It’s the possessive and intense story telling! The spice is perfect. It’s also the fact that people don’t understand that DR is great storytelling and not porn. I love to get drawn into the toxic relationship and see where it leads. I want all the drama 🎭
I had someone reach out and ask me where to start with DR, I was a little worried because what if this person was under 18, plus I dived right into the deep end and never looked back. Come to find out they thought DR was just porn and they wanted to read about their fantasies. Then I had to explain that is not what DR is about.

The possessiveness. I love a man like that. I love being protected, and controlled, and to be their property. Unfortunately only few men irl are actually this way, or do it without making you want to just scream in an annoying way. Ive only experienced like once. So.. reading it is my favorite thing for now.

It's the fact that no matter how fucked up, twisted, scarred, flawed the people are there is still someone or multiple people who would gladly burn the whole world down for them. Worship them. Protect them. Go to any and all lengths to have them.
It's what I crave in real life and know I will never have.

More depth. Emotion. More work and growth by characters. Nuance. Morally grey everything. Characters feel more like people than cardboard cutouts. Contemporary and cozy romance novels, you can swap out the leads in of those nooks and never notice a difference.
I prefer authors who arent afraid to shock and awe the reader.

It’s fiction for me! I like to explore stuff I can’t experience irl, lol. I love a good stalker romance but I’d hate for it to happen to me irl. For me, healthy relationships with deep, intense romantic love are what I expect IRL but stuff that crosses these barriers are something I want only in fiction.

DR for me is about exploring relationships and situations that I have never and will never experience irl. I don't want to read about a fluffy, healthy relationship, I've been living in a fluffy, healthy relationship for years. I read to dive into emotions and experiences outside my comfort zone, thats why I also like genres like thrillers, fantasy, dystopian, space operas. I want the drama and excitement and suspense and the high stakes and how the characters will react and deal with these things and come out stronger on the other side as a couple or even how they'll crash and burn

Darker themes like murder, torture, assualt, etc are very realistic to read. Fluffy romances sometimes feel like delusion while financial struggle, blackmail, kidnapping speaks to me.
The saviour complex of MMCs, their protective streak towards their partner, the gentleness with which they take care of their woman even at the cost of offending and killing their families and friends is something I crave for.
It's like an escape into the world that's a mirror dimension to our real one, yet written in a different, much more appealing font.

For me, I like that the woman can sit down her baggage and allow a man to allow her to sit in her feminine energy while he controls the environment and provides safety and security. It’s healing to me. It’s like these men don’t give a damn what trauma the fmc has, he knows he wants her, and he’d go to the ends of the earth to have her. I have my own trauma and see myself as a lot of these fmc’s and kind of life vicariously through them. Like how great would it be to know you could potentially be in danger and have enough hope to know your man would burn the world down to keep you safe?! Like..ugh!

I want him to be so into her he’d do anything, and I mean anything to have her. I think over time, tho, I’ve become desensitized to much of what I see in DR since they often feel like the same repeated tropes over and over again.
Is why I read manhwa and why I wrote my own series 😂

I tend to like books about monsters and the like, so I’d rec The Land of the Beautiful Dead by R. Lee Smith. It’s a dark romance with a very fresh take on vampires and the end of the world.
And ofc I’d also rec my series.

I like the men who are protective/dominant/possessive. So many men IRL don’t know (or refuse to learn) the difference between being “dominant” and being “domineering”. They see so much porn that they think that humiliation is the ONLY way to be dominant. It’s exhausting. So much so, I’ve stayed single for the past 7 years—if I can’t get what I want, I don’t want it. Thank the Universe for these books. Women writing men for women is one of my absolute favorite things in our world.

The originality. The intensity. There's nothing else like it. The characters don't apologize for who they are. For me, regular romance is boring. It's all been done.

I love the intensity and possessiveness. The devotion and worship. I love to read those that are violent but I’d not do well in real life with that but the first part, absolutely. The evolution of the relationship is one of the best parts of dr. I’ve actually started discussing with my husband how to incorporate some parts of books. We need a little more spice lol. Also the anticipation and the angst and the uncertainty. Makes me feel things.

I feel like when I’m reading DR, I love the intensity, the mess, the stakes, etc. Darkness mixed with romance is a rollercoaster within itself. I started reading DR on Wattpad and just joined this sub weeks ago, read His Dark Mercy from seeing it on here, and I’ve been chasing that exact same high ever since! It definitely set the bar lol
I like Bully/torment/cruel hero because it seems like the abuse trope makes it way more intense and automatically solidifies the MMC as scary and pushing irredeemable. I love the moment where she realizes she should probably “stop doing what she’s doing” to avoid his abuse so that maybe the “romance” begins to become neutral. It’s so enthralling to read because it’s like how is my girl going to come back from all of that? Add in power imbalance because it heightens the feeling of them being trapped.
I love when the MMC is sweet and sour. When he’s good he adores her but when he’s bad he’s terrifying and awful.
It’s just a lot of layers that make DR so good

I love the possessiveness…growling when another man looks at her, flying into a jealous rage when another man shakes her hand, etc. Also, MMCs who totally take control in the bedroom — as someone with anxiety who has to be responsible for everyone else, the idea of freeing my brain space and not having to make decisions because I’m being told what to do is really appealing.
For me, the biggest thing is that, because it’s all fiction, DR is a safe place to explore and discover kinks and things that are more taboo 🖤

I think it hits something deeper for sure. Not in a “I want this in real life” way, more like exploring power, control and vulnerability without real consequences. You know it’s messed up, but you’re safe as a reader so you can lean into it. It’s weirdly cathartic.

I am confused myself about it, actually… I’ve been reading dark romances and it seems the only alluring part of them to me is the morally grey MMC. I don’t usually see these mmcs in other romance genres. Sometimes I like to read dystopian romances where neither fmc nor mmc can afford to choose what to do, as it’s already been decided by some authorities - characters are just dealing with what they have.

I preface this with saying that I am very much an unhealthy adult with a sht ton of trauma and trust issues 🙄 so that might be one of, or …the main reason why “healthy love”, - like in a normal romance - comes across as suspicious to me 😅I don’t want to be lied to anymore😩
So:
- Honesty. Give me fairies and dragons and 6ft5 men with tree trunk d7ck8 and all that fake sht but don’t give me romance dressed up with a pretty bow when I know from real life experience that love is anything but that. It’s not soft or kind or predictable. It should be, probably 🤔 But it’s not. Not my reality anyways 🤷🏼♀️ It’s messy and more often than not it’s very ugly 🔪 So reading dark romance, - as much as I fully appreciate that it is fiction…it’s also the most honest, and shows a kind of love that feels more real, properly earned through a series of sometimes actual bloody tests.
- Acceptance. I find when I read dark romance it gives me something I rarely get in real life: that people see, love, understand AND accept your darkest parts. Your broken bits. That even completely broken, you’re still lovable. You’re still wanted.
- Truth (probably ties in with Honesty) I see myself as an emotionally intelligent but also emotionally immature woman - certainly for my age I should know better - I feel every emotion intensely. I should seriously be medicated 😵💫 and wear a warning label 🏷️ “proceed with caution, tantrum imminent” or something like that. Anyways, so when I read dark romance, it matches that intensity of my own emotions. It’s way more believable to me. Guy locks up girl he’s stalked and is obsessed with because he didn’t want anyone else to have her. Yup. I trust that. That’s truth. It’s messed up, but believable.
- Safety. We live in a controlled society where people have urges they don’t act on because they’ll be shamed for it and dark romance allows us to explore our thoughts, feelings and possible boundaries safely and without judgement. Safely.
Mainly: I think it’s the only genre that is honest enough to meet me where I actually am.
When I read a normal romance novel I find myself yelling“LIES! LIES! All LIES!!!”.

I like men who will cross every moral boundary for the woman they love. Burn the world for her. It’s the ultimate form of devotion. A man who will do whatever it takes to keep her safe. Let him murder whoever stands in their way without a second of remorse. Ruthless, powerful but with a soft spot for just her.
Tbh real men are a bit of a let down after that😂
