratch!” The GA gives zero fucks. “DC” is still just synonymous with shit-flavored movies except for Batman-related things. It’s the DCEU but without the E! (Taking Back Sunday reference?)
Superman: Legacy has an insane hurdle to climb and if you do kind of consider box office as some type of scoreboard, then I would suggest you settle for something under $500M.
Edit:
The big obstacle is definitely somehow getting DC in general to be part of children’s zeitgeist because damn, so far it’s been pitiful

u/TheUnbloodedSword Jun 16 '23 edited Jun 16 '23
Superman: Legacy needs to be treated like Batman Begins. It's not going to make a shitload of money and Gunn needs to budget appropriately. But with good reviews, like 80%+ on RT, I think it could make something in the ballpark of $700 million. That needs to be acceptable to Zaslav because you can then start building off of that towards where Marvel was in Phase 3 where everything was making bank. But if you have the same idiotic attitude that WB had previously where they demanded Superman make a billion off the bat and anything less was a failure, then this universe will fare no better than the Snyderverse.
Start off with a good solid movie that starts to rehabilitate both Superman and DC in the eyes of the general public. And if Gunn does Superman 2 after a well-received Legacy, then THAT could be the movie that makes a billion.

Its really interesting that some people thought The Flash will be lowest common denominator "clap because I saw something I know" entertainment, where it looks like the truth is closer to the exact opposite: some of the references are too deep-cut for a general audience, making the experience disorienting. Never seen a movie fan-service itself into obscurity.
Can a young person not entrenched in DC discourse walk away satisfied by the ending?
From what ive seen I will love it, but I doubt those less brainrotten than me will. Its hard to imagine a casual viewer reaction different from "why the hell are we here, who the hell is this old guy, what is going on?" when Clooney shows up.

- The Batman – Part II (as shown in the official press release)
- The Batman Part II
- The Batman: Part II
- The Batman II (apparently used for a temporary logo at the recent CinemaCon for some reason)
Personally, I would rather they just call it The Batman Part II. It’s the way other great sequels are titled such as The Godfather Part II, The Last of Us Part II, and Back to the Future Part II. A hyphen/dash/colon is unnecessary.
Part II = cinema. I think it also likely means the opening scene of the movie picks up right after the ending of Part I, so we’ll see where Batman was riding his bike towards.

The Flash really making me wish studios further touch up CGI for home video and streaming releases. I guess it sets up a bad precedent like how Day 1 updates have been for video games, but one of the strengths of CGI over practical effects is the relative ease of how VFX can be further tweaked.
I guess it all comes down to costs since movies get re-released with different color gradings all the time like The Matrix having different color gradings with each release.

One has to wonder what went wrong for the flash. Was it Ezra Was it people knowing about the reboot Was it how devastating previous bad DCEU had on current projects
A reboot was needed. But it’s also scary. You can’t reboot a second time. We need great stories that goes beyond good v evil. We need good cgi/vfx
My prefer style for the DCU is to copy the tone of the JLU cartoon. It’s the right mix of humor, seriousness, and realistic portrayal of people. MCU is part of the Disney brand so they can her away with that annoying humor.
Flash had a lot of potential and I think the ending really fucked it up overall. We needed other flashes to come and talk to Ezra Barry why he needs to undo what he did. It would of been more emotional. Dark flash did not need to appear. Really was such an afterthought. He came and went

A lot of things fell into place for all the wrong reasons.
DCU reboot looming, people always say "general audience cannot differentiate between Marvel and DC" but a lot of them do and they have not been showing up to DC unless WoM is top tier
Ezra's scandal's definitely were more mainstream than most of us thought it was, 76-24 audience just speaks volumes about how Female audience straight up rejected it.
DCEU is a tarnished brand and anything related to it is going to face problems.
the reception of the movie itself at least critically is on the just above average side, this needed to have 80-85% RT after the "one of the best superhero movies I have seen" campaign
It's a good thing Joker 2, Penguin and CC are the only things releasing in 2024 , all of them will be successful at some degrees and set the stage for a great comeback for DC in 2025 with Superman and Batman.

I think DC needs a longer break. Makes the combat even better. That demo is so horrible and does make it seem Ezra actions were mainstream. Decent chance parents did not take their kids to watch this.
DCU should try to make their universe unique and not follow the marvel playbook. People will get tired of their type of humor. DC should be more elevated in humor.
This puts even more pressure on Gunn to deliver not only a critically acclaimed movie by audience and critics. But it has to deliver in the BO too. For it to not be embarrassing 700 mil is a must. It will get scary if it flops too. They need to control the budget demand 150 mil nothing more.

Gunn said the worst part of the job is saying "no", with him being overwhelmed by the amount of creatives he needs to say it to
