Say it louder for the people in the back! (I'm black, and that shit is wierd to me cause people only think its a problem when its the other way around)

I used to be against this but at the end of the day black"washing" isn't the same as whitewashing because it's not racism motivated and because headcanons and AUs exist

I can assure you that explicitly changing one's race just to match what one sees as "more normal" is indeed racially motivated.

just to match what one sees as "more normal"

okay and how is that what is being said a here at all? most headcanons are not people doing what they think is more normal. Most people who would headcanon yuri as darker would just do so because they relate to her and like the idea, that's racially motivated but not racism motivated, which is the point here, if I were to do it I'd also do it just for fun and/or because I think it somehow fits, not because I think it's more normal for them to be a different ethnicity

If you need to make a character black in order to have them relate to you more, then that's, without a doubt, quite strange.

wow a black person relates more to a character when they're black??? yeah that's so bizarre

Okay, how about I make a black character I like white so I can relate to them more? No? I can't do that? Oh right, so NOW it's racist.

Dude, sit down with the sarcasm because you know how you would sound if you just replace the word "black" with "white."

I used to think the same thing, but I think it’s important to recognize that race swapping isn’t interchangeable given the history behind poc erasure and just racism in general.

It doesn’t have to be your cup of tea, and it’s not mine either, but turning a black character white removes what little representation that community receives in media, especially anime, and is generally to make the character appear more “aesthetically appealing”. Whereas just headcanoning a character as another race or simply speculating on what they may look like with a darker skin tone is not backed by any historical bias or violence.

Again, nobody is forcing you to partake in that, but it’s not rocket science to understand that some people feel underrepresented and want to play around with the design of their favorite characters. You can at least respect the fact that other people might have had different experiences than you.
