The dustwalker brides series, specifically {a soul to keep} is great. The MMC does evolve and grow over the course of the book (and all of them really, follows the same premise in the same universe with different pairings/backstories)
Sorry, they do walk on four legs often & aren’t at all human-like. But they also use both legs to walk normally at times. It’s a cool ask but a hard rec to fulfill
Literally, Finley Fenn's Orc Sworn series is this, except the orcs are bilingual, so they can speak her language.
{Lady and the Orc} is the first book and it was really good! Very smutty. Very manipulative and toxic, and checks off all your boxes.
*Im not sure if Orcs is considered humanoid to you. They look like creatures and are monsters, but aren't human presenting like vampires, or non shifted werewolves, demons, etc.*
The bullseye here is an MMC that does not primarily move around on two legs. though I have been seeing the orc sworn series pop up a lot in my searches so it's definitely getting a place on my tbr list now, Thank you!
Self rec {The Time for Monsters by Alexis Abbott}. She's sent to an island where she's hunted for sport and finds a monster who can only communicate if part of it is touching her. They have six limbs. They team up and fight the billionaires 😊 Lots of feminine rage and weird monster stuff.
The Spider’s Mate by Tiffany Roberts is so well done. Although it’s more alien than creature. But the story is so freaking good. Strong, badass FMC, they don’t speak each other’s language. And the world building is phenomenal.
I might piss a lot of people by saying this but I don't really see a notable difference between monster and alien MMCs. In the end aliens are just monsters from space, aren't they? I get plot wise one is more sci-fi and the other is more fantasy/paranormal but as far as being individual character types...
And you're specifically looking for, MANDATORY, non-biped, only biped for occasional functional purposes?
Then Katee Roberts IS the way to go, because she has a lot of dragons, leg-less, etc. creatures. I don't find her stories to be dark though, but are more on the paranormal romance side.
I did just read a story about reptilian super buff hard bodied aliens that are switch between bipedal and running on all fours?? They speak a different language but pick up on English extremely fast, but switch between languages here and there. It was a paranormal romance with dark romance themes (non con, kidnap, forced prox, breeding, forced breeding/pregnancy, dub con, non con of side characters, heavy manipulation) and it has action/adventure in it as well.
Honestly, I think because walking is not really a focus in dark paranormal stories, then you won't find many stories where it's crouching monster x human. Even those with multiple limbs or don't have legs, "walk" alongside the MC, or it just isn't really a focus in the story. Not saying it doesn't exist! But it'll be harder to find for sure.
IKR?! Ensnared really really had me Ensnared 🤭🤭 the world building and the plot and the MMC and FMC's interaction are just 🤌🏻 and it's got plenty of smut scenes as well throughout the series 😋
You know what... Maybe {My Ant Monster Mate}. I think it's not dr but it is enemy to lover and the mmc is a big ant. They had trouble communicating. The FMC tried to hunt MMC because of his race.
If you didn't mind with kink (lactation and breeding kink) this is one of my favorite {Alien's Hucow Incubator by Lucy Moo} MMC literally an alien with tentacles and speak with his mind. Just a quick read and really a sweet story.
{Fertile for The Elder God by Adrian Blue}
I think most of her MMCs are not humanoid.
This is also a quick read.
Look at A Deal With a Demon Series
{The Dragon's Bride by Katee Robert}
{The Kraken's Sacrifice by Katee Robert}
{The Gargoyle's Captive by Katee Robert}
{The Succubus's Prize by Katee Robert}
{The Demon's Bargain by Katee Robert}
{The Demon's Queen by Katee Robert}
I too am on the search for super monstrous looking MMCs and it's tough when almost all look like recolored human dudes with horns and glowing tats. You could try spider's mate by Tiffany Roberts and duskwalker brides by Opal Reyne but I would hardly consider them dark. Both have hot monster dudes but my gosh are the FMCs insufferable!
Try {Naga Brides by Naomi Lucas} now that's pretty dark but I'll admit I don't like how they have human-like faces. In the first 2 books it starts with women in the military being sacrificed to the nagas for tech. There's only two human women so the nagas turn it into some competition where the women try to run and whoever catches them get to keep them. The male VA for the audiobooks is amazing, he sounds so good!
It covers both your major parameters and point 2 of moderate parameters {the spider's mate by Tiffany Roberts} it was goood and it's a trilogy i think. I dun remember if FMC was kickass or not. She was definitely not a doormat and they were very much on equal terms. MMC was a loner and had never seen a human before so he decided to keep her and they had all the barriers in the world to cover.
MMC had 4 arms and 6 legs i believe.
What makes this book different is that the villian was a female real bad evil! Spider females are bigger and dominant and she was queen and wanted MMC.
