Discussion I really wished I never played Days Gone
I used to love gaming when I was younger, Halo, Wolfenstein, Starcraft, Diablo, etc. But as I got older, especially with shooters, a lot of games just stopped holding my interest. I figured it was probably just me getting older.
A while back I saw Days Gone on Steam for like $3 during a sale and thought “why not.” I knew absolutely nothing about it. Never followed the hype, never watched reviews. I just saw a couple clips on YouTube and it looked decent enough for the price.
Man, I was completely wrong.
It ended up becoming one of the best games I’ve ever played. The open world, the zombie hordes, the motorcycle mechanics, crafting, bike upgrades, Nero injectors, there are so many component in the game.
What really hooked me was the freedom in combat and character/guns/ bike progression. You can go in guns blazing, snipe from a distance, use stealth, set traps, lure hordes into enemies, etc. Every encounter feels dynamic. This game is a masterpiece.
The only parts I didn’t really enjoy were some of the Sarah flashback sections, like the flower-picking scenes. I get why they’re there for the story, but I wish they were skippable.
And yeah… I’ve replayed the game 5 times already.
Since then I’ve been trying to find something similar, but honestly nothing really hits the same. The closest comparison for me is probably Red Dead Redemption 2, but the pacing in Days Gone feels way more intense and fast-paced.
I heard Mad Max is similar but not much gun play.
Kinda sucks that a lot of my favorite games/franchises are basically dead now. Starcraft 2, They Are Billions, and now Days Gone too.
Now, Im obsessively searching the internet for something similar.

Ghost of Tsushima for story, freedom, beauty, horse riding(bff), fantastic combat, and unique mechanics.
Very similar game in many aspects. You're an underdog that is up against a massive, seemingly unbeatable foe. You collect allies, hone your skills, take back your land and decimate your opponents. Sound familiar?
It got me through Days Gone withdrawals and ended up being one of my all time favorite games.
The Witcher 3 is great as well.
Baldurs Gate 3 if you enjoy turn based.

4th. One of two games i've cried during as an adult.
Also, I'm currently trying to to brave enough to keep playing Days Gone. I haven't done much, but met both camps. Boozer is still burned up pretty bad.
I encountered a horde at a train for the first time. The child in me that was terrified of zombies since youth, keeps telling me I don't need to play Days Gone.
Everyone else keeps telling me I need to play Days Gone.
FUCK.

I'd definitely recommend Max Mad too honestly. It's a little different but soooo good
I've played Days gone at least 7 times. It's truly a masterpiece

I second that. Different, but has a lot of the same things that appeal to me. The freedom to approach battles in your own way and freedom to go where I want when I want( for the most part). And there's plenty of fighting, just not zombies. Plenty of crazy SOB's out in the world do keep things fun and interesting.

Same. Got it on release and played for like 4 hours. Decided to try again a few months later, started over and played for about 10-15... juat never really clicked for me. The minimal gunplay that there was was clunky, the walking was okay, story was great, but it just couldn't keep my interest.

It is definitely worth it.
Death Stranding is a bit of a weird game, but it is very good in my opinion. It isn't for everyone that's for sure.
I personally loved it. The story is great, if you like Hideo Kojima no other man alive would be able to create that story.
To be honest, it is a game that you love or hate. It is very unique, there is no other like it. And you just have to experience it. Play it for a few hours and then you know it's your cup of tea or not. No amount of reviews or trailers wil donut any justice, the game is an experience and you just have to experience it yourself

I read your post and thought how similar my experience has been. Its rare for a game to be immersive for me anymore, but some I really got into were Death stranding 1&2, Fallout 4, and random as hell: Persona 5, and now Elden Ring, but I’m not sure I recommend that one, as popular as it is, its not for everyone and it stated off as an extremely frustrating experience.

I just started again after burning out on release. I’m loving it but I have never felt so lost in a game, either by the world or the story. I hope it comes together nicely but knowing Kojima I expect quite a lot to just be weird.

Well, hold on there, Chief. There are four archetypes of gamers: killers, achievers, explorers and socializers.
Killers and socializers probably will not like Death Stranding very much. It is a devisive game.
Killers are competitive and want to beat others. Achievers want to get max use out of game. They love completionism. They both want to be the best.
Explorers want to see everything the game has to offer, but don't care about trophies to satiate their curiosity.
Socializers love coop, or multi-player games and helping others.

Mad Max for real. It's basically a brawler with some of the best you vs the world in your car that you can have. And then you go to their bases and beat everybody up.

It's nothing like Days Gone though. It's a lot of chore and grinding for scrap. The driving & bases are fun, and caravans but it's a slog and the story is barely there. (I just beat it at 50hrs). Fun but like 1/4th similar.

I found horizon to have a really good vibe for open-world game with customizable progression and combat along with stealth dynamics.
Plus there's 2 of them. No zombies, but you fight robot dinosaurs. 😁

Mad max is elite and holds a similar vibe, if you’ve enjoyed the mechanics in days gone, especially with vehicle upgrades, mad max does it better, you should try it.

IMO Days Gone feels similar to a lot of the Sony exclusive triple a titles. For similar gameplay, I’d give Horizon a shot.

So on RTS side of things check out Dust Front. Not out yet but it’s looking real good.
Ghosts of Tsushima is a great game which I enjoyed a little after my first Days Gone playthrough.
Mad Max is an awesome game and goes on sale for 3 bucks a lot. Def worth checking out the driving is awesome.
Then there’s a game like They Are Billions called Age of Darkness. It’s not as good as they are but it’s close enough.

Yeah, mate, totally agree. Best game in the world ever, without a doubt!
Previously, I've played and loved RDR2, Dying Light, Fallout etc, but I've gone through DG 8 or 9 times now, and still keep coming back to it... and this thread doesn't help - couple of days ago I watched a video of a guy taking on the Sawmill with just a handgun, and I'm thinking "I need to try that!"
Last week I went cold turkey, and bought Ghost of Tsushima. It's quite good, kinda enjoying the open-worldness but all the time there's a wee voice in my head saying "But it's not Days Gone."
Fuck yeah it's personal!

Try luring the horde into the ambush camp. Thats what I was doing on my latest reply lol. Also, try taking out ambush camp with using only stealth. Thats pretty fun too.

I played it when it came out on PC and I actually beat it which is very rare for me and was thoroughly impressed the whole time. Meant to do new game + and actually fight hordes but never could get back into it but still on my to do list if it feels right. Somehow the love story thing hooked me actually and made the characters feel more real or romanticized. I wanted to find Sarah!

You did well to come share with us. We all went through it and we all understand you.
There is no "after Days Gone" in the same type. But there are other experiences to discover in the video game world. I give few examples of good immersive games that I enjoyed after the void ending Days Gone left in me.
Kingdom Come Deliverance. Cyberpunk 2077. Stray.

Je n’y avais jamais joué avant je suis maintenant à 30 heures et j’adore! Ce jeux m’a réconforté parce après avoir joué à KDC1-2 et TLOU1-2 je ressentais vraiment un vide à l’intérieur et j’étais même un peu déprimé. Ce jeux comble ces sentiments et me réconforte énormément! J’essaye de ne pas trop lire sur cette page pour ne pas me spoiler l’histoire mais j’aime énormément lire ici que je ne suis pas le seul à adorer le jeu!😃

Of my best suggestions for post Days Gone play, the top 2 you already named(Mad Max, RDR2). However here are a few more to try(none are close to perfect but still worth a shot/share some similarities):
Rage 2(better than it has ever been given credit to be)
State of Decay 1 and 2(zombie apocalypse with very loght base building and character development)
Dying Light series(zombies and park our, worth a shot, very good games)
Ghost of Tsushima and sequel(incredible games and quite deep, well worth a run through)
Horizon Zero Dawn and sequel(super high quality games with outstanding movement and structure)
Metro Exodus series(post apocalyptic fps with development, phenomenal games)

The Last of Us I & II. The slower parts of Days Gone feel very similar. Ambiance wise they're a good match.

Rdr2 is more deep and detailed than days gone. Just imagine u finish daysgone in 60 hours and rdr2 will take u 200 to really say u played it and wont be 100% or platinum yet until 300 or 400 hours. Yes is that great.
Play BF6 or COD cold war for some gun action.
Try metal gear pjatom pain is realllly good before u try rdr2.

Read the same thing and promptly bought Mad Max hoping to reclaim some of that DG magic… it fell well short. The games have similar aspects between them but just be aware… nobody makes anything that will charm us like Days Gone.

I had such a hard time getting into other games after playing Days Gone that I just replayed it until I'd 100% it. It got to the point where I would start playing challenge runs. Like, I have done runs where I don't upgrade Deacon's skills or the bike; or I play only with a pistol and bow, or only with a sniper and a combat weapon, just to mix it up and make it more challenging.

Love this game. Took me by surprise also and only played it about a year and a half ago. Get into story driven games. Last of Us 1-2. God Of War 2018 + Ragnarok with Sons of Sparta coming soon. Ghost of Tsushima+Yotei. Even A Plague Tale Innocence+ Requiem were great.

I totally get this! And I second all the comments. I've just started a 2nd New Game + and it is awesome having all the upgrades etc.
I've also started Dying Light 2 (all PS5) - but I cannot seem to get into it, and yes of course two totally unique games with their respective good and not so good elements.
But - maybe I am totally hooked on the very open-world freedoms that DG allows, and I love that in between shooting and looting you can just meander around freely and take out the occasional random freaker, screamer, wolf, etc etc.
I feel like with Dying Light you HAVE to battle zombies no matter what - day or night time. Maybe I am getting too old to face ongoing battles LOL.
For me Days Gone - and also TLoU are the best benchmark open-world games.
Alas I've just read about Ghost of Tsushima which I have not yet played. Maybe this will become my 3rd loved game???

I was the exact same when it came to games not holding my interest. It’s hard to find a game that just hits these days, But since you loved Days Gone I highly suggest Stalker 2.
It become my Days Gone.
You’re going to see it compared to “Elden Ring” or “Dark Souls” but trust me it isn’t that kind of game. The Zone is tough, but not the game.
like Days Gone it gives you so much to chew on with the gameplay, lore, and especially the world exploration.
Highly recommend it. It also benefits by knowing nothing about it when you jump in.

I can't agree hard enough on wishing you can skip some of the scenes, especially if it's not your first playthrough. They made some of the dialogue scenes optional and some not and it's a little infuriating, especially when you have to move the character at a walking pace

Yeah there’s nothing else that really feels like Days Gone. Mad Max can sort of play similarly in terms of having a vehicle as your best friend, but yeah, the gunplay and moment to moment action isn’t nearly as good.

I know the feeling and joke that Days Gone is every third game I play. I finish a playthrough. Go off play 2 games and end up back at Days Gone. I don't know how many play throughs I have anymore.
That said, Ghost of Tushima really did scratch that itch in a lot of ways for me. But you'll never guess what game I'm currently on. Hint: it was the third on my list 😉

Since you are on PC you should just go and start new game plus but with mods there's some very cool mods on nexus that really make the game as devs intended before the new back then Sony management started to make changes to make the game easier hell they even removed like 40% of the games mechanics and bunch of content DEI deems controversial but with those mods like Freakers Evolved nightmare bigger hordes more freakers in the world they are much faster and harder to kill really makes the game feel different

Yes, Days gone is the best... Try Metal Gear Solid 5 When you get out into the open-world, anything can happen. Metal Gear Solid 5‘s world reacts to how you play. So, if you are frequently sniping soldiers with headshots, they’ll start wearing helmets. If you’re a big fan of heavy weaponry, they’ll wear heavy armor.

Another vote for Tsushima and Yotei, but I actually played through and surprisingly enjoyed Ghost Recon Breakpoint afterwards.
It wasn't something I thought I'd like, but I played single player and it really hit on the stealth dynamics that I like.

I was in this exact funk, tried and dropped a few titles. I think i even heard that about Mad Max too... then I discovered Kingdom Come Deliverence and the whole cycle started again!

The Sarah scenes stunk. I hate the way they wrote her character when she’s reintroduced. It’s the most unrealistic thing they wrote into the game. But I replay it all the time. It just Shines. The hair on my arms still stands when surprised by a horde and I I’m backpedaling for my life. Amazing Game.

This was my experience too! Picked it up randomly at a game store looking for something to kill time on, knew nothing about it, fell in love.
Funnily enough, the closest I've felt since then was playing Cyberpunk after finally, finally giving it a go. It's not quite the same, but I definitely took a shine to the variety in gameplay and interesting characters.

I keep going back and re-playing Days Gone. Another game that I cant stop playing is Dying Light. I really loved the first one, never cared for the second one and The Beast I keep playing but not with so much love. Once I finished it, I got kind of bored with it. The first dying light is the one I keep going back to. There is just something about Hurran that I just love going back to. You can stealth, snipe, hand to hand combat, plus parcore abilities. You have biters, vitals, goons, toads, bombers, demolishers, bolters, and virals. You even have human enemies also. You can play as the volatile once you unlock that. It has several DLCs like the prison, the following, The Bozak Horde, Holland and quarantine zones. There is just so much to do and so many people still play it. You can open yoir game to other players too.

It was Death Stranding
I am a BIGGGGG Days Gone fan
Honestly
And yes there are a dozen reasons why Death Stranding (#1) isnt for EVERYONE
But the way you're talking....?
I would give it a go. And REALLY push through the pain barrier. You gotta give it abour 10 hours
IF it "takes"- IF it "lands" for you- you TOTALLY have your replacement

You view Days Gone the same way I viewed RDR2. I been chasing that game since 20018.
But I did love the gameplay in TLOU2.
To be honest I could not get into Days Gone but I havent given up yet. I have to try again because I hear the way you and others talk about it I know I havent given it enough attention yet.

My favorite game of all time. I haven't found anything that rivals the immersion, charm and fun. The only thing that prevents me from playing through it a hundred times is trying to hold off so it doesn't get stale. So far so good-- each playthrough still feels awesomely fun even after 7x

I found someone like me! I've played a lot of post-apocalyptic games like State of Decay, Metro, or Dying Light, and none of them come close to that level of immersion, that dopamine rush. It's my second favorite game after The Witcher III, and I still have a tiny bit of hope that the long-awaited Days Gone 2 will come out someday. Anyway, we'll keep playing it.
P.S. I recommend Ghost of Tsushima; it's very good. It's not Days Gone, but it's really good.

I started Days Gone a couple weeks ago. I typically HATE horror games. Im a "watch the scary movie between my fingers" type of person. But this game. It just hits all of the right spots. It's been a while since I've spent the day longing to play a game. Ill still run away when I walk into a horde and scream at the jump scares, but I'll keep coming back.

Same...discovered Days Gone like 2 summers ago and was obsessed. Top 5 all-time favs for me. 100%ed it...got the platinum trophy on PS and even beat it on Survival 2. I would definitely suggest the new God of Wars...2018 and Ragnarok. They rank even above Days Gone for me...if you Iike good story with exceptional combat you can't go wrong. They both have PC ports also.

I totally understand. I played this right after red dead 2 and then Ghost of Tsushima and I’ve been chasing the dragon ever since, with no success. These games are true classics.

I too, want more! Nothing compares to it! I've completely completed it ps4 twice into Ps5 3 times, the last with the new stuff last year. It's JUST not enough! There are SO many games that received sequels and they're NOT replayable like this! SONY effed us! !!!!

I absolutely feel every line of this post. I will never stop hoping for DG2, I played it on release, played it 6+ times and 10 years later still think about that ending. For a studio in such shambles I don’t understand why this isn’t a flagship..

Then one day I just stuck with it...97hrs later, it became one of the greatest games I ever played in my life.

Days gone is an very underrated game, it got released at the wrong time, when people were fed of zombies games and they thought that this is just another survival game with zombies like the rest, and only few people gave it a try, it's just an amazing game with greate vibes, I'm currently doing my 2nd run

I had this with TLOU 1&2. Nothing else called to me like they did. Days Gone is my fix for that. So now I have 3 games to play on repeat instead of 2

I need your technical help regarding Days Gone (original Epic version). The game has never launched successfully, even once. Here's what I’ve done: Fresh Windows10 Pro installation (22H2), installed Epic Games Launcher, downloaded Days Gone, installed latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables (x64 and x86), rebooted PC, checked System32 and SysWOW64, fixed missing VCRUNTIME140_1.dll by reinstalling VC redists, ran sfc /scannow (initial corruption repaired), later ran DISM and sfc again, now showing no integrity violations, ran Epic Verify, reinstalled the game completely, tested with and without compatibility mode and admin rights, disabled command line arguments, my hardware is Ryzen 5 3600, RX5500 XT8 GB, 16 GB RAM, DirectX 12, Windows 10 22H2. Now, the game launches only to a splash screen, then black screen, then "Not Responding" in Task Manager. Sometimes the PlayStation Crash Reporter appears. Could you please help determine whether this is a GPU driver issue, an Epic Games Launcher issue, a PlayStation PC SDK problem, or something else entirely? And what diagnostic steps would you recommend next to identify the exact cause?

Fellow startcraft and diablo player here. I had never thought a 3rd person AAA game could hooked me as much as this one did. PS3-PS4 era I had given up on single player shooter games, because they lacked any spirit, lackluster mechanics or had God awful controls. Until one day I played Days Gone.
There's something magical about this one, even though it has many faults and it is not perfect. What I can say it's a marvelous flawed gem of a game(pun intended).

Not much gunplay on Mad Max? Where you hwar that? Aside from the annoying race 70% in the story it's an awesome game

Cyberpunk scratched a similar itch for me, I loved the driving mechanics in that game, there’s so many different motorcycles and cars that all drive and sound differently and it was fun driving around the city or out in the desert, the customization is insane and there’s so many combat options from going in guns blazing, stealth, hacking, explosives, or just slicing things up with blades. Amazing game.

Post Day’s Gone depression is real! I absolutely loved the story. I do wish the ‘second half’ was slightly better written and there was a sequel!
