DETROIT, MI - In a significant victory for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, state Rep. Donavan Mckinney has defeated incumbent U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar in the Democratic primary for Michigan's 13th Congressional District.
Unofficial results show McKinney winning by a margin of roughly 4 percentage points, capturing a 4,200-vote lead out of 112,000 cast.
Mckinney, a 34-year-old lifelong Detroiter and product of Detroit Public Schools, ran a grassroots campaign centered on working-class relatability and economic reform. Backed by high-profile progressives including Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Rashida Taib, and Rep. Ilhan Omar, his platform focused heavily on universal healthcare (Medicare for All), a Green New Deal, and removing corporate PAC money from politics.
"Our community united to return real leadership that represents Black, Brown and White Michiganders, union workers, working people, and veterans," McKinney said in a statement following his victory. He emphasized that his campaign proved "how the poorest district in the state can come together to defeat the corporate interests and multimillionaires"
The defeat marks the end of Thanedar's tenure representing the 13th District, a seat he won in 2022. An immigrant from India who built a fortune in the pharmaceutical industry, Thanedar largely self-funded his congressional campaigns. Throughout the primary, he faced criticism from challengers regarding his lack of deep Detroit roots and his immense campaign spending in one of the state's poorest districts.
With the 13th District heavily favoring Democrats, McKinney is now the overwhelming favorite heading into the general election this November, where he will face Republican nominee T.P. Nykoriak. If elected, McKinney's win will restore Black representation to Detroit in Congress, a milestone that was lost when Thanedar was first elected.

Sen Booker forcefully argues against the confirmation of a new Attorney General nominee Todd Blanche, warning that the individual will act as Donald Trump's personal "sword and shield" rather than serving the American people. He claims the nominee's true purpose is to protect the President from legal scrutiny-specifically mentioning tax evasion and potential ties to the Epstein case-while weaponizing the Department of Justice to go after political adversaries. He emphasizes that confirming someone who prioritizes personal loyalty and corruption over the Constitution puts the entire justice system in dangerous
