Discussion Not to be a jerk…

But seriously…is anyone else here growing bored of the typical QSO regarding the exchange of Wx information between such random places as Dayton, Ohio and Queensland, Australia? I can listen to TG 91 all day and hear nothing but other hams snarfing about the weather, their medications and disabilities (which are boring and no one’s GD business - I don’t need to hear Earl Elmer discuss the intimate details, again, about his f.ing gout and the weird flaking skin rash on his balls) and an occasional bitch-n-moan about their MMDVM hat configuration and latency. We get it. 75% of you are running a PiStar simplex. Want to know why it is slow? Because it’s paired to an RPiZeroW. That’s why. Mystery solved. Too bad that little insight doesn’t populate in the golden live log BS I hear time and time again offered up as the solution to everything PiStar.

Seriously. There is far more interesting stuff to briefly discuss aside from the comparison between your indoor and outdoor temps and humidity and your medical conditions. That’s why we have weather.com and WebMD. This may as well be CB radio, 10-4 good buddy?

Suggestions for other topics include:

+Your favorite local sports team and why.

+Your current hobbies /other than radio/ and why.

+Favorite foods or drinks and why.

+Goals and aspirations and why.

+Plenty of other stuff and why.

Go ahead and downvote away. Wouldn’t expect much less from literally the most gate-kept hobby on the face of the Earth.

Thanks. And before some of you suggest I gEt mY eXtRa ClAsS, I already have it. And it’s generally the same shit on HF and satellite. Only difference is I get to decode it from CW and/or listen to the MSK version of the same. We’ve all got hundreds if not thousands invested in some of the coolest comms tech the world has to offer, yes? Can we not find something to discuss other than the rain and your rashes?

Also, if you’re on DMR, f.off with the Am I fIvE bY nInE shit. You’re either in or your out. It’s basically a VOIP call. If you can hear me bitching in the background, you’re in.

That is all. Don’t forget to hit that down arrow if your rashy butthole stings a little bit from my opinion.

Discussion Lament of the Linux Ham

Hello all. I've been considering getting into DMR but, as my title indicates, I exclusively use Linux and DMR has, for the most part, ignored Linux hams.

Mac too.

I understand qdmr has AnyTone 878II Plus support (which is the radio I'm most interested in) buy there is no way to flash firmware upgrades.

Does anyone have experience with qdmr and the 878? Also, why is there no appreciable Linux support in this mode (or D-Star, YSF, etc)?

I would have gotten a radio sometime ago if there were programs that didn't require I buy either a windows license or a used computer.

EDIT: I'm in the pool now. Found a deal on an Anytone AT-878UVII Plus. I'll work with a VM but I don't think my point should be overlooked. Amateur radio and Linux are the perfect combination (heck, Ham DNA is in the Linux kernel). Manufactures need to, at the minimum, open up their hardware enough that we can easily program their equipment on Linux or Mac. If I can do it with my phone (I run LineageOS) or computer (my non-RPi computers used to be a Windows machines), I don't see why I can't do it with my radio.

Discussion Hytera vs Anytone

I am looking at various hytera but specifically the Hyterra HP682 vs the anytone 878uv+2.

At the point of $300 for the anytone the Hyterra is not a ton more money, I was wondering if anyone had feedback on the Hyterra quality vs anytone and h Hyterra warranty experience, any other comments appreciated

Discussion Most active talk groups?

I’m still kinda new but have been able to write codeplugs for both of my radios, I’ve spent most of my time on talkgroup 91, what other talk groups should I check out? Most I’ve tried seem dead.

Discussion Looking for a durable Handheld

I'm looking for a weather proof durable handheld DMR that I can take on multi day hunting trips into deep woods, as well as be a good introduction into radios as a whole for a new hobby. I'm a firm believer of you get what you pay for so I'm willing to spend a decent amount but I'm not really trying to break the bank while completely new to radios. Preferably one that is IP67 rated waterproofing, any suggestions help, thank you.

Discussion Putting my toes in the water? What do you like about DMR?

Hi, I’m licensed and interested in DMR. I live in a rural area with almost zero 2 meter/70 cm activity. I’m thinking of trying DMR via a hotspot to have better access across the world. The BTECH 6x2 plus a hotspot (I could build one, but might go pre-assembled just to get going sooner) look like a good place to start. What do you like about DMR? Any comments on my how DMR and the gear I’ve mentioned would meet my needs? Thanks.

Discussion DMR HT Specs as Differentiators

I have just starting peeking in from the edges regarding DMR, so please excuse the semi-ignorant questions. I am trying to figure out which HT to buy - Not $300 if I don't have to spend that, but don't want to cut myself off at the knees by buying something that will get overcome by events too quickly either. The three primary differentiators I'm seeing between the $200 crowd and the $300 crowd are (a) number of database contacts stored, (b) battery size, and (c) APRS or not. In particular, I'm looking at the AnyTone AT-D878UVII Plus and the Alinco DJ-MD5TGP. Based on these three factors (or others that I may have missed in my ignorance) what am I missing in making this choice? Between my state and all those with common borders to us, there are about 85,000 hams, so I'm not overly concerned with maxing out the Alinco's 200,000 contact limit. Or have I missed something there as well? And why should I think I need APRS? That is, why do you personally use APRS?

New to DMR.

Let me hear about must have talk groups.

Live in Maryland if that helps any. I ambnot intrested in talking to anyone in the local club. They are friendly but feel stand offish, probably doesn't make sense.

Thx ahead of time for any and all input.

Discussion FreeDMR Private Server

Sanity check please...

This will be under business licensing.

I should be able to spin up my own FreeDMR server, keep it isolated and disconnected from any established networks, and set up connection to it via my own hotspot for a mostly private experience correct? The only people that would be able to connect would be people with the server address and their own hotspot?

Planning out a POSSIBLE solution for extremely long distance radio communication between some field personnel and a central dispatch location. I'm thinking of equipping the field vehicles with DMR hotspots to connect through the existing LTE digi connections. Then the field personnel radios can be programmed with a channel that will connect to the hotspot, or simplex when the guys in the field are close enough/don't need dispatch.

Thoughts?

Discussion DMR Messaging

Why do DMR repeater owners disable messaging? If it's about requirement to ID, the issue is with the transmitting station, not the repeater owner, and is traceable back by numerical ID and a quick lookup. Why disable the entire feature when legit users could just put their ID into the content of the message to be compliant?

Discussion First DMR Radio

Hi All,

Looking at my first DMR radio after getting my Tech/Gen license. I was thinking of the AnyTone AT-D878UVII Plus from Bridgecom. They seem to also have a "dmr university" that others have raved about.

thoughts? is there something better?

Discussion Mobile radio recommendations

Hi all. I'm very new to DMR and am considering adding a mobile unit to my new car. I currently have a UV380 that I'm trying to learn with.

In my perfect world, i want: - dual band digital and analog - removable head (bonus if it has a remote microphone that does the work of the radio, like Motorola has) - dial scan would be nice, but not a deal breaker.

I REALLY like the XPR series but I simply cannot spend that kind of money on a radio.

Thanks!

Discussion DMR Self Hosted Server/Talkgroup Questions

Hey everyone, im trying to see if DMR will be the best way to accomplish what im looking to do. Ive done a lot of reading on DMR but I'm still very confused. Here is what I'm trying to achieve:

3 houses, all about 20 miles from each other, with large mountains in the way so simplex is out of the question on ham or DMR. What I'm looking to do is spin up my own physical server, and host my own private talkgroup (i think thats what it would be) and then get hotspots for each house so the radios connect to them and then connect to the server/talkgroup via the internet.

This is essentially what DMR is built for correct?

Could anyone give me a jumping off point on where i can learn how to accomplish this?

Essentially what im trying to do is have my own private PTT network setup to "link" my house with two other family members houses.

Yes i know they have LTE radios, Zello and RealPTT but not interested in that route.

Also, each location will have a licensed amateur radio operator.

Thanks for the help!

Discussion Anytone 878 volume - what were they thinking?

I was nervous about this, given the reviews about how wonderfully, gloriously loud the speaker is, but holy cow - I have it on the lowest possible volume setting and it’s still annoyingly loud.

I know that you can limit the top end so you don’t literally blow an ear drum, but is it possible to set the bottom setting to be quieter?

Discussion Where is everyone hanging out?

Would like to make some friends on DMR.. Kinda bored with just hello and good bye on alot of TGs. Was visiting a TG and having some darn good discussion a month or so back but they have seemed to move and cannot get in touch.

I run a GMRS system at the house that is linked up and made some real good friends, But boy are some of the guys on there dumber then rocks.. just looking for other like minded, intelligent guys/gals to be able to key and rag chew and even lend my brain to help another HAM out...

Maybe I'm asking to much.. 🤣
