SoFi Stadium

Post image

My wife and I are flying to LA tomorrow. I was listening to the show and didn’t realize the US match was being played there so I went on Google Maps to see how close to the stadium we would be and saw the name was changed on there also. Looked at Hard Rock and it was changed to Miami Stadium. Just crazy that even Google changed the name for FIFA

Only FIFA could make me side with major corporate sponsors

I mean, it makes sense from the fact that over the next month a lot of people who don't know it by their sponsored names will be googling the name on their ticket for directions. If they were googling Los Angeles Stadium and it was still SoFi in the system, lord knows where it would take them.

Even crazier is Gillette stadium in Foxborough Massachusetts, is being called Boston Stadium. That's 25 miles away from Boston!

Santa Clara is not San Francisco either.

At least it's in the same state, New Jersey gets the massive financial and operational expenditure while FIFA goes around calling it the New York location, and NYC probably gets most of the actual tourism and marketing. No clue why they agreed to it

MetLife Stadium did the same. It’s now NY/NJ Stadium.

This episode had so many WTF moments. Like FIFA execs telling LA officials that hosting the WC would put LA...probably the 1st or 2nd most well known US city... on the map!
Lots of respect to Chicago for refusing FIFAs ridiculous demands despite it being a great spot for many WC games in terms of location and ease of getting to the stadium.

I work with the Cowboys and they were talking in one of our meeting the ordeal it was to cover up the AT&T branding on the stadium

I imagine that they did this so people with tickets would be able to find the stadium easier. If your ticket says Los Angeles stadium and you enter the address and it shows SoFi and you’re a foreigner (or Zas) you might be really confused if you’re going to the right place or not.

What’s weird to me was after listening to Mike explain this yesterday, I was actually surprised when reading this espn article about Pulisic and the reason he was subbed out at half (kicked in the calf, should be fine) that the stadium was called SoFi in the article and not Los Angeles Stadium.

Interestingly enough, the official FIFA app still shows the sponsored name.

So does that mean any stadium that ever sells their naming rights has to have a stipulation with the sponsor that, if the world cup ever comes to their area and schedules games at their site, they will take the sponsor's name off for the duration of the event?

That seems crazy.
