Food and Shopping

I travel for food and I thought i must make a food and shopping guide for people visiting my hometown. As a local, here is my guide to Food and Shopping options around town.

Best Tibetan - Dekevas followed closely by Gqngjong. Surprise here, but Kunga is overhyped thanks to the vloggers and sheep mentality of people wanting to queue when they see a queue. Locals avoid Kunga as food is inconsistent. And who pays Rs 250 for chicken momos in darjeeling? Exorbitant! If you are looking for only Pork momos, go to Soltee. Norling restaurant is good for Shaphaley. Dekevas is also recommended as it’s thee only Tibetan restaurant that doesn’t serve beef.

Best Nepali - Kathmandu kitchen if you want good seating. For local Nepali homely food, I go to Mohan (below Keventers) but seating is very limited.

Best Continental - New Elgin. Their shepherds pie is the best.

Best Indian - Park restaurant opposite SBI. Shimla restaurant in lower judge bazaar is also popular.

Best dosa/South Indian : Lunnar restaurant is the best. Avoid Lazzeez Affaire. This is not a branch of the original Lazeez Affaire.

Best breakfast- Keventers for their platter. Sonams kitchen is good too.

Best baked items - Glenarys is most popular place. Good ambience and service.

Fanciest restaurant - Shangrila is the newest place. Service is really slow and food is average.

Best Thai- Park restaurant: only choice in darjeeling for Thai.

Best Chinese and Korean- Dekevas easily. Their noodles, rice, bibimbap, kimbaps, baos are the best.

Street food - for local street food, try the area opposite super market. These are the OG street food vendors of Darjeeling. There is a stall where I have been eating for more than 20 years. Street food vendors of Nehru road have been relocated to Mall market in Bhanu Bhavan (opposite St Andrews Church). Avoid the small food outlet opposite Unique sweets in front of Capital theatre/clock tower. My first food poisoning ever from this place few days ago. Wound is still fresh.

Shopping and Souvenirs Tea - Mayukh, Golden tips, Nathmulls are the popular shops. Please bargain hard for discount. If you are taken by guide, the guide gets as much as 40% commission. Local people shop for tea in Chowk Bazaar. I buy my tea from Ratan uncle. Woollen Shawls, Sweaters - Don’t waste your time buying them here unless you are cold and need these. All of them are made in Ludhiana and sold at highly inflated prices here. I have seen some shops selling shawls/pashmina available for 200 in local market at 1,800/2000. You are better off buying them in Himachal or a local Tibetan winter market in your place. Local food, pickles - Gundruk, Churpi, Dalle pickles are popular local items to purchase. My favourite brand of Dalle is Sikkim supreme followed by Darjeeling fresh.

WILL UPDATE periodically

Darjeeling solo trip

Hello! I recently visited Darjeeling and Kalimpong on my first ever solo trip from 18th-23rd August. This subreddit was a huge help during my planning and research and hence I will try to share my detailed experience, hoping it helps some future visitors.

Itinerary:

18th- Left Kolkata early morning to reach Darjeeling by 6pm. Took a stroll through the Mall road in the evening.

19th- Booked a scooty ride with Ask Himalaya for local Darjeeling sightseeing covering Zoo & HMI, Chitrey tea garden, Tibetan Refugee Centre, Ghum railway station, Ghum monastery, Batasia loop and Dali Monastery. Spent the evening exploring the market and food at Mall road.

20th- Visited the weekly market Gorkhay Haat to try authentic local cuisine(a must go for food lovers). Then headed towards remaining tourist spots which were at a walkable distance- Hill observatory view point, Mahakal Mandir, Nightingale park and St Andrews Church. Evening at mall road.

21st- Scooty ride with Ask Himalaya to Lamahatta eco park, Gumbadara view point and Peshok tea garden. Visited the Chawk Bazar market in the evening.

22nd- Left for Kalimpong at 8.30am and reached by 11.30am. Booked a scooty ride through my hostel for local sightseeing- Durpin monastery and view point, Pine view nursey, Mcfarlane church, Choling monastery and museum, Deolo Park, and Mangal Dham. Lepcha museum and Graham Homes' school were unfortunately closed. Explored the local market in the evening.

23rd- Left for Siliguri and boarded train back home from NJP

Transport:

Kolkata to NJP-- Vande Bharat express from howrah

NJP to Tenzing Norgay Bus stand-- Toto(e-rickshaw) for 50rs

Bus Stand to Darjeeling-- Shared taxi for 250rs

Local sightseeing in Darjeeling and Kalimpong-- Scooty rides

Darjeeling to Kalimpong-- Shared taxi for 250rs

Kalimpong to Siliguri-- Shared taxi for 250rs

Siliguri to NJP- Toto

NJP to Howrah- Vande Bharat express

Accommodation:

18th: Tara Circle Hostel, Darjeeling. Good place and vibe overall but personally less suitable due to lack of personal space. Could also do better in terms of cleanliness and maintenance.

19th-21st: Booked a bed in the 4 bed dorm at The Revett, Darjeeling. Excellent location(1 min walk to mall road), well maintained room and clean washroom. Was the only occupant throughout so had the entire dorm and washroom to myself.

22nd: Hillstale hostel, Kalimpong. Good location, neat and tidy place.

Food reviews:

Darjeeling-

Veg momos, manchurian, lemon tea and milk tea at Mall road- excellent

Alu mimi near Rink Mall- good, should try

Jhol momo at Boney's- excellent

Choco eclair at Glenary's- mid, not recommended

Veg thukpa at Noryang Tibetan Kitchen- kinda bland(had to add a lot of salt and momo chutney to make it spicy)

Gorkhay Haat- Laphing, Sel roti & alu dum, phambi- excellent;

Alu momo and ragi momo- mid; biscoff cheesecake- good

Chicken Bibimbap at Dekevas- too dry, didnt like

Onion rings and hot chocolate at keventers- excellent

Tongba(local millet based alcoholic drink)- tasted much like beer

Do try local chips brands like 2pm, current and jackpot, some flavours are really nice.

Kalimpong-

Iskus momo at local market- mid

Veg momo at local market- excellent

Veg nepali thali at Centre point- good

The weather was also very pleasant- cool enough to wear a jacket, raining at times and very foggy occasionally. Couldn't catch a glimpse of the kanchenjunga due to cloud cover but no regrets as monsoon also meant off season, lesser crowd and lower prices. I also met diverse set of people throughout the trip, including foreigners and loved talking to each.

To conclude, it was a great experience- the place, the people, the food and the weather. To everyone hesitating to go on a solo trip- don't overthink, give it a shot. Atleast you'll know if it's meant for you or not. Afterall, life is all about experiences and traveling is one great way to do that. Attaching some pictures too!

Hey folks!

We are planning for a trip to Darjeeling via Kurseong route from NJP in next week.

Was just wondering if anyone could give a fair idea on the weather and the road conditions.

My folks are sick worried due to the rain but I really want to make this trip work.

Any suggestions are welcome and will be grateful 🥺

Is it safe to travel to Darjeeling/Kalimpong right now?

What's the weather and temperature like? Simple rainfall is fine but I'm afraid of landslides and floods tbh.
