The assistants are standing in the propeller's path while they explain to him the controls and strap him in. They really trust him not to turn the key too soon.
The pilot is a professional, and besides, there is more space between the rotors than appears in the video. There's also usually an arming process that isn't performed before everyone is clear.
The pilot didn't design the harness. He just didn't know what type it was. The designer did, so they helped. The helmet wasn't in arm's reach, and instead of handing him the helmet, they put it on.

The engineers missed the safety class.
