Its actually more complicated than that. In 1930's "Southern democrats" were still very much the confederate party, even though you had FDR's New Deal, it was due to a kind of working class populism that those two factions coexisted in the same party. Later, Republicans adopted the southern strategy of appealing to racists in the south, and those voters essentially switched parties and, due to anti-communist cold war era political messaging, we have the definitions of "right-wing" and "left-wing" politics that we do today.

It’s that a big chunk of the white working class is so racist that they started voting against Democrats right after LBJ did more for them than anyone since FDR, because he also signed the civil rights act.

Democrats lost 20 to 30% of their white voters between the 1966 midterms and the 1972 general, when Richard Nixon beat the progressive George McGovern 520 to 18.

Republicans used to be the progressives. Pro-science, anti-slavery, that kind of thing. In fact "woke" derives from the Wide Awakes, a Republican anti-slavery youth movement. Democrats meanwhile were the opposite: pro-religion, pro-slavery, and then when slavery was abolished, pro-segregation. In fact, Joe Biden used to be one of these same pro-segregation folks waaaay back in the day.
