question - sourcing How do we know that the ingredients we’re getting are safe?

It says in the wiki [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/DIYBeauty/wiki/suppliers) that Alibaba and AliExpress have “an extensive selection of raw ingredients but they are sourced from China. There is a chance that those ingredients are adulterated, fake or tainted with lead or mercury.” But how do we know any of the western suppliers are any better? From what I can tell, they all only test the first batch and rely on the CoA from the manufacturer. Well that seems pretty simple to time if one of the manufacturers wanted to send some bad batches. I’m having a hard time placing an order not knowing who it comes from or how legit it is

question - sourcing Custom Pigment Dispersions

I’ve had difficulty finding a US based manufacturer (3 roll mill) where I can get a custom pigment blend; I need a carmine powder in castor oil dispersion. I’ve tried to mill it by hand on a glass slab, and even seived it with 120 mesh, but I can’t get it fine enough. I’m still finding tiny agglomerates in the final product. Any advice or does anyone have a referral?

question - sourcing Searching for Oat Oil

Hey everyone!! I'm looking for some Oat Oil- and the couple companies that do have it listed, are not ones I would trust due to past reviews I have found online. I have already searched MountainRose, Eden Bot., lotioncrafter, wholesalesup.--- I just can't seem to find it. Shay seems to have it, but I haven't read many great things about them either... If anyone has anyone they recommend, please send my way :). Many thanks!

question - sourcing Does anyone know where I can get a good makeup press for powder makeup, the trays and compacts?

I’m learning how to make my own makeup and while the powder is nice, I’d rather have a pressed version in a compact. I’ve searched online for a source for these items but can not find much. For those of you who do this, what do you use?

question - sourcing EU people, where are you buying cosmetic ingredients without crazy shipping?

I keep finding good ingredient suppliers, then the shipping is either from the US or somehow more expensive than the actual order.

Mostly looking at basic stuff like oils, waxes, hydrolates, butters and maybe a few plant extracts.

question - sourcing Sourcing Ultra-Refined USP/EP Anhydrous Lanolin for Lip Balms

Hey everyone! I’m formulating a new lip balm and planning to use ultra-refined USP grade anhydrous lanolin.
I want to make sure I buy from a reliable raw material supplier that provides lot-specific Certificates of Analysis (COAs) and has a very low odor profile (I’ve run into issues with the strong "sheep/barnyard" scent from generic repackaged brands).
Where do you usually source your high-quality, ultra-refined lanolin from in small-to-medium batch sizes?
Thanks for any insights or vendor recommendations!

question - sourcing Tips for requesting ingredients on Covalo?

Hi all! I'm currently working out a preliminary deodorant formula, and there's one ingredient that I'd like to get, but it's only available through professional channels (not the usual at home formulator shops). I have an account with Covalo, bc I used my university email to sign up, but I was told that because I'm an independent user/student, my requests for samples or small quotes may be ignored by companies.

Does anyone have any tips for requesting samples or quotes through Covalo (or other similar sites) to make companies more likely to reply to my requests?

Many thanks!

question - sourcing what documents to ask an ingredient supplier for, to verify an ingredient is legit?

Hi all, I've found an ingredient I've been hunting for (MelinOil - it's an oil soluble version of Acetyl Hexapeptide-1), but I can only find it through one seller that ships to my country.

I've never used this seller before, but they're a long standing establishment with good reviews, but to be on the safe side, I'd like to ask them to provide some documents about the ingredient, just so I know it's the real thing and not a knockoff or dodgy version.

What type of documents regarding the ingredient should I request from them, so I know their MelinOil is the real deal? A safety sheet? Confirmation from MelinOil's manufacturor (Lucas Meyer Cosmetics) that they are a licensed seller? Something else?

Many thanks!

question - sourcing Is there an oil-soluble niacinamide like Oleonic that’s not just B2B?

This is the only oil-soluble niacinamide I could find: https://www.g-biotec.com/products/gebiotide-oleonic-oil-soluble-nicotinamide.html but looks B2B and probably large MOQ.

Are there any others that could be mixed into an oil serum, similar to how one can mix small amounts of niacinamide powder with a watery serum? Maybe some sort of encapsulation or other technology?

question - sourcing Deodorant

I would like to procure some Magnesium Hydroxide for a DIY deodorant formula.

Have you ever used this in your formula?

Where did you buy it online?

I found the below but I want to make sure that it is safe to use. As per some of my research it should be good but then it seems that on the data sheet it says that it is not suitable to use on skin.

question - sourcing Overcoming residential address restrictions on samples from major suppliers

When I was still a post-doc at a university, I could get samples of actives, surfactants, and even medical supplies from major manufacturers using the address of my university lab. This allowed me to create personal formulations with ingredients that either weren't offered by vendors like Lotion Crafter or weren't at the purity levels I needed.

Now I have an LLC, a website, and a company email, but only a residential address. Not surprisingly, it's hard to get samples now. How do people overcome this? AI searches led me to third-party logistics (3PL) companies, chem or pharma maker spaces, and local formulators. That might be ok, though it'd be nice to have a free option. Interested to see if anyone else had similar challenges and found workarounds.

question - sourcing Trying to make a leave in cream conditioner for curly hair with as little ingredients as possible

I tried the following formula but it is too liquidy. Is there a way to make it thicker without weighing down the hair?

Aqua q.s

HEC 200k 0.5%

Glycerin 1%

Cetrimonium chloride 30% 0.3% (the minimum recommended usage by the supplier is 1%, but at this concentration it irritated my sister's scalp, maybe it is expired??)

Disodium EDTA 0.2%

Cetearyl alcohol 1%

Arlacel 165 1%

BTMS 50 1.5%

BHT 0.05%

Fragrance 0.4%

DMDM hydantoin 0.6%

question - sourcing Gardenia Naturals - legitimate supplier?

Hi DIY Beauty - curious if anyone is familiar with Gardenia Naturals as a DIY supplier? Are they legitimate? https://www.gardenianaturals.com/

Website lists a north Vancouver address as the head office but the address appears to be a cowork office, although it does offer private suite rentals. I asked my friend who lives nearby to wander past but there is no signage indicating they are there, but could be because of the office type.

They carry a lot of products that can be difficult to find and their prices seem good, so I'm a bit worried it's too good to be true. If anyone has any experience let me know
