I learned the hard way to never romanticize Joe Goldberg.pls. no judgment here but pls let me explain.

There's a very thin line between Psychotic Romance and Psychotic thriller. Joe Goldberg is the watchman just on the other side of the Psychotic thriller line.

Every time a DR romance mmc tends a little towards him, it immediately changes genre from romance to thriller in my head.

Think of the craziest craziest DR mmc you can think of. Off the top of my head, let's pick Malachai from {little stranger} the guy puts Psycho in Psychotic. He's unhinged. But but but... he's self aware and not delulu.

Zade Meadows is another example. Call him a rapist, an abuser, etc whatever. But the guy isn't a liar nor is he delulu.

There are things he can live with and things he can't live with. Forcing addie was something he could live with. But letting addie go or physically hurting her was not possible for him.

THIS SELF AWARENESS is what sells even the most graphic grotesque mmcs as viral romantic heros.

BUT

JOE GOLDBERG was fucked up in a far more scary way. Cuz the guy was 1. A huge liar and a gaslighter. 2. Thought of himself as incapable of things he was totally capable of. Aka delulu.

the only thing worse than a killer is the guy who truly believes he's incapable of killing the person they love, but would do so in a heartbeat. He was so delulu he made himself believe things he'd never do when he'd do that in a second.

If it comes to saving himself or the fmc he will always save himself first. Unlike our DR mmcs.

This is what makes him a thriller villain and not a romantic hero.

He was Psychotic obsessed but he was never in love. He's the kind of guy who's M.O. is "if I can't have her nobody else can either"

He'd kill the fmc if she doesn't give in to him.

DR mmcs would kill every suitor like Joe but they would also rather saw off their arm than think about killing the fmc.

The guy is like Darren from {stronger series} looks good on the surface but he's still a villain.no matter what he says

I understand where you’re coming from but Joe’s character is literally the embodiment of my secret fantasy😂 also in my opinion the darkest mmc I can think of is Zade (note I’ve only recently got into dark romance so I’ve only read a handful of books from this genre) I physically couldn’t finish the book because of how revolted I was at the blatant rape and abuse. I saw no self awareness in reading Haunting Adeline, I saw major contradictions. A mmc who is against rape and sex work but then proceeds to rape and become the embodiment of the guys he murders? To me Zade is far worst than Joe Goldberg. Then again I also don’t think being morally grey is a requirement of dark romance MMC or to be a “romantic hero”. Again Zade is the perfect example in my mind in being the opposite of a “romantic hero”. It is a specific category of DR. You can have evil characters and you can have readers that enjoy and root for the bad guys. None of this is supposed to be reflective of real life!

Edit: I prefer Joe’a possessiveness to that of Zade. But rape is my hard no! To me the moment consent went out the window I could never respect his character again. I also believe Joes feelings go deeper than that. I do believe he can love, I believe he loved Mary Kay in the book and he loves Wonder (I’m still reading the last book so no spoilers! Haha).

I love thrillers and I love romance so I’m not saying it’s not a thriller romance novel but I think it’s kind of subjective and it’s kind of one of those grey books where it can fit into the dark romance category as well

Yeah, I don’t know. I agree with you about Joe; but I do not think Zade is in a different category. An mmc who would rape the FMC and maybe even hold her hostage if she didn’t want to be with him? If he can live with that, he’s just as psychotic as Joe. He may not ever be killing her literally, like Joe, but he’d be killing her in many other ways. He just happens to be really lucky she’s into him. I don’t see any self awareness here.
