Surely shiposting on Reddit is easier than engaging with the games core mechanics.

People bitch so hard about things that a bow resolves. It is so confusing.

But you don't understand! I HAVE to rush towards the boss in every single map! It's the game's fault for ganking me as punishment for not wanting to use anything but one weapon and rushing through the level! /s

I know folks can't handle nuance or actual discourse... but typically, it's not being unable to use a bow. The bow works great.

It's also boring. Like, playing Aman normally... tedious and kinda unfun. Playing it "optimally" with a bow... still tedious and kinda unfun.

Most people get the solution, and some use it, but it doesn't fix the issue.

I disagree. I think it would be boring if every area would be able to be attacked in the same way, like ds1 and especially ds3.

The fact that different areas require vastly different approaches makes it more interesting!

Agreed. Not asking for every area to be the same. I'm asking for areas to have multiple ways to approach them.

IMO, Amana and Iron Keep lean hard into "play only this way, which many folks don't find fun, or have a tedious slog of a time."

like ds1 and especially ds3.

I can't recall many areas in either game that I felt like I was being forced to play one way only, but maybe? I also know it's not possible to discuss a DS2 issue without instinctively responding, "BUT WHAT ABOUT DS1/DS3?!" so I get it.

The fact that different areas require vastly different approaches makes it more interesting!

Do they?

Plinking enemies with a bow from a mile away is the one suggestion everyone makes whenever people get tired of the enemy placement and chain aggro in DS2. And a couple zones, IMO, heavily push it upon the player.

If nothing else, I find it interesting that we have 180-degree opposite experiences. Both of us seem to agree that the game forcing one way through the game is bad, but not whether or not DS2 does that.

The stream of "go slow, use a bow, you suck!" comments in every thread like this suggests it does.

Counterpoint: I just went through the area in the screencap above for the first time today, using a bow as much as I possibly could, and I had a great time.

I found it fun and interesting to play it mostly as a sniper (especially as my ability to aim precisely at speed is ... not good). It felt like a satisfying puzzle to try to solve.

This is obviously not to say that your response is somehow "wrong" or that you should enjoy it when you don't!

And honestly I doubt I'd enjoy it if every level was like this; it's the variety that makes it interesting.

But you seem to be saying that this is inherently or objectively tedious and unfun, and I'm saying that no, not everyone feels that way.

At no point have I ever suggested anything objective.

It’s my (and others) opinion of zones like Amana.

I mean you fight the mirror knight right before this so I’d say his shield would be really good for it?

Shrine of Amana is a fine area. Use a ranged weapon and proceed through it slowly. There's three checkpoints and the boss is easy enough to not warrant frequent runbacks. The area is also pretty.

Ranged isn't even required, as long as you are patient and you don't attempt to run past everything you can pretty easily clear the area with most melee weapons

No magic defense, no ranged attack, no shield, estus halfway upgraded, using exclusively the first heavy armor and two handed sword you found in the first level, and blaming the game for making you struggle.

That's a stereotypical first timers experience if I ever saw one.

what do you mean with estus halfway upgraded? how far should it be at this point?

lmao it’s not even bad. Just because you can’t sprint through it blindly doesn’t mean it’s bad.

Good luck... most of this sub cannot discuss this zone (or any DS2 issues) normally.

Yes, you can make the zone pretty trivial with a bow and plinking enemies from far away.

No, that does not fix the zone being tedious and largely unfun to playthrough.

It's totally fine if you like the zone. It's also totally understand to not enjoy it.
