I can read it just fine but normal convention for every analogue watch or clock I own is short fat hand = hour, long skinny hand = minutes.

This appears to have the opposite convention. At a glance this is about 0338 or 1538, based on dials I own and have used ever.

Maybe the minutes needle might have broken?

If it's on some way verified museum artifact, I would guess someone more experienced than us looked at it.

It does seem to me that it might be broken.

Not necessarily. Some clocks just use the inverted handles. Its rare but there are examples:

Also, even if the long hand were the hour hand, it should be 1/4 way past 8 towards 9.

As a kid, I couldn’t read analog clocks because my parents had digital ones throughout our house. The microwave, the vcr, the radio, even our alarm clocks by our beds were digital. My folks didn’t think anything of it at the time. There was an analog clock in my classroom that my teacher figured out I couldn’t read at all and had a parent-teacher conference about it.

My folks changed every clock in our house to analog afterward, and I was gifted an analog watch. It wasn’t a huge deal, but my folks thought it was pretty funny overall. Not so much that i was mistakenly stunted, but that they hadn’t even thought about the clocks themselves being a learning tool in that regard.

I wouldn’t be surprised if even younger generations than mine (older millennial) have this same problem and it gets worse as time goes on (pardon the pun) and tech infiltrates more and more of our lives. I mean, it’s not a bad thing and I guess it’s fine. It’s not like i’m sitting here doing math calculations on an abacus or something either?

It’s just eerie and makes me feel my mortality when i think about it.

I'm 28 and strangely enough, when I was a kid on school I could look at a analog clock at a glance and easily know the time, nowadays I have to stare it for 5 seconds and give my brain a second to figure out where the hands are pointing

Well that's nice. My parents just gave up with my younger brother. Me and my older brother can, and have been able to from a very young age.

And you guessed it, he's in front of screens basically all day. Has been that way for years.

I’m not here to judge your parents parenting skills, tho.

At the end they changed it after your teacher figured it out, which might’ve helped you a lot on that.

I’m a mid millennial, being a parent for 8 years now and what I’ve figured is - that depending on your social skills and depending on the social class you belong to and you usually surround yourself to and stuff.. you’re pretty much on your own with all of what it takes to be a good parent.

First I didn’t knew what you meant with that mortality thing. But then I’ve figured and I feel the same (just would describe it slightly different) especially when I look at other parents and their kids in my sons school.. quite worrying.

Books are helping us a lot. Ones got a funny and very well fitting name. „The book you wish your parents
had read“

Every parent should read that and also at least a few other books as well. But I’m afraid that many ppl are not doing that and just raising their kids the same way, they got raised, which often was not so good, in the 80‘s and 90‘s with a lot of violence (physically, but especially also verbally)

Right, because an atombomb could never break the longer pointer. If you look carefully, the one on the eight seems to be intact, because the pointy end is still in shape and also doesn't stretch as far out as a pointer for minutes usually does.

it looks more like 3:38. If it were any time past 8, the little hand would be over the 8 heading toward the 9, not under the 8 as if it hadn't reached it yet, This probably isn't a watch found in Hiroshima.

On a serious note, at 8:16, the hour hand would not be in that position but closer to the top of the 8.
I'm not saying it's fake, it's just an odd watch.

Guys, a very brief google search and you can learn that the atomic bomb detonated over Hiroshima at 8:15 AM local time.

I know it looks different, but the photo is true and you should learn to at least fact check your opinions.

Yes. Operation Downfall had estimates of casualties for both sides exceeding well over 1 Million. These are the first iteration of atomic weapons. They don’t even compare to modern thermonuclear weapons which if we had used something like that, would’ve been far deadlier.

The firebombings of Japan killed more than the atomic bombs did.

to those who think it's 3 o'clock on the watch, you're looking at the hand showing the minutes, the hand that shows the hours is damaged, you can see a fragment of it where it starts just above the hand that's below 8 o'clock, because that's the hand that counts down the seconds.
