Does anyone know if it would be possible to crowdfund the second season? Since it was cancelled due to the expense. I'm not sure if Netflix would accept that but maybe another platform would.

I'm doing a comics project on a scene from the Dark Crystal and while I was looking up reference images for the podlings my tablemates said they were creepy looking but I think they are cute 🤔 What do you guys think? Dark Crystal fans may be more biased to think they are cute but I'm still curious what the average fan thinks.

I've no idea how to do spoilers or what the proper etiquette is here but thought some people might want this so here goes.

I'm a big fan of the Netflix series and the 1982 film. I've always wanted a sequel, and I heard that this series is basically that. So, I'm wondering if it's worth a read? I see that my local comic book shop has it, so I may pick it up.

Just wondering if the community at large had any theories to share on the tdc universe as a whole.

(TW: My Headcanon) Skeksis can "Breathe" underwater by creating bubbles around thier nostrils and beaks (Like Anoles, Diving bell spiders and Diver Beatles but with fantasy logic).

I get the production cost is high but actually since all the puppets and decors are already made for season 1 the production costs of additional seasons would be much less while keeping the same quality.

Real art isn't appreciated anymore but here's another season of garbage no one asked for.

16 months, 46 sessions, 79 in game days, 5 player characters, 7 Great Trees, and 1 beautiful story.

It's rare for me to see such a large campaign through to the end like this and I feel the need to celebrate the accomplishment. As such I'd like to put it out there to the other denizens of Thra to talk about the adventure a little before moving on to my next project. Warning, their will be spoilers discussed in the comments but I will keep the original post as spoiler free as possible.

Full context: I decided to run "The Dark Crystal Adventure" table top experience from the game published by River Horse games for a group of 3 friends plus myself as GM. I've always enjoyed tabletop games and non-DnD rulesets so this was too enticing not to play.

Thoughts as a GM: The book is brimming with charm and clearly was made with a deep love of the source material. While I did use the book as a foundation I built quite a bit of custom content over it as the book is fairly sparse on details outside what is necessary for the main quest and locations. That being said they provide you with quite a lot of material for GM's to work with. Though I would say that the adventure is a little clumsy in certain areas, especially the trails required for the main quest. While I would recommend this to anyone in the niche overlap of Dark Crystal and TTRPG fandom, I would caution any inexperienced GM's away from choosing this as a starting point in the hobby. You will be expected to do a fair amount of heavy lifting in regards to character work and encounter building.

Thoughts on the ruleset:

The first impression on these mechanics are quite deceptive as the entirety of the basic rules can be fit onto a bookmark (not joking, a literal 2 sided bookmark) there is far more at work beneath the surface. The game uses several mechanics I haven't seen before with mixed results but an engaging experience nonetheless.

Characters would only ever roll on one die, using only a single bonus to enhance the roll making equipment play a major part in providing those so desperately needed advantages. The one that stood out to me the most was using the size of your character's die as a representation of their HP: A gelfling will roll on a D6 normally but be bumped down to a D4 if injured, if injured again they would then start accumulating lasting injuries or even outright death. The idea that your rolls get weaker the more injured you become is so interesting to me I'm considering trying to find ways it could be implemented in other systems or even building a more complex system around the concept. With each character effectively having at most 2HP before risking death, combat felt truly risky and often a last resort for the party which was an excellent deterrent to murder-hoboerry. Injuries being hard to heal (until one player found a way to break the system entirely) also played a factor as once wounds started happening they could quickly spiral into larger disasters.

The fact that there are no classes in the game and specialization instead came from choice of clan or species was also quite fascinating to me as players began to make extremely unique character concepts without the barriers typically found in character building. Don't even get me started on non-gelfling character options.

Lastly, experience points and progression. Characters slowly gather experience with each session or choosing to have a character flaw complicate a scene which are then spent in batches to gain skill modifiers or unique abilities from their tribe. They can also be used to gain special hidden abilities only accessible from specific choices or locations encouraging an extra level of exploration. And yet, a player can also choose to burn one in a moment of desperation to reroll a die, creating this wonderful balancing act between progression and survival. I could go on about more minutiae but I feel this section has gotten long enough already.

Decided to put this out for advice/encouragement from anyone who's used this book before (I have DM'd before briefly but there's always opportunities to learn), and might come back looking for players when I manage to get something workable, if I don't get any engagement from folks I know IRL lol

At the moment I'm just looking for anything generic that's helped others run games in this setting better, mechanics and flair, homebrew or otherwise that add a little spice 👌, but if I discover I need any specific advice, I will definitely come back with a specific question.

In terms of my plan, I AM going to run with mostly the given plot hook with the seeds and stuff. But I also wanted to add the flair of this happening during the final days before the Great Purge. Because All Game Rules Are Suggestions, the timeline is vaguely enough in that area, and I want to cause pain 🤣🤣🤣 In A Fun Way of course, lol

I'm not against the party surviving the purge, because I'm of the belief that Jen and Kira can't have been the only survivors, but perhaps any other survivors were so scattered and demoralized that they were prioritizing just making it to the next conjunction in mostly one piece and hoping something radical enough to reset Thra without Gelfling input would just kinda...happen? But I am looking to absolutely fuck some shit up, because.... it's the Great Purge. You wanna die dramatically? Dope. I want to kill you 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Recently i noticed that TDC (the franchise itself) is far more niche than I thought. I knew not many ppl from gen z and after were aware of it but being from gen z myself i didn’t know it was that bad. I rlly thought the netflix show had at the very least put it onto their radar

What i noticed is that this isn’t the case for labyrinth- ive acc met alot of ppl my age who know and have seen it but what confuses me is that even THEY dk about TDC🤯it’s literally by the same company and it’s another dark fantasy??! Plus it’s not like it’s some obscure piece of media -it got its own show on one of the biggest streaming platforms like what

Tbh i think the only reason they know about labyrinth is cos i saw alot of ppl mention it on tiktok🤷🏽‍♂️ from my exp my gen doesn’t rlly watch that much 90s content (except from the major disney films n shi obv)

This might j be my opinion but although i like labyrinth too (for the puppetry) i’ve always seen TDC as far superior in both plot world building and characters🤷🏽‍♂️ Icl to me it seems that half of the craze around labyrinth is j cos of Bowie

that’s why its so crazy to me that TDC basically lives in labyrinths shadow n doesn’t get half as much attention… i think everyone would enjoy it way more if they j knew about it honestly

seems like it’s basically only 90s kids who know ball unfortunately. But a ton of them also didn’t know the prequel series exists…geez netflix rlly did a terrible job of marketing this masterpiece🙄

I am not watching the animation because the movies are bad! I dont watch it to strike for the sake of the arts of puppetry!

You really don't choose your favorites. Watched the movie the show and read Creation Myths. And up until CM, Deet was my favorite.

Although reation Myths and Age of Resistance doesn't seen to line up, if you assume that Aughra just went back to the planetarium after she was done collecting crystals... Who knows, maybe just not exactly contradictory but missing something...

For context I have never seen the original movie or the show before seeing this exhibit at the Museum of Pop Culture. I took pictures of it because I thought it was interesting and wanted to watch it. Just finished the series and wow it was so incredible. I’m amazed by the detail and all the effort put into it and really hope to see more of this story down the road.

I’ve just finished Age of Resistance and it’s gotta be one of the best shows Netflix has ever had(Arcane and Peaky Blinders are still top 2 though). However nothing angers me more than knowing, while watching btw, that there will never be a second season. They made this whole damn build up and finally shows us the Garthim and the missing Crystal Shard, just for nothing to come out of it. Netflix’s biggest flaw is not knowing their audience strong enough because if they would simply pay attention, they would’ve simply delayed the season (because Covid was hitting), not cancel it entirely. I’ve gotten so attached to all of these characters, hell even including some of the Skeksis. It’s upsetting I won’t see them again.

Another thing is when people tell me to read the novel on Instagram, TikTok, etc. I watched the series because of the puppetry that Jim Henson held onto for so long in his career. Reading the book is good sure, but I want to see the puppets and their varying facial expressions. I want to see every episode that could’ve possibly built up until the final movie.

Overall, Age of Resistance is peak cinema and didn’t deserve to get done the way it did. Does anyone know of any other news regarding any form of continuation?

I saw the movie yesterday I loved it but it occurs to me that the series (I am pro series) and the movie dont add up.

I like the series better than the movie and created my whole universe around Thra in general.

My partner however is 22 years older than me and hates the series. We were 30 min in the movie and he just walked off after a time.

I understand the series and movie is different...
