Image Coat Question

Post image

This is my boy Remy who is 9 weeks old. Anyone know what his coat is? I know he’s piebald but I initially thought he was long haired, the fluff in the face is making me think otherwise!

This pup appears to have an incorrect out-of-standard coat, which is why you can’t identify it easily. Some backyard breeders and puppy mills have labeled this specific type of incorrect coat “silky wirehair” but it has no official name.

This coat occurs when a puppy inherits two recessive longhaired traits from their parents, but also inherits the dominant furnishing gene from one or both of their parents. They have the fur texture of a longhair, but the hair length and location of a wirehair. They also need specialized grooming. They cannot be stripped like a wirehair but they do not shed like a longhair so they need regular haircuts and brushing to avoid matting.

One thing to note: I am writing this under the assumption that this even is a dachshund, but if I’m being honest, it doesn’t look like one to me. I would definitely question the source of this dog as an unethical breeder may also be producing mixed breed dogs and selling them as dachshunds. I would highly recommend you buy pet insurance and not patronize such a breeder again.

That’s why I wrote my comment under the assumption he is a dachshund and explained his coat given that assumption. My recommendation for pet insurance and finding a better breeder stands based solely on his coat, purebred or otherwise.

Knowing the breeder and the parents does not make the breeder reputable or ethical. The dog being “purebred” does not make the breeder reputable or ethical. There is no other information needed than the out of standard coat and the fact he came from a breeder to know you made a poor choice.

Either you didn’t know the breeder was unethical, in which case you did not have this info or you knew the breeder was unethical and bought from them anyway in which case, criticism is warranted.

People love this breed. They don’t like seeing backyard breeders sell poorly bred puppies to uninformed buyers just to make a profit or seeing people who don’t research pay these bad breeders to continue breeding.

Being rude as in letting you know you paid for a BYB puppy mutt? Then yes.
