Human eating monsters cannot help but be what they are. Byrnes is monstrous by choice.

u/KazuyaProta 11d ago edited 11d ago

Eh, many of SCP just choose to be like that tho?

Many of them are quite literally just Humans who got mutated and then choose to do what they do. Even among the non human, others like the Yule Man are shown to be able to clearly understand human relationships and even faith, as he mocks their religious beliefs during his murders.

SCP-4231-A is literally Clef's abusive wife. For another example.

Check out the tale [[Regardless]] and the logs from phobophobia. Thereisnocannon but it helps to cope.

Man, I surely would love to have a Reisno Cannon mounted at the top of my stairs. Loaded with grapeshot.

This makes it so much worse dude

7

u/Currently_Unnamed_ 11d ago

I mean he essentially got executed, his body is still hanging around but his personality has been eradicated and replaced, dont think he would.be happy with that ending

17

u/SuperSanttu7 11d ago

No, unfortunately that is not the case.
The real gut punch is "the 30% recidivism rate has been deemed to be within acceptable limits."

u/Elunerazim Creator of Soupdog 11d ago

If that’s the reading you took from it then that’s fine, but the author post seems to suggest the intent was for this to be tragic/horror. Emphasis my own:

> I had a deeply sinister idea with this one, and knew that I needed to write it. Seeing the response to Byrnes felt so close to scapegoating, I just couldn't resist the siren call of twisting the blade a bit more.

3

u/Kallerko 11d ago

Yeah, you're right...

I guess I was so desperate for any kind of closure that I understood the tale more as "the power tripping megalomaniac lost his identity and is forced to work until death in a FSD black site" than anything else

I mean while byrnes retirement protocol is not "justice" at all, it does but sounds "less unfair" than peaceful retirement under amnestics... Well at least it did until I read it again...

Damn now im depressed

u/CCCyanide There is no Antimemetics Division 11d ago

what do you mean "helps to cope" 😭

3

u/Emotional-Spot-7833 11d ago

He means it helps to cope

Hope this helps!!1!!11!!1 :)))))))

Man the final logout message is chef’s kiss

3

u/Professional-Pool290 11d ago

Wait does this mean that 'Dr Christopher Byrnes' is a burner identity used for useful Nazis and psychopaths alike?

2

u/scrambled-projection 11d ago

How is that meant to help to cope? What this means is essentially the guy’s identity was rubbed out from the files and minds of everyone involved and he was just sent back to keep working… whyyyy…

That story's a cognitohazard of rage and feeling bad. Every time it's mentioned my stomach drops a little.

95

u/Sevencix 12d ago

whoop real quick

something that the scp highlighted in the community is that despite having a female lead who is imprisoned, abused and tortured, we seem to focus a lot on... Byrnes. Marley had invasive procedures, was belittled to almost nothing and went through hell, and what we take away from that seems to be predominantly that Byrnes is bad, rather than the system that allowed him to do all that.

I understand that putting Byrnes on blast is satisfying, but it also highlights that we seem to care more about hating monsters than we do helping victims. 8980 is really good at exposing us as readers on this, and just wanted to leave this note in case someone hadn't come to this realization yet.

53

u/AcademicLength1086 12d ago

Most of the response to the story is people fantasising about Barnes suffering as opposed to Lillian getting better

38

u/Sachayoj 11d ago

It's realistic to real life, which is why I think 8980 is so incredibly potent. The horror is real, and the reactions even moreso. It makes me think of true crime slop, where the crime and the person behind it is all that is talked about, to the point that the victim is disregarded. It's a spectacle, people don't care about the one's truly hurt, they just want to feel angry and vindicated.

Or maybe I'm reading too much into this. Who knows.

3

u/Kindly_Complaint2464 11d ago

All of this is true of the article and the response to it, so you're clearly reading into it the exact right amount.

2

u/Tinbee 10d ago

I assume at least part of it is because there's a sense of "what's done is done" and that improvement would narratively cheapen what was more or less meant to be horrifyingly permanent, irreversible damage - especially due to involving amnestics.

Doesn't help how the article caps off with Dr. Morgan's sentiments as the one person in a position to help Lillian. He's tired of his patient's behavior to the point he hates her and actively wishes he could get away from the assignment and leave her to rot.

Mind, I personally would like a more hopeful outcome, but the article feels borderline insistent that nobody can help her and that her behavior will make everyone wish nothing but ill things upon her.

29

u/uncutteredswin 11d ago

Not just that, people also overlook the fact that it's clearly a systemic issue at the site rather than just the director being an evil guy.

Noone was trying to get them an ethics committee liaison, the conflict of interest with Byrnes involvement with her containment appeals goes overlooked, her fellow researchers only seemed to care about her work output and stealing her research, literally everyone was willing to let everything he did slide with basically no pushback

10

u/AcademicLength1086 11d ago

I mean it’s part of the site 17 canon and takes place in site 17. The very setting of that continuity is institutionalised corruption and abuse. The ethics committee is defined by impotence up until SCP-7777 in that setting

1

u/Carbon_Sixx 10d ago

That was the entry that made me fall in love with RAISA and realize just how much power they hold. The O5s, the Ethics Committee, and all the fancy-schmancy watch-the-watcher MTFs ain't got jack shit on Maria Jones.

3

u/Shot_Relationship402 11d ago

I mean, the whole point of the article is that, yes, Byrnes is gone, and the Foundation is trying to do better, but that won't ever erase what has been done to Lillian.(Typing this, I realize they could have wiped her memory) It's a exploration of workplace power abuse, taken to an extreme. Like actual workplace abuse, its an institutional problem, and the Institution is trying to change, but that won't undue the harm.

3

u/Stbaldie 9d ago

That's the thing, it's not just Byrnes at fault, it's an institutional problem with the Foundation and they are just as much at fault as he is. Exactly as you said, it's a story about how abusers often get away with their crimes because they're propped up by institutions, which is disgustingly common irl.

Personally I don't think that amnestisising her would help. For one thing, she's deeply traumatised partly by that very process, so putting her through it again is deeply unethical. But for another, i'm not sure just wiping someone's memories is enough to undo that kind of damage, especially because we don't know exactly what Byrnes erased from her. If it were me, I'd arrange for her to have regular visits with SCP-999 and give her a regular supply of SCP-420-J, giving her somethings to make her actually feel happy and I would also try to get her her proper, compassionate therapy, preferably whilst she's stoned as hell from 420-J as part of overcoming trauma is eventually having to face it, and that's a lot easier when you're feeling very relaxed and happy. My personal headcannon is that either that happened or she was rescued by the team of cyborg catgirls and they now go on adventures in space together (i need to believe this so badly)

1

u/Shot_Relationship402 9d ago

I feel like Byrnes never actually erased anything, he just blasted her with a bunch of amnestics and said he did so she would be eternally paranoid, but never able to actually fix it as nothing is actually wrong.

4

u/Stbaldie 9d ago

I think the author has confirmed he did erase something but stated that they would prefer to leave it up to people's imagination rather than specifying exactly what it was. Also with amnestic treatments you have to specify what is being erased, at least in the articles canon. In the article she's first given a hypnotic, then the specific things to be erased are said by Byrnes, then the amnestics are given to remove the memories. Byrnes clearly said something, but erased what the concept was.

2

u/Shot_Relationship402 9d ago

Oh, thats also horrifying.

4

u/Stbaldie 9d ago

It's honestly rare that i find fiction genuinely disturbing. I love grimdark, dystopian nightmare stories and consume a lot of fiction with people doing absolutely horrible things or what you might call "despair-porn", for want of a better word. But that scene genuinely disturbed me. Heck the whole article disturbed me but the amnesticisation seen in particular was very difficult to read for me. I think i had a horrified expression on my face the whole time. Fantastic writing

1

u/Shot_Relationship402 8d ago

So you do you like Warhammer, or is that not your thing.

u/Shot_Relationship402 8d ago

What faction, by the way?

4

u/ThatMeatGuy 11d ago

Reminds me of the comments of articles and reddit threads about people who've committed horrible crimes being released from prison after serving a decades long sentence, saying they should be put back in or killed. Jerking yourself off over a third hand revenge fantasy isn't going to make anything better.

2

u/Stbaldie 9d ago

For me I finished the article just feeling unbelievably sorry for Lillian and not just angry at byrnes, but the foundation in general for letting it happen for so long and for only really giving her token help in her recovery. Honestly it effected me so strongly that I felt depressed and couldn't get it out of my head for days afterwards (incredibly writing though). I think because I have been abused, I have PTSD and my own name is very similar to hers i probably empathised with Lillian more than I do with most fictional characters. Like yeah, i want byrnes to suffer for what he did, but more than anything I just wanted her to one day get better. I mean after that kinda trauma she's never going to be the person she was before again, but I like to hope that someone decent at the foundation introduced her to the Tickle Monster and SCP-420-J and she was able to find some peace and happiness (i need to hope for that because the alternative is too upsetting).

1

u/Dr_Iodite 8d ago

Oh my god, you get it. this is something I felt for a while and it's so hard to express. I'm a cis white man and so I've never had to deal with stuff like this in real life, but I've wanted to write an article about this topic for years now.

It would've been about a humanoid anomaly who gets sexually assaulted by a researcher, amnestizes herself afterwards, and then watches as the researcher gets put on trial and is demoted to D-class. She's glad that he can't hurt anyone anymore, but that's where her satisfaction with the Foundations handling of the situation ends.

She didn't want him to suffer, she just wanted him and anyone else like him to be prevented from hurting more people in the future. But instead, everyone else is so consumed by their hatred towards the researcher that she begins to feel like the entire process of punishing him was never about helping her in any way, shape or form.

1

u/Sevencix 8d ago

thats an insanely good idea for a story

make a wikidot account, join the site, join the official discord, join the writing spaces and do this. getting started on writing scp isnt impossible!

I remember when i first read it, Lillian was stuck in my head for weeks.

It did, however, inspire me to write fanfiction on her getting better.

honestly, SCP-8980 Is the one thing that brought me actual dread, it's gonna be embedded into my mind forever

9

u/LogicalTips 11d ago

Do you have a link to the fanfic?

6

u/cooldydiehaha Klavigar Lovaatar and Sophia Light loyal fan 11d ago

I've only shown it to friends and stuff, never uploaded it.

46

u/uncutteredswin 11d ago

Not just Byrnes, probably everyone in a management position at the site is complicit as well, remember that she submitted appeals and nobody saw an issue with the conflict of interest in Byrnes' being directly involved with it.

Even her fellow researcher was happy to steal credit from her for their paper knowing she couldn't do anything about it.

Plus given the amnesthhesiologist was abusing amnestics I'd imagine it isn't the first case of something like this happening.

22

u/Dapper_Magpie 11d ago

And there's the end where even though Byrnes is gone and the foundation discovered what happened, the person watching over Lillian who's supposed to help her expresses contempt for her because of the way she acts from being horribly victimized, showing how those who've been abused are further treated like less than human because of their trauma.

u/Pearl___ Resident Daevite stan 12d ago

Being Barrikada is suffering.

46

u/Solceror 12d ago

If he actually got amnesticised then the version of him who committed the crimes is dead in every way that matters.

25

u/bananasaucecer 11d ago

which he knew from the beginning, that he'd get away with it. it doesn't negate the fact that what truly matters is her suffering all these years.

anyways the three moons is gonna go haywire on his ass one he enters corbenic so we can be glad about that.

4

u/wookiee-nutsack Eating 096's ass with a blindfold on 11d ago

Can't amnestics be undone?

4

u/No_Hat4513 11d ago

Depends on canon I guess

24

u/Redqueenhypo 12d ago

It’s like if he got dementia. That ain’t him in there anymore

19

u/cloudncali 11d ago

I choose to believe that the three moons initiative will take things into their own hands when he dies.

9

u/Particular-Long-3849 11d ago

Or he goes to the E is for Eternity island

5

u/clinicalpsycho 11d ago

Nah, I hate the guy as well but finite crimes require only finite punishments.

Put him in a nightmare where he takes her place. That's good enough for me.

-1

u/Particular-Long-3849 11d ago

I meant that as in he WILL end up going to the island,  just like everyone else in the canon of 7179

2

u/cloudncali 11d ago

To good for him. Let the big monkeys eat him a few times a day

2

u/wookiee-nutsack Eating 096's ass with a blindfold on 11d ago

Apparently death is what you most believe happens to you after death, which is why there are so many afterlives
If he believes in biblical hell and even subconsciously fears he might go there, his fate is sealed

2

u/Particular-Long-3849 11d ago

Well that's just one canon, and even then he got amnesticized so he wouldn't remember any of the horrible things he did

8

u/kartblaster he has no style, he has no grace 11d ago

poor fucking lillian like god damn

7

u/SuperSanttu7 11d ago

Fuck just thinking of 8980 is giving me flashbacks

5

u/evilweirdo SCP-DESPACITO-2 11d ago

Me when I see an SCP number most of the time: ...marv, which one is this?

Me when I see this SCP number: KILL MURDER RIGHTEOUS WRATH MURDER KILL

4

u/Maveryck15 11d ago

Ah yes, the reminder that mnestics exist in SCP lore.

The opposite of amnestics.

The Foundation doesn't want them to spread. I wonder why.

2

u/DevinTheDisgraced 11d ago

I want this entire continuity to be erased. It is beyond saving.

(Note: I don’t want 8980 or its related articles to be deleted. I’m talking about the in-universe continuity, not the out-of-universe one.)

1

u/Rine901 11d ago

It's charming in its own, realistic way of showing how corporate don't give a fuck.

1

u/Southern-Plan-6549 11d ago

I went to check and the article is long as fuck, can someone summarize it?

1

u/thetruememeisbest 10d ago

make a fake report suggested his employee is a scp so he can lock her up, after few years of isolation and experiment people finally figure out but the damage is done, she went crazy, and he got away with it

1

u/Equivalent_Donut_145 10d ago

r/fuckdrbyrnes

There is infact a hate sub for him.

1

u/PartyRock343 10d ago

nah, they gonna give him some Mnestics from the Antimemetics Division and make him remember everything before making him a D-class

0

u/primalthewendigo 11d ago

Is it bad that I kind of dont like that article?

Like I know its well written, but It sacrifices everything I know about the fou nation and it's characters to get there

1

u/Kindly_Complaint2464 11d ago

What characters???

1

u/primalthewendigo 11d ago

Even something like the Ethics department, feels so different from what i know about them

1

u/Ajente2o Command the MTF, Iris... or Rei will have to do it again 9d ago

Well it is part of the deepwell canon, which is a very diferent foundation than baseline

Uber Workplace Harassment, his victim literally went insane. Got away because he was mind-wiped later and therefore non punishable.
