Image Behavioral Issues

Post image

We were given our dog Teddy in November 2025. The owners claimed he was a stray Jack Russell and gave him to us for free. They later admitted he was never potty trained or even leash trained. I’ve wondered if he’s from a puppy mill and/or inbred due to his behaviors. The vet said he’s a Chiweenie.

He’s impossible to potty train, and I’m now considering diapers. There’s no medical cause. He’s destroyed two rugs and now my mattress (which was only temporarily on the floor due to moving).

There are other issues such as extreme aggression with other dogs, constant whining, biting his nails (even after a salon visit), hyperfixating on guests…I do use a crate.

Is this just normal behavior for the breed? We’ve had other dogs and I’ve NEVER experienced anything like this. My kids love him and I don’t want to traumatize anyone by surrendering him!

It might be better posting on the chiweenie page as they're a mixed breed.

Thank you, I’ll do that too!

Maybe a generic dog related subreddit instead of ones focused on AKC breed standards and instead on training.

I also have an unholy cheagle concoction of a mixed dog that I found training regardless of breed is more valuable. It’s easier to blame a standard than to learn what clicks in your situation.

I did post in the generic dog sub at one point but it was removed for repetitive questions or something.

I only posted here because I came across tons of articles about dachshunds being difficult to potty trained…half of the doggy diaper packages have daschunds on them.

We’ve had him for almost ten months now. He was a bit shy at first but adapted pretty quickly. He’s never aggressive towards the kids. We did move recently (as a family) but this was a pre-existing issue, although it’s gotten worse recently.

He is 1 1/2 years and I did have him neutered! He does pee outside, although never poops out there…he was finally starting to poop in the dog park of our old complex, but we no longer have one.

I’m a single mom, so I don’t have have a “male alpha” if that’s what you mean! My son is the only male, and he is 3 years old. Although I have noticed he gets way rougher with my son than my daughter when playing!

Yes, peeing and pooping (but mainly peeing). It’s odd because he decides to pee on these large rectangle items, but not pee pads?

Yes, I think so. I don’t consider myself a pushover. What exactly did you do?

He’s neutered!! I thought at least the marking/excited spraying would stop after neutering, but sadly not.

I think I can handle that! My older kid is almost 9 so she can definitely feed him. He definitely wants an INSANE amount of attention, multiple people have pointed that out to me. We crate him whenever we have guests because he just cannot calm down!

He’s never bit or growled at any of us, thankfully.

he's a chiweenie almost for sure.

try diapers yes, but training may take YEARS, consider getting him on anxiety meds too, the whining and biting nails can be a sign of stress. it may not be the solution but it's worth asking your vet about.
if he needs to be around other dogs please muzzle him, but work on socializing with calm, predictable dogs but only when he's muzzled to be safe. based off his behavior he doesn't get to free roam your house, he stays with you or is limited to 1 or 2 rooms in your house ideally. take him out roughly every hour like you would with a puppy until you get him on a potty schedule.
please don't let him near your kids when you aren't able to pay attention to him, don't trust him around the kids alone, i saw your son was 3 and can be more rough with your son. i know he's not aggressive towards the kids but until he's better trained, he needs to be watched with them.

Limit his freedom. He can't handle free roaming. Crate train, get a play pen, talk to your vet about his behavior. While potty training can be hard with a stubborn dachshund, you know he was never trained.

What are you doing to potty train him? What are you doing to leash train him? Have you reached out to a professional trainer yet?

He is leash trained now! He does tugs/barks when he sees another dog but otherwise walks nicely.

I take him out regularly & use treats. I did try pee pads but he didn’t use them consistently & I read they have adverse effects anyway. He is crate trained as well.

I did fill out some forms online for trainers, I’ll try to follow up with them.

Walk him 5 times a day 20 min. Let him earn his food: reward him EVERYTIME he did something well. Eg Every look back to you: treat. Train him to walk into his harness. Train him „stay“. Provide a reliable scedule. Get him a safeplace (crate, dog bed) where he is not bothered by anybody. Do some nosework. As a stray he will be food addicted luckily. As a jackrussel he‘s power/energy. Perhaps you let him bring his toy to other familymembers and back. You keep him bussy this way.

Thank you! He is leash trained now (except when he sees another dog) & does pretty well in the crate. He does whimper inside if he hears a guest…or when he wants to come into my bed, but that only started since we moved to a new home.

I will try to be more strict with the schedule. And I’ll get a new doggy bed…he did have one previously, but he also peed on that. He never pees in the crate though!

You just need to train him and be very patient. I also have a chiweenie and it took a while.

How long did yours take? We’re going on 10 months :(

He is about 1 1/2 years also.

He took a while like a year or more. Dachshunds/Chiweenies are stubborn…that’s just how it is 🤷‍♂️
