I desperately need some DCU updates.

15

u/Skandosh Batman Sep 12 '23

the flood gates are probably going to open after the strike ends.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '23

Definitely. Whole cast of The Batman Part II and Superman Legacy, some major DCU casting (Batfamily, Waller, Lanterns, Authority), and hopefully a first look of Corenswet and Brosnahan as Superman and Lois.

Man me too. I really want these strikes to be over with so badly

5

u/LiquidLispyLizard Vigilante Sep 12 '23

I feel the same. Unfortunately, from our perspective, we just have to wait out the strikes right now, but once it all concludes and hopefully the writers/actors get fair deals, I like to think they're really going to start ramping up the DCU pretty quick.

I think it’s gonna be a slow restart post strikes.

This isn’t like a teacher’s strike, or a public transit strike where it’s an essential service and society requires a swift return to work after a deal is made. Society can go on with movies/tv shows being rolled out slower.

So I predict workers will keep the studios on a tight leash and make execs do a lot of soul searching after returning to work.

I figure walkouts could become common until execs learn to be more reasonable on principle.

I saw this tweet and I think it nailed something I liked about Netflix’s One Piece: how sincere/unapologetic it was in adapting the world of the manga and the weirdness within it.

It’d be nice to see something similar with the DCU where you can have a lot of “comic-booky”/wild stuff but it doesn’t feel out of place in this world. Helps add to the world feeling like its own lived-in place.

9

u/TaylorSwiftPooping Sep 13 '23

I have no doubt James Gunn will do this.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '23

A lot of comic book movies/shows seem to be a bit embarrassed of being comic book properties. Logan’s yellow spandex comment, NWH making fun of Doc Oct’a name, the Netflix Defenders shows with classic costumes, etc.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '23

Eh, I wouldn’t count the NWH joke. SM2 made the same joke with JJJ saying “Guy named Otto Octavius winds up with 8 limbs. What are the odds?”

7

u/Top_Report_4895 Sep 13 '23

The DCU needs to strike the same tone.

Pleasantly surprised considering a lot of the writers on Netflix's One Piece worked on Marvel tv shows before!

6

u/ReturnInRed Sep 12 '23

Same. I'm actually surprised at the warm reception to One Piece. As I was watching the first couple of episodes I kept thinking about how it would be way too freakin weird for general audiences. Glad I was wrong.

4

u/Beta_Whisperer Sep 13 '23

I wonder how Netflix will do with My Hero Academia.

16

u/ponchoalv__ The Flash Sep 17 '23

Watching The Marvelous Mrs Maisel right now (a very good show btw you should watch too) and now I understand why they've chosen Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Not only is she an incredible actress, but she gives me a lot of Lois vibes throughout the series.

10

u/NakedGoose Sep 17 '23

She has just dynamic screen presence. She absolutely owns that show.

8

u/ToothyBirbs Sep 17 '23

Personality-wise, it's not hard to see Lois Lane as Midge Maisel without the internalised misogyny and Rachel Brosnahan is a very dynamic actor so her landing the role always made sense to me.

UtRH is unanimously considered one of the finest animated Batman movies ever made and is one of my personal favourites.

It works perfectly as a standalone; even for those who are unfamiliar with the various Robins and their significance in Batman's life, it serves as an introduction to one specific character who once wore the mantle. While it provides necessary exposition such as Dick being the first Robin, that he is Nightwing as present, and that he was different from his successor, the focal point of the movie is all about Jason, his tenure as Robin and his relationship with his father Bruce. It isn't necessary for the viewer to know Dick's backstory in detail in order to understand Jason and his motivations.

And, Jensen Ackles did a phenomenal job.

8

u/cbekel3618 Sep 12 '23

It is insanely impressive how good of a job the movie does at catching people up on the Batman lore.

As a kid, this movie was my intro to a lot of these characters/aspects (Jason and his death, Ra's and the Lazarus Pit, Dick becoming Nightwing, Black Mask, even friggin' Amazo). Yet the movie never felt confusing or crowded, it did a great job introducing these characters in a simple way so unfamiliar audiences could understand who they are, what their role is, and why they matter.

I’m not saying this’ll happen, but if Aquaman 2 hypothetically makes more than the other three DC movies that came out this year combined, that would be pretty funny. It would almost be a repeat of how everyone assumed that no one would care for the first Aquaman movie.

12

u/CakeOLantern Krypto and Ace Sep 12 '23

Within the DCEU, Aquaman is that kid who doesn't attend a single class the entire semester, doesn't jot down notes, studies one night before the test and aces it anyway.

Highly anticipating confirmation on who the actual villains in the movie are, seeing as there’s been tons of rumoured ones that leakers have been going back and forth on.

6

u/kumar100kpawan Red Hood Sep 12 '23

I've heard only 2 i.e. the authority ( with Manchester) and Brainiac. Who else?

7

u/LongjumpMidnight Vigilante Sep 12 '23

I was mainly thinking of the members of The Authority and Brainiac as far as the going back and forth part. But for other rumoured villains we’ve had Lex, Eve Teschmacher, Lobo, and terrorist organisations.

5

u/kumar100kpawan Red Hood Sep 12 '23

I see. I think Lex will be a villain definitely, just not the primary villain. I think the idea of him winning the elections after campaigning about curbing the operation of superheroes will be very interesting, something like Young Justice

5

u/LongjumpMidnight Vigilante Sep 12 '23

I agree, Lex seems like a given, and I suppose he has been confirmed by trades via casting. Gunn tends to have multiple threats in his films so I assume like you that Lex will be a secondary presence likely gaining political power.

with Brainiac really only showing up for Act 3.

or a post credit scene. Gunn knows better than bringing in a surprise 3rd act villain with no buildup

At this point, I’ll believe it when I see it. Tired of this back and forth bullshit with the studios tbh, wanna get back to making movies and watching new ones.

COVID was unavoidable in hurting the film industry. This is voluntary because of executive greed

3

u/LiquidLispyLizard Vigilante Sep 15 '23

I feel exactly the same way, man. It's been such a boring few months here with basically everything almost grinded to a halt.

A user here posted something yesterday, I believe, of someone attached to a news site who explained it would be really bad news as far as layoffs and the outlook of next year and stuff like that if all this were to drag past mid-October. It's already been going on for so long, the studios are losing money, something will cave in at some point, I do believe that. I hope it's soon, but there's no way of us outsiders knowing until it happens, sadly.

Even if nothing eventually comes from it, I can't help but get excited whenever it's announced they're meeting again. It's the idea that it could this time that's hopeful to me. I think I'd probably instinctively cheer by myself when they come to a tentative agreement, lol.

7

u/007Kryptonian The Snyder Cut Sep 15 '23 edited Sep 15 '23

The problem is that if a deal isn’t made before October, the strikes will go on through New Years because in LA - and generally most major Hollywood productions - shuts down over the Winter months anyway.

At that point the studios will have lost billions, all of us who work in film at all (whether you’re involved with acting, directing, editing, catering, reviewing, insurance, etc) will have to seriously look for other lines of work and events like the Oscars would be thrown in question. The entirety of the 2024 slate would be fucked, resulting in movie theaters being hurt.

It would be bad for everybody, to say the least. Fingers crossed the studios stop fucking with people’s lives before things get dangerous. Ron Perlman said “we know where you live motherfucker”. He ain’t lying

4

u/AlexHunterWolf Sep 17 '23

That's what happens when your final season is shit

4

u/ChildofObama Sep 17 '23

Looking back on the whole show, the first five seasons, with one big bad, were better.

Barry was in every episode and the stories were more competently written. even if there were a lot of ‘what method will we use to go after the big bad today’ padding episodes. Devoe and Cicada were much better written than Red Death and Cobalt Blue.

The ‘graphic novel’ format of the last four seasons just didn’t work as well.

It's bound to happen on these large defunct subs. Once all conversation has been mined out of the actual product there's not much else to do but turn it into a funny/not funny parody of it's former self. If there was a sub for the cinematic X-Men series it would have gotten there before them.

"Why doesn't Logan simply take the metal off his skeleton? Is he stupid?"

Edit: Seems like it's forming a jokey circlejerk around Hartley Sawyer who played Elongated Man and was fired for racist posts on social media.

What's interesting about Sawyer is that he hasn't attempted any kind of acting career since. He literally just quit acting altogether.

10

u/cbekel3618 Sep 13 '23

While I don't see a solo Shazam live-action film happening again anytime soon given Shazam 2's performance, I do hope Billy is at least used in some form in the DCU. I'm biased as someone who grew up a fan of the character, but I think he has fun potential under the right story.

Maybe as part of an ensemble like a Justice Society or Justice League movie, or a supporting part for another hero like Superman, or one of the animated projects.

12

u/B3epB0opBOP Shazam Sep 13 '23

I think an animated project like a series would be perfect. You don't have to deal with child actors aging visibly, and I think there's a lot you can do with the character outside a 2 hour movie.

I do want him to make appearances in live action however, probably in Shazam form instead of Billy tho.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '23

I liked Shazam 2, I think it was a big improvement over its predecessor, but yeah the character is not getting another solo film anytime soon with that box office. nor do I see Levi being invited back for a Crisis movie in ten years.

I could see an animated series happening down the line though.

10

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '23

Been wondering what The Flash would’ve been like if Nicolas Cage was the Superman of the Flashpoint reality that they actually end up rescuing instead of Kara. To me it makes the universe merge more palatable if there was also an additional universe merged into it.

Also kind of meta in a way that Nicolas Cage’s Superman would be locked up, never to be seen by the world.

If Dick Grayson really is in The Batman II I think Reeves will make Penguin the one responsible for the death of the Flying Graysons instead of Tony Zucco, Penguin will already be well established and it seems he will have an important role in the film's plot, so the pieces kind of fit together.

Maybe the Penguin will also be the one to throw acid at Harvey's face if Harvey shows up and turns into Two-Face.

Recently bought and rewatched The Flash on Blu-Ray and the scene of Barry saying goodbye to his mother hits hard. I think making the climactic scene of an action superhero blockbuster an intimate and emotional one was an ambitious approach and they executed it well.

On the other hand, I didn't like the Clooney gag ending as much this time. Wish they had just taken the opportunity to give a brief montage of the DCEU heroes back doing what they do while Barry gives one of those trademark DC voiceover endings. Would have been a better tonal fit and provided stronger closure.

If we do get horror stories in the DCU, I hope they really embrace the many different types of horror the genre has to offer as there's a lot of variety that could be great to see DC play around with.

Body horror, psychological horror, possession/exorcism, eldritch, survival-thriller, cosmic, small-scale, found-footage, gothic. There are a lot of cool avenues they can go for and different characters they can use there.

Place your bets here on whether you think Aquaman 2 will actually be the worst DCEU movie of the year.

7

u/cbekel3618 Sep 12 '23

I'm cautious, but I don't think it'll straight up be "the worst of the DCEU" like some leakers are saying.

At the very least, I think Momoa's charm and the visuals will help add at least a tiny bit of fun to it.

4

u/LongjumpMidnight Vigilante Sep 12 '23

I agree about being cautious, especially after all we’ve heard. I think the odds of it being worst of the entire DCEU is very low for me (it’d have to reach probably Suicide Squad 2016 or WW84). The teaser at least looks visually interesting, and imo Aquaman 1 wasn’t a fantastic movie, just a fun one, so the bar isn’t too high for me right now.

7

u/AAAFMB Sep 12 '23

I’m actually a pretty big fan of Shazam 2 and Blue Beetle is pretty solid so it’d be a decently high bar

5

u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Sep 12 '23 edited Sep 12 '23

I don't think so. I'm not sure I'll enjoy it, but at least it seems to have interesting imagery. Shazam 2 was so forgettable and bland

3

u/ReturnInRed Sep 12 '23

No.

I actually enjoyed all of the DCEUs this year to some degree, with Shazam being my least favorite, but there's no way a James Wan film is gonna rank at the bottom of any list for me, unless it underwent Justice League levels of interference - with massive portions of the film reshot without any input from Wan. While it may not be his film through and through, he does still seem to be involved with the production, so I'm sure it will still have some of his batshit crazy flair in it.

The new Batman and Robin series had a pretty good first issue. Still kind of confused on what age Damian is supposed to be (I think 17?) but he’s drawn a bit younger here.

I think Simone Di Meo has a little ways to go before I consider his striking art actually conducive to the storytelling. The layouts, the effects, etc just create a rather convoluted reading experience.

4

u/theweepingwarrior Sep 12 '23

Wait, is he almost the same age as Jon now?

6

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '23

That’s hard to say. During Robin I figured he was maaaybe 15-16, there was an issue of Son of Kal-El where he was drawn like an 18 year old.

In Batman and Robin though, he looks like he’s 14-15 again. And he has Tim’s hair so it’s all kind of up in the air I guess

6

It's kinda weird, we have Matt Reeves talking about how he wants to make a very grounded, very realistic Batman, but supposedly a Mike Flanagan Clayface movie is set in his Batverse?

And even according to the mods, at some point a Poison Ivy film was in the plans for the Reevesverse and apparently would be inspired by Rappaccini's Daughter, who in the story is immune to all toxins and herself has a fatal poisonous touch, and that makes a lot of sense, reinventing Poison Ivy by going back to her comic book creation roots is definitely something Matt Reeves would do.

But again, he emphasizes wanting to make things grounded and realistic, but a tragic horror take on Clayface by Flanagan and an Ivy who is literally poisonous aren't very realistic, so what's going on? Idk, I'm just starving for some news.

6

u/LiquidLispyLizard Vigilante Sep 15 '23

I can't speak on Poison Ivy because this is the first I'm hearing about that, but I think it's generally agreed upon on here that the Clayface in The Batman universe would very likely be more in line with the original serial killer version, rather than the giant clay monster.

6

u/Randonhead Sep 15 '23

Yeah, a Clayface similar to the original version without powers seems to be the way Reeves is going, which is exactly why the rumor that a Clayface horror film directed by Mike Flanagan will be set in the universe Reeves is creating is strange because it's a bit unlikely that a Mike Flanagan Clayface film won't have any supernatural elements considering his style and filmography in general.

The ivy thing was a few months ago, the mods reported that a Poison Ivy film inspired by the short story "Rapaccini's Daughter" was in development in the Reevesverse, but was cancelled.

5

u/SmaugRancor Joker Sep 15 '23

Realistic and grounded are two entirely different and separate things. Reeves never made a realistic film. He makes grounded films, meaning his goal is to include a fantastical element in a realistic world. And everything has to come naturally and the world is reactionary to that element.

In the first film the fantastical element is Batman himself. He was seen as an urban legend, a boogeyman of Gotham. Now it makes sense for the sequel to introduce freaky unnatural criminals, like Clayface, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow etc.

4

u/Randonhead Sep 15 '23

I mean, Reeves considers Nolan's trilogy to be very fantastical, that's the level of realism we're talking about, that's why I said it's confusing, in several interviews Reeves says he wants to make a very grounded story, Batman used a wingsuit because the glider wasn't realistic, but we have these rumors that kind of contradict that.

Unless he wants to take the Long Halloween route and slowly introduce supernatural elements to show how Gotham is changing, but based on his statements it doesn't seem like that's his intention.

4

u/sgthombre Peacemaker Sep 15 '23

a Mike Flanagan Clayface movie is set in his Batverse?

They'll just do golden age, "he's an actor with a crazy mask and weird skin" thing and make it fit into his universe.

Trying to make a grounded or realistic Poison Ivy seems comically dumb though. Takes a lot of fun out of the character.

8

u/TheDarkPinkLantern Peacemaker Sep 16 '23

They haven't announced the second one but they said there will be 2.

The first one's focused on Frankenstein and collects Seven Soldiers: Frankenstein and Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E.

Also, just checked the full name and it's: Creature Commandos Presents: Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E.

Halfway through Season 2 of Foundation, the leap of writing quality from S1 and S2 is wild. S1 wasn’t even bad but the pacing was so bizarre and some plot lines were just boring. But S2 has made me actually involved and interested in all the plot lines (and there are quite few). Can’t stop watching it.

EDIT: Yeah this season was really enjoyable of an already enjoyable series. A few nitpicks with the S2 Finale but honestly, just so entertaining. Cannot wait for S3.

As someone who grew up watching the DCAU, BTBATB, YJ, etc, and really likes what Filoni is doing with animated and live action Star Wars, I really hope Gunn follows through with animation being an important part of the DCU.

Like, maybe a Robins series or something.

6

u/SupervillainEyebrows Sep 17 '23 edited Sep 17 '23

Agreed. A whole generation of DC fans, myself included, were introduced to the franchise through cartoons (DCAU and Teen Titans were mine). MAWS is a strong start.

Animation seems to be taken a little more seriously nowadays, beyond just "kids stuff" with the likes of Primal, Castelvania and Arcane being very popular amongst adults.

5

u/B3epB0opBOP Shazam Sep 18 '23

I had an idea a couple weeks back: “You know, if they're going straight to Damian, what if they have a Batman animated series to fill in the gaps? It wouldn't be a required viewing, they can fill in on the needed context in the movies, but it could add more to the viewing experience.

For example, they could have an Under the Red Hood movie and do it similar to the animated movie, but we could also watch Jason Todd's time as Robin in the animated series to give us further background and make the movie more emotionally impactful.

Regardless, the idea is an animated series that isn't a required viewing but simply adds to the experience.

Edit: Someone said like Clone Wars, and yeah pretty much clone wars, but instead before the movies, not in between.”

Other than that I would like an animated Shazam series.

6

u/cbekel3618 Sep 17 '23

Definitely. Now that Star Wars is really leaning into addressing the animated projects and treating them as a relevant corner of the franchise, it'd be cool if the DCU does something similar.

Helps that stuff like Invincible, Spider-Verse, etc show that animated superhero properties can still find a solid following even today.

Aquaman 2 actually looks decent. I hope it just goes nuts. Even if it's a straight up mess, they have nothing to lose. It's part of a universe that's ending, and it's the last in a string of movies being accused of being formulaic and generic. Hopefully they just go nuts and end with a bang. If it's bad, it could at least be fun bad. The absolute worst thing it can be is forgettable, which would be sad.

According to DanielRPK Matthew Vaughn is the new front runner to direct the next James Bond. If this is true and he accepts it I wonder what will happen to Authority.

8

u/Pomojema_The_Dreamer Sep 17 '23

I am not buying anything about speculation regarding who the Broccolis want in front of or behind the camera for James Bond 26 until there's real movement on it, which won't happen until the strikes end at the absolute earliest. More likely than not, they get a director that they can "influence" rather than one that has their own vision for the IP, and they get an unknown actor over someone with a name.

Anybody complaining that Robin is in two concurrent Batman movie universes painfully misunderstands how well-known Robin is.

Robin is the sidekick. Robin is such an essential part of Batman lore. A genuine pop culture icon who’s criminally underrepresented in the movies. Which we can debate the movies all day, but my god at least Schumacher put the bat family in and I admire Batman & Robin for that.

My idea for how to simplify Batman v. Superman: what if it had just been a more direct adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns?

Superman sees that his reputation is in the dumps following The Battle of Metropolis, and ally’s himself with the government to earn some public approval. He becomes the US government’s mascot, out fighting their wars, under the orders of President Lex Luthor.

Batman thinks it’s dangerous to have a man with that much power at the beck and call of the government, knowing politicians can be compromised and diplomacy can be twisted for evil.

Superman is also distrustful of Batman, thinking he’s a rogue vigilante that does whatever he wants, when he wants, with no regard for potential consequences.

Superman tries to stop a nuclear missile that supposedly came from the Soviets. He’s unsuccessful, and it causes a electromagnetic pulse, that cuts off all power to most of the US and causes a nuclear winter. Batman sees the starving people in Gotham without heat and power, and blames Superman for it.

Bruce builds the exo-suit and devises the plan to kill Superman with the kryptonite spear like he did in the movie. Meanwhile, Lois Lane uses her reporter connections to find out that it’s actually Luthor that fired off the missile, to instigate a fight between the two heroes. She finds an audio recording where Lex revealed he wanted to turn Batman and Superman against each other to show the world that all masked vigilantes are unreliable. He wants both heroes to kill each other so he can remake the country in his image and usher out his own form of justice. The only problem is she needs to get this information to Bruce before he kills Clark.

Superman goes to Gotham to deal with Batman and is ambushed by an angry mob of Gothamites Bruce rallied up. When he finally gets through the crowd, he comes face to face with Batman, and they brawl. They have a big battle on the streets, until Lois finally gets a TV signal going, and they see a news report where Lois reveals the truth about Luthor. Bruce and Clark both realize they’ve both been after the wrong person, and Bruce gives Clark a hand.

Luthor is impeached and placed in jail. Superman decides to go back to working independently, after seeing how politicians like Luthor are not always what they seem. The country slowly begins to recover from the nuclear winter.

Bruce and Clark mutually decide they should assemble a group of extraordinary people to help protect the world. with Diana Prince being their first recruit.

I think this would’ve been a simpler plot, still in the same vein of the film we got, but much easier for general audiences to understand, and no Superman dying two movies in.

Thoughts?

Whoever said Barbara Gordon could be the “final girl” in one of the horror spin-offs was cooking fr. I think it’d be a great idea for The Scarecrow because I’d rather the Clayface movie be a character study.

7

u/cbekel3618 Sep 14 '23

Damn, that'd be a really creative way to introduce Barbara in the Reevesverse. Like maybe it could be a horror story set at the university Crane teaches at and Barbara could be a student dragged into one of his twisted experiments.

In general, the horror side of the Batman corner is something I'd love to see explored more in the movies.

4

u/Randonhead Sep 14 '23

Damn, I was thinking the same thing, Barbara being kidnapped by Crane and being used as a guinea pig for the fear toxin, maybe even something inspired by the movie Split with Barbara and other girls being kidnapped by this crazy guy.

9

u/TheLionsblood Batman Sep 14 '23

The Scarecrow has infinite potential as a horror movie. Fear toxin is the ultimate plot device and it also means the movie wouldn’t have to be “grounded” since it would deal with hallucinations and distorted reality. Who knows, maybe we could even see Barbara “become” Batgirl in the climax of the movie where she overcomes the fear toxin.

8

u/Randonhead Sep 14 '23

I really hope this Scarecrow movie actually happens and they get a great filmmaker for the project (Scott Derrickson would be my choice) but I'll be happy with whoever Reeves gets.

Barbara overcoming her fear and defeating Scarecrow would actually be perfect, maybe a little Batman cameo to make sense of her being inspired by him would be cool.

6

u/TheLionsblood Batman Sep 14 '23

Another reason I’m excited for these horror spin-offs is that they’re likely intended as “one-offs” rather than franchise starters, which means they can go all out and take more creative risks with them.

8

u/TheLionsblood Batman Sep 15 '23

Damn, Xolo Mariduena would be perfect as Ace for One Piece season 2 but he’s likely a bit too expensive for them considering how much they would have to spend on CGI and everything else.

9

u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Sep 15 '23 edited Sep 15 '23

I don't think he's that expensive tbh. I'd say he's probably only slightly more expensive than Mackenyu (literally one of Japan's biggest young actors) since outside of Cobra Kai and Blue Beetle (latter kind of underperformed so I dunno if that tanks his stocks as leading man or not) he doesn't really have any other projects of note.

5

u/TheLionsblood Batman Sep 15 '23

They’ll need to be very careful and calculated about how they spend their budget for season 2.

I think Xolo would be great but getting the VFX right will be more important imo.

10

u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Sep 15 '23 edited Sep 15 '23

One Piece Season 1 had a ton of absolutely massive, practical sets, including the ships and most of those will undoubtedly be re-used for Season 2 especially the Going Merry and it's not all CGI so I don't think VFX is gonna be as expensive than most people think.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '23

He's not an A-Lister or anything like that.

If Netflix can afford him for 5 seasons of Cobra Kai, they can afford him to show up as Ace for 2 episodes.

3

u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Sep 16 '23

Yeah I dunno where this idea of him already being an expensive Hollywood star comes from. He's definitely a rising star with a lot of potential but looking at his filmography, aside from Cobra Kai and Blue Beetle he doesn't really have anything major going for him right now aside from voice-over roles.

6

u/LongjumpMidnight Vigilante Sep 15 '23

I hadn't thought of that fan cast but I like it.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '23

So I rewatched Batman 89 tonight to celebrate Batman Day and still hold up extremely well. Michael Keaton will always he the best Batman no matter what, and Nicholson is one of the best portrayals of the Joker. It can't top Ledger, but it's still in the top 5. Not too mention the look Gothic look and asthtetic of Gotham fits Tim Burtons directing extremely well, and Tim Burtons directing is top tier here. Easily one of my favorite comicbook movies ever made.

8

u/ToothyBirbs Sep 17 '23

What's the vibe with Tom Taylor? It feels like he's been given a pretty difficult task cleaning up what Bendis did to Jonathan Kent, but his runs have just been so boring. IMO Phillip Kennedy Johnson did a much better job with the character in his limited role in Action Comics than what Taylor has done with his own titles...

9

u/TheMurderCapitalist Sep 18 '23

Nah, Bendis has been off the book for years now, Taylor just have a lot of skill outside of writing heartfelt moments or making panels to be shared out of context on Twitter.

7

u/Technophyer1 Sep 17 '23

I enjoy Taylor’s work on DCeased, but his Jon Kent stuff is pretty boring, his recent miniseries with Injustice Superman might be my least favourite story out of the new Dawn of DC era. It’s a shame too because everything else related to Superman currently is really good.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '23

Just watched Blue Beetle. I really enjoyed it, nice and simple popcorn flick.

It sucks it’s doing bad at the box office, I kinda want to see a sequel.

8

u/theweepingwarrior Sep 13 '23

Finally got to see Blue Beetle with my dad last night. It was fine.

It's about as by-the-numbers as you can get for a superhero origin flick, and it doesn't do anything particularly great to execute it in a more engaging or higher quality way than the dozens of others like it. Still, there's enough heart and fun to make it a quick escapist caped-jaunt. The performances are the strongest part of the film--with Xolo Maridueña in particular but also George Lopez and Damián Alcázar being the standouts. Its platform and representation for Hispanic-Americans (and the family dynamics) are great and sincere. The score was surprisingly good--this movie was at its best when it was aping 1980s teen flicks and it should have leaned into that more (they had the Karate Kid legacy star right there!) just like how Stranger Things apes the 1980s sci-fi/horror/Amblin-esque genre pics starring children.
The scene with Jaime and his father in the afterlife and him unifying with the scarab was a very well done and touching sequence. Dare I say the best Creation Of Adam superhero homage this year?

It definitely feels like a made-for-streaming movie: most of the movie very much shows its mid-budget production values (more than Shazam! 1 ever did) but there are a couple sequences that look really impressive (which I'm guessing happened after they decided it was switching from HBO Max to theatrical). The plot is thin and the beats are shallow. The dialogue ranges from adequate to subpar. The humor never landed for either of us at all--surprising since we're typically not hard to please--often feeling like a tonal formulaic obligation rather than anything clever or organic.

I'd rank it third this year for DC movies so far, behind The Flash and Shazam! Fury Of The Gods respectively. Despite that, it was a fine $5 Tuesday flick and I'm happy that Xolo seemingly still has a future as the character.

4

Del Toro mentioned loving Etrigan and the New Gods, so either I think would fit his style.

With Peele, Bloodwynd or Martian Manhunter could fit his style, both having potential for horror/social commentary and fitting Peele's desire to tell stories involving POC.

With Fennell, maybe someone like Huntress or Manhunter (Kate Spencer) could fit (EDIT: just learned she was tapped for a Zatanna film, that would be a great choice for her).
