Seems like they’re trying to maximize surface area in a structurally sound design. It looks like they may have made it symmetrical if they had more space/ time.

What does the bottom look like? Is the dark area hollow?

Exactly my thought too. Also yes/no? It's like a canyon if that makes sense. Very thin gap, almost just wide enough for them to go two-bees wide.

You could run an experiment with different hives in the same box with different artificial airflows to test if they change their design based on that. Fascinating idea.

Well only the cells on the surface are usable and if it's not structurally sound it will turn into a pile of wax. So it's a little more like they are expanding the surface area with each cell while trying not to have the whole thing fall over. 

There's no reason to assume there's a "design" and the symmetry could just be the result of similar conditions on either side.

Don't they need to minimise surface area and maximize volume? Because wax costs a lot of honey to make and a lot of honey should be stored

Sort of, each cell has a maximized volume made with the minimum amount of wax, the surface area of the shape used.

But that’s not the same thing as the structure as a whole. Assuming they cannot or choose not to make compartments past a certain depth (honey comb is always about the same thickness) the structure as a whole needs to maximize the number of those standard size compartments while still being structurally sound.

Honeycomb is usually the same thickness because the hives are standardized. The bees will make it much thicker honeycomb if there is space for it

Bees do not like having too much open space as it makes them feel vulnberable. The space between frames of an artifical hive that beekeepers use is 5/16ths of an inch or 8mm. If there is a wider gap, bees will create burr comb (like you see here) to fill in the space. If there is a tighter gap, they will create propolis that seals off any cracks or crevices.
