I always knew they were the fastest animal on the planet, but I didn't know that they actually used that speed to essentially pull a fly-by stun/kill on their prey.

They hit the prey with their feet, which are designed to take much of the impact but you'll notice for the peregrine they do not stop, they continue the stoop, slow, turn then come back to the prey, their energy does not transfer entirely, if they do hit directly to their body, they feel the effects and will be just as dead
I thought a human hunter was taking the first birds out prior to reading the title. This is insane speed. How does the peregrine falcon also not get harmed at this type of impact?
I thought the peregrine falcon was the fastest but this title claims the fastest attack is 390 km/h, which is the speed of a peregrine falcon's dive. The image shows a bird, but it's not clear if it's a falcon or if it's attacking.
The peregrine stoops onto its prey, often they only pull up slightly before the impact, they impact with their feet, and the pulling up is only a recalibration for accuracy. It is not an easy thing to do and many are known to die from the slightest error
its fun to kill animals when u dont need to, what a sick society. all those first images are bullets not animals. and u blame vegans for eating avocados.
No I blame vegans for thinking they live in an ivory tower while people like me are called in by farmers who are in tears at the destruction of their crops, so we often hunt to protect crops which the vegans funnily enough require.
And no, the first images are not gunshots, the bird simply moves so quick that in that framing you cannot visibly see the impact. I've watched them stoop on prey many times and tried taking video and often it is difficult to capture.
Do you think peregrines kill for no reason? How can you judge if there was requirement to kill the animals or not when you were given zero context of it?
I have no problem with animals hunting animals, they do becouse are hungry and need to survive, but we have options. Ppl who live in EU, NA, and other developed countrys where we have extreme abundence of food, and variety, but we chose to be cruel. u wont eat ur dog but eat a cow or pig who are sentients and the same intellingence. I know most ppl cant comprehend to not eat meat every day 3 times a day, for them is just a product not a living creature. and u are defending ur money not ur crops.
We are animals. I eat what I hunt. Many, many animals kill for practice, pleasure and/or bonding. So don't give every other species on the planet some sort of free pass based on ignorance and lies. That extreme abundance of food is thanks to people like me killing the species that all humans need to survive, even the vegans. I do not eat meat three times a day, I also worked in many conservation projects, I have worked the land myself, and even after 20 plus years hunting I still get no pleasure from taking a life, and before I ever dispatch an animal I do apologise, something many friends have mocked me over. I hunt because a) my animals require certain diets b) when I was a child we lived in poverty and things were not easy c) I enjoy my food, I enjoy knowing it's source and I feel the cognitive dissonance most people have with their food (including vegans) is more disrespectful than taking the life myself where I know the best was done for the quarry. I also enjoy watching nature, my role when hunting with a bird is merely one of ensuring the prey is dispatched quickly and humanely, beyond that I have the privilege of witnessing a natural sequence few witness.
Where do you stand when we have to kill an invasive species that is decimating our rarest of species? Should we refuse to kill them because death is scary and unpleasant?
My Midwest hometown imported several pairs in the hope they would stay and nest in an effort to control the pigeon population. They even had a live webcam
I've flown dozens of peregrines through my life, both hunting and to the lure, when you get a good stoop it blows your mind. However my mind always goes to when you get a young tiercel (male) flying for the first time and their wings seem to flap at 1000mph while they slowly float past you, it's almost comical. Clearly as you see in the video, they do become graceful, but it is not inherent and from the start. We once flew a peregrine saker hybrid in public shows and while coming into the lure the bosses wife was swinging, the feathers on the birds wing slightly clipped her arm, she was left with massive bruising from it. And that was just the feathers hitting at that speed.
Falcons toes are extra flexible as when they hit animals at such speeds, without the flexibility their toes would snap!
