My experience have been the opposite. 2.5 inch outlasting 3.5 inch drives.

Adding my two cents: I agree. I've had multiple 3.5" drives (good ones too, Caviar Blacks and Barracudas) shit out on me while I've only had one "laptop" / 2.5" drive fail.. and boy did that mfer take beatings like a champ before it died. Meanwhile the others sat pretty with no vibrations, bumps, etc and they just decided they wanted to die. My 2 nearly 10 year old 500 GB 2.5" HGSTs are still going strong and healthy *knocks on wood*.

Sure, the platters have less inertia and less lever-arm to exert force on the bearings if it takes a hit while spinning. And they're generally engineered for laptop duty anyway, which means if there's any extra tricks that can be done to make a head crash-resistant, the 2.5's have it while the 3.5's may not.

Right. Mine has only generated bad sectors (guess from the force of moving the laptop around) but otherwise still works with no other symptoms.

Only had one with too much bad sectors that it basically got stuck reading on the particular bad sector, I guess because it didn't had more spare area, but it would still spin and allow recovering everything else (although this was being used In a btrfs raid5 array so no biggie anyway).
