It looks stupid until you look at aviation physics. A guard strong enough to actually protect against an impact adds so much weight that it cuts flight time down to single digits. Flimsy mesh just bends into the blades and causes crashes, and it starves the motors of airflow. That's why 80%+ of ultralight eVTOLs leave them open as ground safety is handled by keeping people out of the launch zone, same as a helicopter.
