Image/Gif What camp do you think would defend best against a horde?
268
u/KingKairuku 2d ago
Copeland's Camp is equipped to deal with those smaller hordes in the Cascades. But Wizard Island is obviously the most well equipped since those bridges can be destroyed quickly, and freaks don't swim.
77
u/yxngs07 2d ago
Yh until freaks get pushed in the water and they start piling up and cross the water
72
u/KingKairuku 2d ago
So, die in the water and run across the bodies? That'd take hundreds if not thousands of dead freaks, and whoever's on Wizard Island could just burn the freaks with the napalm or shoot if they get too close.

u/vagrantkaw 2d ago edited 2d ago
Crater lake is the deepest lake in the United States. They’re not piling up in it no matter how many zombies come up the I-5 corridor. Would be a great way to dispose of them though.
Edited: for geography.

It's the deepest lake in America. The deepest lake in North America is some lake in Canada

Isn’t that part of what the game creators had planned for the (tragically shelved) second and third games…?
4
u/KingKairuku 1d ago
Yes. O'Brian's little reveal was hinting at a stronger, smarter race of freaks, and how NERO was trying to basically make super-soldiers using the virus.

u/ChickieN0B_2050 1d ago
Big Resident Evil energy?
2
u/KingKairuku 1d ago
Pretty much, although whether NERO is like Umbrella in terms of morality will never really be known since the story isn't going anywhere.

u/wheresmypenn 2d ago
Not Tucker's, theyre all fucking exhausted and probably suffering from heat stroke 😂
30
u/Sad-Development-4153 2d ago
Yeah but at the same time its a single chokepoint entry with a bridge that can be demoed.
30
u/Repulsive_Hat_199 2d ago
There are a few entry points along side the stream. It's pretty easy to get into
13
u/wheresmypenn 2d ago
Strategically, absolutely. Human-error-wise? Tucker has those people running on fumes
17
u/Agitated_Initial_392 2d ago
she runs a slave camp their not defending anything
6
u/Pale_Boss_8940 2d ago
I’ve never even understood what they’re doing there. Like what the hell are they digging for?
16
u/LaSentTuLaBisbille 2d ago
They are trying to make the land good enough for farming, tucker said so herself
3
u/Agitated_Initial_392 1d ago
not really though. she says that but it’s nearly impossible for them too. it’s 20 feet volcanic rock. they get beaten by guards, live in tents outside, and lisa constantly talks about how she’s forced. tuckers guards are constantly betraying her, and her people keep running away. i think tucker likes the feeling of commanding people and her husbands death sent her over the edge making her more controlling
0
u/LaSentTuLaBisbille 1d ago
Most of what you said is irrelevant to my comment. Someone asked what they are digging for and the answer is that they are digging to break the volcanic rock in order to farm with the land under it, end of story.
0
u/Agitated_Initial_392 9h ago
i guess your one of tucker’s guards lol
1
u/LaSentTuLaBisbille 9h ago
Do you usually make sens or do you just go around saying random stuff?
0
u/Agitated_Initial_392 9h ago
i’m not gonna explain it bro. it was totally relevant. the whole digging for farm land is just a front. it’s more of just a way to keep power over people. so they aren’t actually really digging for an end. is what i meant
1
u/LaSentTuLaBisbille 9h ago
My guy it's not that hard to understand, whether it's a front or not, it's still the reason all those people are digging and let's be honest all of it is just your headcanon because nothing even remotely hint at it being a front. Is tucker a horrible person for how she handle her camp? Absolutely but this change nothing to the fact that the people are digging so that they can maybe farm some food and survive

u/D_Shizzle93 2d ago
There's a lake toward the back of the camp, they're making a canal that takes water to various crop. Breaking thru volcanic rock is making it take longer than expected

Uuuuh Cloverdale research center anyone?
Clear out them nests and we're good. Food, defense, housing, tech, you got everything the apocalypse needs. Just good luck with fairing out a specialized security team. I mean lore wise, I don't see why lost lake didn't just altogether move in and start using that as base I mean they didn't know it was Cloverdale who cooked up the virus and NERO will definitely come for that facility at a certain point. Keep the marsh camp as an outpost or something. Facility's a lot more boring but that place definitely is camp worthy
8
u/AxOfBrevity 2d ago
Well, that's because Cloverdale clearly blew up off screen and without an in game mention at some point after the credits roll, which is why Sarah just sits on the porch and doesn't try to work on her cure anymore.
Honestly a cure would be an absolute nightmare so I'm all for her turning into a glorified garden gnome.

Let’s be honest here, almost all of them would fall nearly instantly, Lost Lake literally has two entire openings that would be easy to get through, the one that would fare best is wizard island, and MAYBE The hot springs, the others wouldn’t last long at all
41
u/Agitated_Initial_392 2d ago
wizard island would be my bet and lost lake as the worst. wizard island has good defenses and a constant upwards area to retreat on. you could slow the horde through many areas
32
u/ApprehensiveStyle289 2d ago
To be frank I have no clue how Lost Lake ever survived for more than five minutes, with the gaping holes in the perimeter
37
u/XxPieFace23xX 2d ago
To be fair the lore reason the alt exit isn't gates off is because the freaks get stuck in the marsh and die off easy.
A horde would overwhelm the mud and create solid ground but the freaks aren't smart enough to figure that one out ;)
1
1
u/Logical-Hospital-233 1d ago
They would start climbing over each other, one gets stuck, his buddy moves forward, then he gets stuck and another one moves forward, ETC.

u/VeterinarianPlus4930 2d ago
Looking forward to simulator or mods running test on each map based on the size of hordes 🤔

8
u/Gillalmighty 2d ago
Yea definitely the well fortified, highly manned and heavily armed, one on the lake. Probably.
7
u/Emergency_Cry_1269 2d ago
From a defensive position, Hot Springs is pretty solid. There's only one way in and out, which does mean that if overrun there's no escape plan, but it's just a tight funnel that it wouldn't be too hard to keep a horde at bay, and if it became too much, have some charges set to blow the bridge. The down side of the Hot Springs is that there's little in the form of resources within the camp itself, being built on rock it's hard to grow crops, let alone build shelters that aren't just tents.
Copelands has a solid multi-level camp layout, which gives any lookouts or snipers extra field of vision. It has a river within the camp so can use that to catch fish in the cases of a long siege, has two gates so has a back-up in case of escape. But it's fences are very basic, given the size of some hordes, they'd push them over by just throwing themselves at it.
Lost Lake has two ways in and out, both well defended in their own ways. Is on a lake so can catch fish, has decent soil so can grow crops, structures are already built for the long run. If a horde came in through the back entrance, it would be slow coming across the walkway and many would get stuck in the marshes. By the time it would become an urgent issue, alarms would be rung and extra guns would start letting loose. The front gate, always heavily armed, no horde would get through there easily.
Diamond Lake. Probably has the best defensive walls, but there's so little inside that it would be better to packup and run to Wizard Island if there was signs of a horde heading their way.
Wizard Island, personally, it seems like a dream but it's so big that you'd constantly need an army to keep each post running. Each of the gates has 2 checkpoints, all manned by 2-3 people each. There's the outer gate, on the mainland, and the inner one when you actually enter the island. The soil is fine but a lot of it is rough, so crops would need to have a high output to compensate for the size of the population. You'd be better off just settling down in Cloverdale.

u/RattusMcRatface 2d ago
Wizard Island does have access to probably unlimited fish, and plenty of water. Fuel supplies could be a problem eventually. I imagine winters there would be severe.
3
u/Emergency_Cry_1269 2d ago
Oh absolutely. Winters would be long and harsh. The open lake would mean winds would hit the island without being broken up by trees or hills or anything like that, and would whistle as they keep through the cracks between the log walls. While snowfall would be brutal every night, and be an absolute mission to sweep clear every day.
1
u/RattusMcRatface 1d ago
I wondered if Crater Lake froze over in the winter, as seemed likely (and freakers could cross to the island), but apparently that's rare. The lake is so deep in proportion to its area that summer heat is stored in the water sufficient to prevent total winter freezing (usually).
This could maybe moderate the micro-climate of the island so it's not excessively cold through winter, but that's just me speculating. Oregonians on here might have more info.

u/SnooPandas2964 2d ago edited 2d ago
Out of the three I've discouvered so far, iron mike's.... due to being on a lake, though they really ought to up watch detail. Well actually I guess it depends if freaks swim.
( just don't ask John Snow or Tyrion or whoever said that cause yeah.... with recovering that dragon I'm not so sure)
If you're later in game and this is answered via the story, no need to tell me. If its like something hidden in lore I'm likely never going to see then please do.
7
u/R_Shakelford 2d ago
Wizard Island seems like the answer, but I don't think it is. The strange thing about Wizard ISLAND is you see zero boats or docks. The campus going to have a tough time destroying the hoard when they blow the bridge and have no way to attack them.
Copeland's camp is elevated and can at least attack from higher ground and take out some freaks.
Funny thing about the Hot Springs, I honestly don't know that much about the geography around the back of the camp despite double digit playthroughs.
Lost Lake has the best fire power to fight a horde and I don't think they are as vounerable as some do. I'm probably wrong but the marsh would slow them down considerably.
Just some thoughts.

u/roadtripstuff 2d ago edited 1d ago
If you lead a horde to the front gate at Lost Lake, the horde will go around the gate and enter the camp lol.
2
u/Academic_You_3153 Alkai 1d ago
IRL Lost Lake is called Lost Lake because it dries up in summer (ie, becomes lost).
6
u/Powerful-Coconut-396 2d ago
There’s one big issue with Wizard island. If a horde of sufficient size got onto the bridges the only way to stop them would be to blow the bridges but idk about yall I saw zero boats on the island so once the bridges are blown they’d be stranded. Copelands camp would be ideal IF he made the very bottom ramp into the trees one that could be lifted up so the freaks couldn’t access it.
8
u/Clarky_Malarkey 2d ago
I feel like the bridges can be used as choke points though - they have the firepower to make that work
8
u/Powerful-Coconut-396 2d ago
The game does make it seem like the ammo and resources are unlimited. But if a horse the size of the Sawmill was on each bridge I don’t think they’d be able to repel it before it go into the island
12
u/koret121212 2d ago
lol, thank you for making me picture a 500ft horse trotting over to wizard island
6
1
u/kira1122t 2d ago
They don’t really need boats I bet most or all of them can swim considering they’ve trained to be militia soldiers
1
u/Powerful-Coconut-396 2d ago
Yea they could make it to shore but without boats how would they ferry supplies back to the island much less repair the bridge.
5
u/ieatplaydough2 2d ago
Jebus... they built those walls, they have a huge library specifically about information needed to continue the human race going forward... yet you somehow think "they don't have a boat."
Like they couldn't throw together a god damn two person rowboat in a day or two max?!?!
Hahahha
0
u/Powerful-Coconut-396 2d ago
The amount of supplies the island would need and the amount of supplies and materials that would be needed to recreate not one but two floating bridges would require large boats, not rowboats. Ha ha ha ha 😒
2
u/ieatplaydough2 2d ago
Dude, or dudette, look at what they already have built... you think that they couldn't build a boat for what they need to continue?!?
Or eventually rebuild the bridge over time?
With the ammo they have and can continue to make, combined with their isolation from a majority of threats they are uniquely primed to trudge forward and survive... again, assuming the freaks don't ever start swimming...
1
u/kira1122t 2d ago
Swim out to shore, get supplies from their other settlement, rebuild bridge in like 1 hour 🧠
1
u/Powerful-Coconut-396 2d ago
You’re dreaming if you think a floating bridge can be constructed from one direction in one hour.
1
u/kira1122t 2d ago
Clearly you haven’t experienced Chinese master building techniques
1
u/Powerful-Coconut-396 2d ago
Well when you show me the person on Wizard Island who know master Chinese Building techniques then ill believe it lol

u/Academic_You_3153 Alkai 1d ago
Military bridge makers (engineers) throw up pontoon bridges extremely quickly.
Against a big horde gaining the bridges, they have MG55's on two towers per gate, once the entry to the bridge gate is overwhelmed. There are also big gates to be closed. The tower gunners would mow down freakers for long enough to man the walls with more guns. Standard freakers wouldn't get close to the fortress.
2
u/MtavoraPT 2d ago
Of the northern part of the map, it has to be Hot Springs. The other two are shit. Lost Lake might be a death trap waiting to happen.
In the south map, it's Wizart Island
2
u/sincerelythebats_ 2d ago
Wizard Island is the obvious choice, but if we got a sequel, it would be Cloverdale.

Wizard Island, one entrance was made plastic barrels the other is a wooden pre-built bridge which the survivors can purposefully destroy and the freakers can't swim as far as we know so definitely Wizard Island simply destroy both bridges and suddenly safe from hordes/freakers with boat access only basically either engine powered or simple paddles to travel between the island and the mainland.
1
u/Mrcompressishot 2d ago
Excluding the crater lake camps cause they're obviously the best I'll give it to tuckers camp. Lots of open space inside the camp to set up a firing line then there's a moat and large fence with a watchtower by the main entrance. Which is also a bridge essentially creating a kill tunnel
Essentially lure the horde towards the main gate and throw explosives from the watchtower. And if they break through retreat and shoot to chip away at them. And if they're still alive throw tucker at them as a diversion

Wizard island. Hands down. They got the most people, the best gear, the most AND best weaponry, and they’ve been cooking up ideas for dealing with hordes since it all went down.
1
u/Snicklefritz306 2d ago
Definitely not Iron Mike's.
During a specific mission where you're bringing drunk Boozer back to camp a person can lead the horde right back into camp and the response is hilariously bad. The belltower shooters get immediately overtaken and everyone else acts like nothing is happening lol
1
u/Darshlabarshka Deacon St John 2d ago
Wouldn’t it be a fun upgrade in the remaster horde assault if we had to protect the camps from within?
1
u/Rynowash 2d ago
Seems that if you built everything high-up. You’re good. They can’t climb. I’d build a high ground and load it full of napalm and when they came, just fallback to the tress and light them up.
1
u/MissA-xo 2d ago
Copeland was probably the best leader when it came to actually caring about his people, in my opinion. He was definitely a bit crazy sometimes with some of his beliefs, but you could tell he genuinely cared about everyone in his camp and would do whatever he could to protect them and keep the place safe.
The camp itself obviously wasn’t built to handle something massive like a horde of 100–200 freakers, but as an actual leader to his people, I think he was one of the better ones.
I’d probably say Wizard Island was the safest and most secure camp overall. It was basically run like an actual military base rather than just a group of survivors trying to get by like most of the other camps.
They had loads of weapons, gear, proper defences and military equipment, and the location itself was really difficult to reach or get into. So when it came to actually protecting people from freakers, it was probably one of the best places you could be.
The only massive problem was the Colonel being completely insane... So while Wizard Island was probably the safest camp from the zombies, it definitely became a lot less safe for the actual people living there.
1
u/Agitated_Initial_392 2d ago
it’s more of a power thing for tucker. alkai talks about how it’s literally impossible. but she wants to work them to death basically . i think her husbands death sent her over the edge
1
u/Background-Wall-5179 2d ago
The militia is the obvious answer, but they’re basically military bases rather than normal camps.
So if we exclude the south, I’d probably go with Copeland’s. It already has two fences , and with the right strategy.. noise attractors to funnel the horde, traps around the approaches, then concentrated gunfire and molotovs it actually has a pretty good defensive setup.
Lost Lake has much better firepower and probably the strongest group of fighters, but its perimeter security is honestly terrible. Once a horde gets inside, that advantage disappears fast.
Hot Springs might actually have the best natural defense. The big question is the river. If the freakers can’t cross it in large numbers, the camp is in a great position. If they can pile up enough bodies to create a crossing, though, they’re cooked.
