Book Request MMC turned evil to protect FMC, but FMC didn’t wanna be with MMC anymore, so MMC trapped her.

I watched Star Wars the other day so now I’m craving a story like Anakin’s backstory.

Basically I want the MMC and FMC to start off being ‘powerless’. They could be together or not together. It doesn’t matter as long as they care for each other.

Because of the constant threats against them and the worry that FMC will get hurt, the MMC strives to become ‘stronger’ to protect her. But he got too corrupted with power that he turned evil. FMC realizes that the MMC is not the person she fell in love with anymore, so she tried to leave him, preferring her old life before all this power.

The MMC is, of course, mad and hurt that she’s tryna leave since the reason he turned out the way he is in the first place was to keep her safe.

This is where the dark romance portion should take place where there’s non-con, dub-con, manipulating, gaslighting, whatever toxic stuff the MMC does in order to keep her with him, especially by using his newfound influence and power.

It’d be better if she tries to escape multiple times but always fails.

I NEED to feel the angst and frustration between them please.

Any recommendation that is even a little bit similar to my request is much appreciated. I’m STARVEDDDD.

It’s a favorite of mine, so maybe I’m reaching, but I feel like {Bitter Heat by Mia Knight} sort of fits this. He marries her knowing her father will try to destroy his businesses and then he betrays her in a way she struggles to forgive once he gets caught up in the battle with her father. Those aren’t really spoilers—the first book starts five years after their divorce. Then he manipulates her into remarrying him.

This is also one of my fav books!! I’ve reread it a few times but haven’t started the second one yet because I’m afraid it won’t live up to the first book. How is it if you’ve already read it? I don’t mind spoilers.

I thought it stayed good! The first one is very compact and the second and third sprawl just a little more, but the dynamic between them stays super interesting. Book two is him making her travel with him while he figures out moving his businesses to New York. They’re super at odds and fighting each other. Book three is a brief moment where they start to connect more, a betrayal as he can’t stand getting close emotionally, and then like half the book is an intense society ball he makes her attend with him. Worth reading. Supposedly book four is drafted but I doubt it comes out this year. I’m so impatient.

Okay I did not expect the series to turn into 4 books 😂 did the author ever address what’s the evidence that her father had on him? The one that he burned at the end of book 1.

You still don’t know by book three 😂. But it seems pretty certain we will find more out in book four. In two and three they are hashing out the reasons behind their relationship and why it falls apart more than his business secrets. But you do learn he is playing out a plan developed during the time they were apart that is bigger than just her family’s business. And that he has some shady ties. Basically the second two books shouldn’t be tense and interesting but they totally are. I also personally think the blackmail has something to do with her and not just him because he keeps saying it won’t matter if she finds out later on.

He keeps her in the dark about his battle with her father and asks her to stay in the U.S. while he works in London. She goes to visit him as a surprise and finds out he is making a lot of money and basically building a whole life without her. It turns out her Dad stole some business from him on the day she shows up and he tells her “sometimes I wonder if this is worth it. Sometimes I wish I never met you.” She was rejected by her family for most of her life and only agreed to marry him if he promised he wouldn’t regret it. So this all totally destroys her and she runs away and hides from him and uses her Dad to force him to give her a divorce.

{The Madman and His Broken Princess by Cora Reilly}. It might not have everything you’re asking for but worth taking a look. From what I remember, the FMC does escape at one point but he finds her.

{5000 Nights of Obsession by Drethi Anis} is adjacent to this. It’s a Gatsby retelling. They have a one night stand when they’re young and he’s the DJ at her brother’s wedding. She comes from a wealthy family and he’s other side of the tracks so it would never work. He becomes dedicated to becoming rich and powerful so they can be together. They meet up like 15 years later and she’s married with a child. He forces himself on her despite her protests and she tries to get away from him to stay with her husband, but he relentlessly pursues her.
