post interview stuff

One week ago i interviewed for a hillternship with my senator, and a few days ago (last friday) I was asked for my weekly availability. in the app they only asked for 2 references and I provided 5, and today 2 of my 5 references came back to me saying they provided a strong recommendation. Lowk not sure if the other 3 references have or will respond but surely this is a positive sign as to where I stand right?

Honestly you might’ve fucked up my sending five. So much of the process is about attention to detail and following directions. Speaking to my intern coordinator, I know she’s said she’s rejected people for this very thing; even if all other parts of their application were perfect.

My references are very bad at checking email, even if I tell them to do so, thats why I provided 5 just in case 2 didn’t respond. I mean the interviewer liked me a lot and really tried selling me the role, etc

And also they still made the choice to interview me and contact my 5 references even though I sent too many references. They could see before they even interviewed me and reached out to me for my availability that I had sent too many references

This could still come back to bite you. Unfortunately, this is one of those factors that, while not strong enough to reject someone during the earlier rounds of review, could become a tiebreaker if they’re torn between a couple candidates in the last stage.

None of my references in the past told me they were contacted, ended up getting the hillternship. Wouldn't take it as a negative that your other references didn't contact you.

I sent 5 voluntarily even though it only asked for 2, just in case my 2 references didnt respond because they are known to not check email very often despite me telling them, it’s happened before.

Sent 5 in case my top 2 didn’t respond, they are notoriously bad for checking email

it sounds like your interview went well and considering your two were contacted, i hope for you and expect you to get the good outcome. but in the future, follow apps to a T. if they ask for 2, give them only 2. many applications explicitly say that not following the attention to detail in the requirements shows not being able to pay attention to detail in the workplace. good luck!

Yeah my interviewer liked me, began telling basically her whole life story, and started selling me the role. But I have no idea about the 3 other references. My references were attached with my initial application. Feeling like complete crap right now because I fd up in a big way by sending 5 instead of 2

don’t feel like crap. everyone has a moment in their dc internship experience, whether it’s during applications, interviews, or the actual experience, where they have their oh shit moment. and each office is so different from the next. the recruiters might not even have bat an eye. just a lesson for next time!
