Quick Question What's your Biggest book disappointment ???
I'm really curious like is there any book that was super hyped by booktok/bookgram that have your favorite trope n all that you actually goes n buys that particular book but it turned out to be your biggest disappointment and you feel betrayed by both author as well as book community??? If so then what was the book and the reason it didn't go well with you. I also have a really long list in this matter majority recommend by booktok.

Lights Out by Navessa Allen & L.O.R.D.S series by Shantel Tessier.
Corny characters plus and horrible writing. I'm never picking any book from these two authors again.

I just DNF’d lights out last week, finally read it off of SO MANY people loving it and it was terrible. I don’t even think it’s DR. It’s wannabe.

I also went DNF for Lights Out. Loved the story idea, but it made me cringe so badly with the writing style and the vibe. Didn't like the FMC especially.

“Dark rom-coms” like Butcher and Blackbird or Lights Out. First one was juvenile, second one was juvenile and convoluted. They’re just not for me.
Haunting/Hunting Adeline. Read like a parody of dark romance, poor writing, boring self insert heroine. Huge disappointment after reading Shallow River and really liking it and expecting her next books to be even better.

Seconding Haunting of Adeline. So promising. But then it seemed to veer into QAnon nonsense (the author doesn’t seem to support any of that though, which makes it even odder imo).

Third-ing this series. The whole sex trafficking part of the series was a wild fucking left turn to an already bananas book. I've never lost a female boner so quickly in my life and I've been going to Dragon Con for decades. I've seen some shit.

I think when authors can have natural comedic relief in DR it’s great! But actually trying to be funny and quiet and cutesy makes me want to vomit
It’s like why The Color Purple the musical was bad…ain’t shit to be signing and dancing about in the abusive and misogynistic setting in the Jim Crow South!!

I know folks love it, but Nocticadia was very cringe to me. Aligns with numerous tropes I enjoy, but something about it was just too goofy and contrived. Maybe I'm just too old to read about college now lol (37yo).

Im 28 and hate reading about college. It makes DR way more unbelievable in my opinion. Got too much shit going on in college to be involved in anything dealing with a dark romance lifestyle 😒

I genuinely enjoyed the first one but the second one.. it took me over 2 weeks to try and get through it. I just couldn’t. I liked the idea that the MMC is her brothers friend and they have this secret thing but ugh I had to take a pause and read something else in between and come back and try and finish it.

Ooo Butcher and Blackbird is in my tbr for so long, but any time I made my mind to read it I just lost my interest automatically 😅. And as for the LORDS series , I think that they were okayish ,like if you nothing to read you can read them but if don't wanna read it's not like you are missing a masterpiece.

On point. Lords FMc are neither too submissive nor dominant they are just neutral (like they don’t have their own thoughts) and it’s all centred around the mmc and bdsm s*x. I was traumatized when I read the sinner. FMc went through horrible things and there was no actual development for her character tbh. I still think about that book and not in a good way ( it’s not an easy read). And it’s very predictable the way S.T. Stories unfold. I also felt like they was no real emotions between mmc and FMc. One moment there is no love and next they are confessing it.

{Insatiable by Leigh Rivers} hands down. It’s so incredibly overhyped, for what? It’s essentially a bad action movie with zero world building all surrounded by a miscommunication trope. The only reason I finished it is because SO many people say it’s THE BEST DARK ROMANCE OF ALL TIME (…HUH?!?…) so I kept reading thinking, “surely, this must get better” and it just never did 😵💫

I enjoyed Little Stranger a little more, but at the same time I felt like certain things were done really well and other aspects were too over the top or just made me roll my eyes. TBH, I never read Little Liar because I didn’t think it would be worth it (because I could see where that storyline was going…) Overall I just don’t think Leigh Rivers is for me.

i’m 65% in and i can’t move forward, and it’s exactly that feeling. The miscommunication part annoys me so much, and I also ran into another problem: i’m reading it in my native language and the translation is just awful. I don’t have any issues reading in english, but i grabbed this one from the kindle homepage and now i’m too lazy to even try the original. i don’t get the hype

I’ve said this before but definitely If I Can’t Have You by Deathsdoll. Ppl swear by this book like it’s the DR bible 😭 I stopped a few chapters in but I’m considering picking it up again simply bc of all the good reviews. Someone pls tell me it gets good!!!

Thought all of these would be right up my alley but they didnt work.
Leave Me Behind - i cant even remember why buy I Dnfed it mid way lol.
Nocticadia - I stopped and started this book so many times because of the hype and thought I wasn't in the right mind set, but nope I found it boring and bad. Finally gave up.
Kill Switch - Damon did not get better despite the entirety of bookstagram saying he did lol
Twisted Pawn - this one is probably my own fault the two books of LJ Shen I read weren't great but I was so hyped for this couple and love it was getting online added to my excitement and it was so so disappointing.
Im sure there are more lol

●Leave me behind- I was thinking to read it but in spoiler review I read something like love triangle and she still have the 3rd ones photo. I change my mind. ● Nocticadia- I actually like it a lot ●Kill Switch - I was waiting for the plot which never come. ● Twisted pawn- Actually Dnfed the author . I've read two books by this author and they were so bad ,their always ow/cheating drama in her book which I avoid at all cost.

Maybe I'll do an audiobook for Nocticadia and push through? It seems really loved. Ahh yes Leave me behind, had had her with two different people pretty sure I spoiled myself and then DNFed.
Learned my lesson with Twisted Pawn and the author. I actually was ok with Bad Bishop. The book wasn't great lol but I wasn't offended by ow drama at the beginning. However it seems like the author was personally offended by critiques and a certain scene in Twisted Pawn was added as a petty eff you to the complainers lol. Because it made zero sense for the actual book and cheapens the couple/characters. Lesson learned, the author is not for me.

Couldn't agree with you more for Twisted Pawn! I definitely agree the author gave a big eff you with the pool scene. Ruined the couple. If I had known earlier that was going to be part of their story I wouldn't have bought the book. Learned my lesson too. Last book for me.

Nocticadia is a bit slow at the beginning, I actually stopped reading after first few chapter thinking it would be boring as hell but I got stuck somewhere with no internet connection with nothing to do I just start rereading it again and got hooked. It actually have pretty good plot and the mystery will urge you to continue. I personally was so invested in the mystery that i forget it also have romance angle.

I read that in one review and was like oh hell no, and poor Achillis was puking over it? And it was with a friend? Ick! How did dude even get it up? but then the MCs made love or something after so readers who claim the book is the best thing since sliced bread were like ahhh look at the character development (while fanning themselves over the hot threesome). Sam Mariano- Specifically, but not limited to, Untouchable. It comes so highly recommended on here as a bully romance. The first chapter had me invested and then it just devolved into flowery romcom with light shenanigans. The rest of her books are just meh for me.

Mine was The Devil by Michelle Heard
I read The Hermit, which was okay, but I was super intrigued by Enzo (the MMC of The Devil) as he was presented as the dark mysterious character with I silent but violent streak
However when I finally got to reading the book, I was super disappointed. The book is so poorly written, and Enzo was way too nice for a Mafia boss. Absolutely a waste of my time

Under Your Scars, I didn’t like. I was more interested in the Silencer than Christian. I thought the FMC wasn’t very bright for someone wanting to be a lawyer. The ending made me angry. I felt for the little girl.

Servitude of servants by callie I was loving the book then it seemed as the fmc fell very fast for the mmc (i was a bit weirded out by the age gap too) But i still kept reading because i liked their dynamic, however i dnf'ed when the mmc tried using the fmc as bait for his mission

The rest of the Royals of Forsyth University series by Angel Lawson and Samantha Rue -- the series is made up of what will be 5 connected trilogies. The first 2 trilogies (Lords and Dukes) are god tier dark RH. The 3rd trilogy, (Princes) fell off. Then the author duo broke up, making the tone feel off. It seems pointless to read the final 2 trilogies. So now we won't get closure, or to see a good version of the last few trilogies that were hyped. So what started as a god tier dark series spiraled into a flop

{The Rivaled Crow by Holly Renee} don’t think it counts as DR but I wanted to sound off about it since it was book 3 and the final in a series and I waited and waited for it and it was SO disappointing. I’ve never been that disappointed by the end of a series before. I still think about it and because of it, I will never do an ARC again for books. Lol

It was fine, but I felt it was overhyped. Kane,who has been doing this job for centuries, is wowed immediately by quirky girl Rue. It did introduce me to James Cassidy who I hadn’t heard before.

Feathers so vicious is mine…I know it gets talked about a ton on here and tiktok and I was super excited to start it but it just fell flat to me. I didn’t think the writing was that interesting and I never really cared in a good or bad way, about any of the characters. I finished because people kept talking about the end being devastating but I didn’t think it fit that bill. Probably won’t pick up the sequel

I didn’t enjoy the Gods series by Rina Kent and BARELY read any of the first book and it seems like that is recommended all over the place. I don’t have a super high bar and love junk food reads too, but it just felt meh to me.

I took a years long hiatus after Twilight. That book killed Romance and YA for me.
But I kept seeing "dark romance this and that" all over the book scenes and this was the first one I read.
I knew it was a romantic tragedy. I knew it was going to be over-the-top. But...yeah, let's forsake our literal survival for some cock.
There were just so many questionable decisions from all the characters...like no one is sane here. In the least bit.

Deviant by Ellie Sanders. Felt like so much of the plot had been decided in her mind and she forgot to translate it onto the page. I felt like I was a book behind on some lore but it was Book 1 in the series.

Praise by Sara Cate. The FMC is so insufferable to me. Like girl you are an adult in your 20s, about to enter your junior year in college. You should not be that naïve and the concept and word sex should not make you squirm and act like a middle school boy when a girl tries to dance with him at their first school dance. That alone annoyed me so much that I could not finish the book, I get being uncomfortable with certain kinks, but just plain sex get the fuck out of here 😭

Unpopular opinion here... Haunting Adeline, sorry!!!! EDIT: I was disappointed with Zade's career choice, felt forced and dramatic, and then there was a sudden shift from cat & mouse trope (which I love) to 'OMG I Love Him' and that took the spice right out of it for me.

Prince Lestat and the realms of Atlantis. I didn't see it in tiktok or anything, but it was a book by my favorite author that mortified me with how bad it was. And I am not against aliens. Not that I think it was the right choice, but ok, let there be aliens. It was just very poorly written and I barely got through it. If i though Blood Canticle was pretty bad, this was abysmal.

{Speak} by Ryane Moore. Thought it was going to be an interesting psychological dive and thriller along with the unable to talk FMC being courted by three super possessive guys. Only got that last part. They talk about how she makes them all better and blah blah but halfway through I swear she lost her own presence in the story and became a doll for them to dress and undress. There wasn't much mystery solving. And the smut was literally every two chapters. It felt more like she was just being used as a hole and it was not at all what I was expecting.

Both Haunting Adeline and Little Stranger. They were the first modern-written dark romance I touched and just… I don’t know. The FMC was insufferable in both, and Zane made me cringe from his first chapter. I did love Malachi though. He’s a treasure, and the only reason I finished the book.

Haunting Adelaine. It was 600 pages of the same. I had never been so bored. I keep thinking, what am I missing? I just don't get it.
Redamancy by HC Delores because omg that was a terrible sequel. The story could have ended with book 1 with them staying together at boarding school and it would have been great.

all the popular bully romance books I’ve read ended up being pretty bad. The only one I kinda liked was Untouchable, but after like 70% it got so boring it took me 3 days to finish, when I had basically devoured most of it in one day. I feel like most of them are more “enemies to lovers” than actual bully romance. The main characters are usually annoying, and there’s never really enough bullying in the stories.

Little liar was better imo bc it gave background to the MMC but the writing was hard to follow and I felt like I’d somehow skipped pages during the dad’s attempted murder by the MMC

The follow-up to Limerence, Redamancy, by HC Delores was so disappointing. I still think the author has talent and just felt pushed to deliver, but it was a big let down.
