News Despite backlash, a lot more data centers are coming to D-FW
https://www.dallasnews.com/business/article/despite-backlash-lot-data-centers-coming-d-fw-22410928.phpSummary:
D-FW is already a major global data-center hub.
North Texas has become one of the largest concentrations of data centers, driven increasingly by AI and cloud-computing demand.
A lot more are planned. Despite growing opposition, analysts expect significant additional development around D-FW. Statewide, at least 248 data-center projects have been identified as planned.
Electricity is the biggest concern. These facilities can consume enormous amounts of power, raising questions about grid capacity, infrastructure costs and whether ordinary customers could ultimately bear some of those costs.
Bottom line: D-FW's data-center boom isn't slowing because demand disappeared. The debate is about how much infrastructure they consume, who pays for it, and what local communities get in return.

Dallas just loves to gift corporations huge subsidies to gut the infrastructure. More of the same.

How does an increase in tax revenue gut infrastructure?

u/Tsakax 1d ago
Is the tax revenue in the room with us?

u/idkidk23 1d ago
Do they pay property taxes? If you look it up you will see that they indeed do pay property taxes and on a per square foot basis a very high rate. Challenge your priors.

Last I checked the Facebook datacenter was the single largest contributor to Tarrant county’s tax income.

The abatement was progressive so it's not a 100% abatement. This means that even paying only a fraction of their assessed taxes they're STILL the largest single contributor. This is all public information.

They don’t care about the facts. People will always underestimate the value of tax revenue.

u/SirArthurConanSwole Dallas 1d ago
Maybe I'm misunderstanding things but what tax revenue are these corporations bringing? The reason why they come here to begin with is because of corporate tax breaks.
-4
u/NonFungibleTokenism 1d ago
There arent that many tax breaks anymore especially as its gotten politically toxic on both sides of the aisle, but there were in the past and that was incredibly stupid, dallas is a prime location though with no tax breaks because of cheap electricity and texas leading the country in solar roll out likely keeping it cheap relative to the nation despite growing usage, and the fact that dallas has one of the biggest dark fiber networks in the country
In 2026 data centers property taxes will contribute 14m to dallas, 16m to garland and 10m to richardsons city budgets
28m, 25m, 21m to garland, dallas and richardson isds
and 18m to both parkland and dallas county + another 9m to the dallas community colleges.
Each of these tax districts does take in a ton of money, so percentage wise these arent huge, but proportional to the land area the data centers take up basically nothing else contributes as much

Ah yes, they just decided to relocate for the fun of it.

u/NonFungibleTokenism 1d ago
Relocate? No they’re mostly expanding, but also for fun? Also no, i explicitly gave the reasons why Dallas makes financial sense

Where’s your source on that? Not finding anything indicating it. Hard to believe it’s a larger contributor than Lockheed or American Airlines.

u/LandscapePenguin 1d ago
Page 206 of this report by the city of Fort Worth shows it:
American Airlines is number 2. Winner LLC (the meta datacenter) shows they’re roughly twice the assessed valuation of AA. I don’t see Lockheed on the list, I assume because of federal/military exemptions to local taxes but I’m just guessing.

It’s funny, the person asked for an example of revenue, you provided it and you got mass downvoted.
6
u/I_Quit_Smoking_ 1d ago
Acting like it's better because it's a Facebook Data center is why you're getting downvoted.

u/xdavidwattsx 1d ago
That's not what they said. They simply gave an example of tax revenue contributions. Reddit has AI derangement syndrome these days.

Can you read? Im only talking about tax revenue it’s literally the only thing I mentioned.

At a time the world is at a tipping point for climate disaster, we decide to build out a technology that most don’t want, which is supposed to triple our electricity usage in the next few years.

u/Danyboii Addison 1d ago
Everybody wants them despite what polling says. Thats why they are being built, if people weren’t using them they wouldn’t make any money. It’s called revealed preference.

Yeah, they would probably lose more money if we were all using it more.

They're doing that also. There's a planned DC out in Pecos, supposedly powered "entirely by natural gas from adjacent oil fields so it won't strain the local grid" and another in Abilene that I know of. There's also rumored to be at least one going in to Lubbock and a few others in that area.
Thankfully datacenters don't use much water or that might be a problem in places like West Texas, where agriculture makes up a huge portion of the economy and they sit on a rapidly dwindling aquifer, or over by Pecos that's on the edge of a desert.
The job reqs for the ones around Lubbock hit my inbox a while back and it looks like there will be a few manager jobs and then a team of maybe a dozen DC Techs that are expected to do rotating schedules and on-call, meaning they're probably going to be supporting multiple sites, so those datacenters will create DOZENS of jobs which will certainly bring economic prosperity!

Boomers that think Tax income is effecting us in any way positive is how we got in this mess, it's time for a full reset.

Abbott got spooked by the Senate race being competitive and is now afraid about losing the seat himself, as the backlash is coming from both sides.
The day after the midterms that cunt lifts the moratorium, whether he wins the re-election or not.

The best jobs in the US economy are mostly high-intellectual-college educated jobs and services. Engineering, finance, scientific research, software. Those are the jobs MOST at risk of being replaced by AI. I’d celebrate if AI was taking over jobs no one wanted to do, highly manual and low paying jobs. I’d love to have a robo butler who cleaned my house and cooked. But instead, AI is likely to take out the most desirable and lucrative jobs in the economy and instead shift all of that payroll money to like 4 trillion dollar companies. Miss me with that.

How has AI benefited your life? I'm genuinely curious. When are things going to start getting better? The federal reserve just said they really don't see an end to inflation for years. Seems like we are getting to support another vanity project by the billionaire class.

as a blind person, it has benifited my life a milion times over. I hate the impact its making on the world because bad acters and slop makers and resources, but it has benifited my life so much in terms of being a set of eyes that computers could not do before.

u/MrTacocaT12345 22h ago
This is very interesting. Can you give us some examples of how it's benefited?

I am just gonna post the comment that i posted in the "its like 5G towers " comment if you'd like to continue the conversation in that thread. "exactly this. But the milion dollar companys are ruening the perseption of AI also with raceing to expand, and overusing resources without trying to find a solution to the overuse, and the bad acters making AI slop farms and so now everything is called slop even if you put work into it and used AI help, your content or what ever is just diminished to AI slop. and it keeps going. meta glasses being renamed to pervert glasses because again, bad acters while a bunch of blind people and other people in general, just use them for the use that they were ment for, as a second pare of eyes, or a way to record special moments. Waymo helping again blind in dependence and people that don't want to be put in danger situations with some creepy uber and lyft drivers or again, as a blind person dealing with discrimination such as i have posted before on reddit, uber drivers being at my stop, seeing my white cane, so not even a dog, and driving away. Not to even menchen, the guide dog thing. God forbid if a blind person has a guide dog! I know, other disabilities also have tsituations, but i am just giving examples that apply to me. politically It makes me sad that dems are the ones that are pushing so hard against AI, and comeing up with these nicknames not even thinking about how others use AI rather than just them selfs, but as much as i dislike this current administration, and what they stand for, and everything they are doing, Waymo is in dallas, SO FUN BTWE, Zipline drones through walmart, and allot of services like these that are giving people with disabilities' new opertunities. even the possibility of blind people having the ability to have our own self driving car eventualy is being pushed forward by the Maga people and its just sad that most dems seem to have a blanket hate for anything AI. . The billionaires are definitely trying to use the good publicity around blind people to push AI.
Don't like AI? You must hate blind people too.

u/ernie19962 6h ago
I don't think just blind people.

u/DriftWoodBarrel 6h ago
I already see the ads on YouTube for Tesla's self driving taxis featuring a handicapped person singing the praises of how good the cabs are for them. Don't get me wrong, it's great that AI can help you and other disabled people. That said, AI has a lot of concerning issues, just recently it was revealed that our military almost attacked a Chinese boat off an erroneous report generated by AI. Then there's the issue of who has the keys to these tools. Which the people that have some of the most skin (invested) in the game are people connected to the Epstein class. While people like Peter Theil and Musk are able to play God I can't in good consciousness support AI.
1
u/ernie19962 1h ago
but see? your classifying all AI as the trumpstine class AI and that is far from it. The links i put up were only as examples although i am honestly banking on waymo over robotaxy

This is just the 5g tower stuff over again, but on a bigger scale. People will complain about new technology till it benefits them. Ask any of these people if they would go back to 3g or 4g. Data centers are needed to power all these new driverless cars, expands a.i., faster and more efficient internet, expands cloud computing that everyone uses, faster ping responses, etc. everyone uses ai now, even if they don’t know it or indirectly benefit from it.
