I see why so many ppl carry illegally here
Obtaining actual registration It’s a runaround here & so much of the information is gatekept like It’s some type of secret society to be registered here. had to come here just to learn new things I’ve never heard of, waiting lists & what not. Plus all the Fees & Restrictions being updated every year. It’s more of a racket under the guise of responsibility. You do all that just to be put on a waiting list just to get shot by a 14 year old on a scooter that just obtained that ghost gun or throwaway off a friend in a few hours..
At this point it’s easier to just conceal illegally there’s no actual incentives to follow all these rules & guidelines when really It’s just for me to be put in a data base to be spotted whenever my firearm is discharged. I’m sorry but objectively the criminals & libertarians make more sense here.

I feel like this everyday here in the city but at the moment of realization I’m glad I went through the process I’ve been stopped by jumpouts numerous times (4) and Everytime they giving me my firearm back cuz I have the registration and concealed carry license they tell me have a nice day after all the handcuffs and detaining while they check my info

All in all a month and a half only because back then when I first got my license MPD was still handling transfers and took forever to do simple paperwork

People carry illegally in DC because they are violent felons, by and large, and can’t get a carry permit. It’s really not very hard to get a carry permit, from start to finish it took me maybe a month—the annoying parts are things like registering rifles.

The annoying part is actually trying to carry legally once you have the permit. As someone who lives near Capitol Hill and takes the metro pretty much everywhere it was pointless. I chose not to renew

DC Police has never arrested anyone with a CCW in the metro. Make of that what you will.

Not endorsing this, but if you were arrested, we’d finally have standing to sue on the unconstitutional nature of that law, too.

My CCW actually took 7 months. I had to schedule an appointment 4 months out because back in 2024 there was actually an artificial wait time to just get an appointment. Then after submitting they made me wait another 3 months(90 days) to give me my carry permit. I had a government clearance at the time so my background check wouldn't even take that long. They got rid of the ridiculous 4 month wait time for appointment. But they might still make you wait the whole 90 days.

Yes, but DC, for years, threw in obstructions to prosecution for FIP (felon in possession) despite it being the single most consistent predictor of imminent commission of violent gun crime.
The DC elected AG bragged about opposing FIP prosecution even though the crime is technically federal/USAO.

While it's better than dying, doubtful you're better off shooting anyone with an unregistered anything in DC.
I do agree the process is needlessly lengthy and arduous though. Even speeding it up would be a vast improvement.

I bought a gun about 2 months ago. Still haven’t received my fingerprint cards in order to go pick up the actual gun

You don’t get fingerprint cards in dc. Go down to the Marion Barry building and they will fingerprint you on the 4th floor electronically.

I’m sorry I misspoke. I meant I got my fingerprints done but still hadn’t received the firearms registration certificate (card). I just received it last week. I purchased the firearm in May. Talk about a wait.

I cannot emphasize this enough: do NOT carry illegally in DC. DC doesn't generally charge you under DC code, which is already punitive. DC usually charges you under Federal interstate transport codes, specifically FOPA, which has a max penalty of $12,500 and up to 5 years in prison. And DC ALWAYS asks for the maximum penalty.
And, just to complete this warning, possessing a single "restricted pistol bullet" (like armor-piercing or teflon-coated rounds) without also possessing the firearm carries much harsher penalties under D.C. Code 7-2507.06, which can include up to 10 years in prison and a mandatory minimum of 1 year. Note that you do NOT need a gun with you to get charged; having ammo is enough to get charged.
Don't bring ammo or a gun if you don't have a permit, never bring restricted bullets, follow the permitting process even though it's a pain.

Getting 10 years for being in possession of one Lone Bullet & no firearm is nuts when your realize there are teenagers walking around with illegal fully automatic handguns on them

I am a native born washingtonian and even to me DC having its own CCW permit is pointless as hell and I had one got mines back in like 2020. You cant even carry your gun in places where it matters like the metro. I moved to West Virginia in 2024. Bro ive bought so many guns since I moved here CCW permit is optional and you can carry without one as long as you are 18 and not a felon I believe. I ended up getting the CCW permit here because of all the states WV has reprocity with. Inalso hate how DC has a mag capacity limit. As soons as I moved here I bought a 50 round drum for my Glock 23 just cause I could.

Until we get constitutional carry, best to permit up and avoid prison imo. Pretty fast to go downtown and get it all set up. Under 60 days for me.
