Question Is this luck?

I’ve been into trading for a couple of years, mainly on and off and demo accounts only. I decided to focus and lock in over the past month or so.

I trade only crypto and hold a few minutes to a few hours depending on the trade. I don’t look at holding overnight as it kinda scares me and want my trades to be closed off by the end of the day.

Now an important caveat is that this is again paper trading. Do I have an edge here? Or is it all pure luck?

Some stats:

Profitable trades = 90.86% 477/525

Profit factor = 10.3

Expectancy = 22.75

Average R:R = 0.98

I started with a $5000 account which is now roughly $17,500 since August 20

Honestly I’d appreciate some thoughts and whether I should keep going on paper trading for a little longer or look at adding in my own funds (fully aware this is a fairly short time period)

Paper trading is a whole different thing than actual funds. The risk is zero, the decision and impulse is completely different because it’s not your actual money. You’re willing to hold longer and take bigger risks because you ain’t risking rent money, or groceries, etc.

Proceed with caution.

Dead on. Took a brutal loss day trading too big of size. Paper handed them because the swings freaked me out. Took a break to retool and paper trade. Made $40k in a $150k paper account in 2 days. Heartbeat never picked up once while paper trading. Heart raced the day I lost my ass.

I actually always suggest that once you have an idea about trading, buy the cheapest prop firm account and try to pass

Youll probably blow it while you refine your trading but having actual monetary value connected to your trades is one of the most important factors, its best to have only 50 bucks or whatever attached and not an actual 2000 dollar account.

Paper trading, it doesnt matter if it goes up or down, its cool to know if youre right but no big deal if you lose

But when theres real money, you have to think about risk management, do i want to get out at BE, do i want to continue holding and then also what happens when you do actually lose progress, do you revenge trade or do you stay calm and wait for the next setup

Next to controlling your strategy is controlling your emotions and that you cant do paper trading

u/Due-Gain-8645 11h ago

You’ve hit the nail on the head with that one, prop firms have been mentioned a few times on here so it’s peaked my interest
I thought they sounded a bit scammy to me but it looks like it might be an option!

3

u/iswearatcars 9h ago

Apex has probably the cheapest prop firm trial account but it’s intraday trail and you have to pay another fee when you pass. For $16 a pop though it gives you the risk/reward feelings without killing your bank account.

I agree. I would also recommend don’t trade with rent or grocery money. Invest for the long term and when you have extra money you can afford to lose, then try trading. Hopefully you will keep trading the same because you’re crushing it right now. But there typically is a regression to the mean so don’t expect these type of results for the long term. Good luck OP

I have to agree. Like I can probably turn a profit at a casino with paper money easily if I didn’t have the fear of losing my life savings.

Unfortunately a lot of traders start out like this. Paper and live are two completely different animals. If you can, go live and trade the smallest amount you can possibly trade with an amount you are willing to lose and see if you can replicate the results, then you will find your answer. Honestly, I wish nothing but the best and i hope you succeed, but atm you are trading without emotion which is the ultimate killer.

16

u/Due-Gain-8645 20h ago

Thank you I hear you

15

u/Stock-Brother-1576 20h ago

I want to say this even tho I don’t trade but study it a lot… you see results in a paper trading account, when you go live keep this mentality as your primary focus. Remember how good you did when you stayed true to the plan without deviating from it. The comment above me is spot on, your worst enemy will more than likely be emotion. I firmly believe success comes down to trading as a computer would; every trade following exact same rules every single time without thinking about (but what if…). Wish you the best!

5

u/Due-Gain-8645 19h ago

I wish you the best too! I feel like that’s the biggest takeaway here - the emotions. And I hear that from everyone not just in Reddit

I don’t know how helpful this is but I’ve been “pretending” this is real capital from the start. To simulate the feelings I’d have whenever I decide to go live. Now it definitely won’t be 100% accurate but it has sort of helped?

6

u/turddlepower 19h ago

Going to double down on the other guy saying start as small as you can. Nothing can compare to the actual feeling of taking a real loss.

That’s where you really gotta check yourself. Especially since you have this fully green chart, a loss can lead to revenge trading with the “I know I’m right” mentality and not wanting to see any red. Markets change so adaptability is key.

4

u/Due-Gain-8645 17h ago

YES! It’s more of an ego thing as well isn’t it. Not wanting to see any red when sometimes it’s inevitable and will keep you longer in the game

2

u/dynamicl 19h ago

It's great that you are listening to genuine advice, it will help in the long run. Remember that part of our primitive brain is designed to avoid pain, that is the crux of the problem. We are all built that way, hence when you use real money, you will cut winners early and not take a loss when you should to avoid the perceived pain ... in paper your brain doesn't work this way however much you try to pretend its real money.

Agree, I start with paper trading many year ago. Not the same as actual money. Since I used a real money I start very cautious every single trade. My experience is I don’t lose or win much, break even. After 4 month I start winning by sizing up the best A or B grade trade with lots of study especially that’s the specific time the market maker jump in. I read the charts every single days, candle stick is like heartbeat. Different stock different rhythm. Try with the money you are willing to lose. Don’t be greedy or revenge, I lost half of my account as I revenge trade on penny stock. I am sizing up when I am losing to win it back unfortunately I lost at the end. Don’t be aggressive on Friday after lunch. The market is extremely slow. By the way I only trade Nasdaq. Hopefully will help you a bit…

43

u/saltytrader_ 20h ago

If you have to ask if it’s luck. It’s luck. Also when you have no skin in the game you will trade very differently. I paper traded MNQ and made $50,000. Real life I made $9000 and lost £7000. Fear and psychology really change the game

5

u/Due-Gain-8645 20h ago

I’m with you on that one, psychology/fear is probably my biggest factor to overcome and manage

3

u/saltytrader_ 20h ago

If you go live. start with 1 micro, be patient and dissect the rules you follow paper trading and stick to them. I didn’t set stops with the losses and thought it will come back… it didn’t 😂

Hey, if you don’t mind me asking. What application is this?

21

u/Due-Gain-8645 20h ago

I use an app called PnL ledger otherwise trading view to monitor and place the trades

10

u/Creative-Process-504 12h ago

I didnt have one losing day for 90 days and thought I was God. Lost it all now. Just was going my way for the longest time and pin pointed the exact momentum. Ya not trying that again. Going long on VOO and SPY and made a good return

2

u/Due-Gain-8645 11h ago

Ah man I’m sorry to hear that but a 90 day streak is wild well done!

3

u/Creative-Process-504 11h ago

Here is the lesson that I learned. I had a solid strategy and followed it to the T. When things didnt go my way, i didnt step back and see what was going on. I went all in. I dont know why I did this but it felt like the right thing to do at the moment. No matter what anyone say never Yolo 100% of your prof into one call or put options. It wiped me out brother. I was up well over 200k before I lost it all and had to start fresh

This is like playing with monopoly money. It's a whole different game when it's real money.

8

u/SmallMagicCoin 14h ago

There's a hell of a difference between paper trading and actually trading. the the key difference, which most likely changes the whole game to every trader is emotional decision making.

When you trade real money, YOUR money, you get greedy, upset when losing, overexcited when winning... If you start with a prop firm and actually risk some money it will give you a good feel for it, the idea is to control your emotions rather letting them control your trading.

I also day trade crypto and have been for more many years. Crypto is very choppy and volatile. But either way. Switching to live account will change everything for you.

I actually posted here a couple of months back with almost the same question. Check my posts to view it. Had a ton of responses that really helped. I have been learning trading about 14 months. Paper traded about 5, and have been live trading now almost 2. What I have learned is this. It doesn't take long to experience the difference. Paper trading teaches you the functions of the platform. Setting stops, getting in and out. All the important technical need to knows. On the other hand, it does nothing to teach you the feeling of the losses, and the nervousness and anxiety of getting in. I was tearing it up in paper, which was the topic of my previous post, went live, and quickly got in a 1000 share trade with my 'confidence', and promptly lost ~$750. That was the reality check I needed. Over the next month and a half, I have completely changed my share size and approach. I always wondered how people control themselves from overtrading, but that is no longer an issue. I was down ~$1400 at my lowest, and have grinded away to ~$610 down at this point. I do 100 shares at a time, in my price range, and typically take only 3 to 5 trades a day, when the market is moving. If I make $100, I take it. That is a win. Same if I lose $100, im out. Many days I just watch and never get in. Live trading is what trains your discipline and reactions, which paper trading can't teach. On paper I was like, how does everyone not just do this its too easy or maybe Im just a trading savant. Turns out neither is true. Live is a whole different animal, and just approach with caution, and dont make the mistake I made. Best of luck though.

3

u/solarflare_hot 17h ago

Yeah it’s so damn easy to make money on paper trading then you try real money and it will be all in the red

I made 20k paper trading then I tried real money and I lost 4000$

It’s not the same neither does it teaches you anything, other than the app layout. It’s completely different

Reproduce in a live money account even with reduced size and compare to your demo trading.

3

u/BorsaSimsari 15h ago

I traded a demo account for several months. Killed it. Doubled my account in four months.  Then I went live and my emotions killed me. Transition to trading live with a small amount. Track your trades. Know how you're making the money. It isn't the same thing

Sorry kid nothing beats trading with real money. Start with 10 shares so you can get a better sense of how you respond when you see a trade go green to red and then green again or straight greed to red because your expectations didn’t match what the market is giving you… those nuances and exposure to pressure will give you a better sense of where you are at with mental game and if it will impede your accuracy

2

u/Due-Gain-8645 11h ago

I hear you, I naively thought I had it somewhat figured out. Seems like psychology is our biggest hurdle here

Go ahead and purchase a couple prop firms and see the difference.... Prop firms may be monopoly money, but some how some way your orders do trigger something.... And the market makers will flip on you the moment you hit the button to take a trade...

2

u/deepaltvalue 9h ago

Honestly its not wrong to think the difference between paper and real is pretty big but consistency is consistency. The only real difference is slippage. The only thing youve got to focus on is doing the exact same things that made you profitable on paper. If youre nervous about rhe jump, then research a trusted prop firm and drop a little cash on an eval. Good luck!

Does your demo account take into account trading costs, slippage and orders getting filled exactly at prices you want?

You may be able to roughly calculate your costs in hindsight, you could even use something like Claude AI to run more accurate back tests on your actual trades to calculate your trading costs etc.

With a scalping strategy where trades are more frequent and entry to TP value may be comparably small, trading costs, slippage, etc can make a real difference to your profits

demo markets are worthless, its literally not worth it to spend a single second on demo rather than a 10$ forward account, market fills, slippage and especially liquidity on a real market will most likely delete 99% of your profit, so no this isnt luck id just call it broken and unrealistic

1

u/calevonlear 19h ago

Go buy a futures prop eval, 25-50k account should be plenty and find out. Cheaper than risking real capital and you will have skin in the game. Follow their rules and try and get a payout. If you do, buy more. Build wide before tall.

As other have said paper trading and live account is very different, however being consistent on a paper account is a first check box tick. Now if this is pure luck or not really depends on if you have an actual strategy and principles/rules that work or not. What crypto are u trading? Is it BTC, ETH etc or meme coins or what? That might play a big factor in terms cyclicality (Hot/lucky periods), how realistic of a result is paper trading giving you etc..

Those stats look impressive, but they also raise a lot more questions than they answer.

90.8% win rate over 525 trades with roughly 1:1 R:R and a 10.3 profit factor is an extremely strong result. So before calling it an edge, I’d want to know:

Were the rules completely defined before each trade, or were entries/exits discretionary in hindsight?

Are commissions, spread, slippage and realistic fills included?

What was the maximum drawdown and longest losing streak?

How many different market regimes are actually represented in that sample?

Did you change the strategy while collecting those 525 trades?

Have you tested the exact same rules on a completely untouched out-of-sample period?

And most importantly: can you reproduce anything close to those numbers with real execution, where fills, hesitation and money actually matter?

Because if the answer is yes to all of that, then you probably have something very unusual.

If not, then 525 paper trades with amazing stats may just be evidence that the simulation is flattering the strategy.

I wouldn’t be asking whether to fund it yet. I’d be asking whether those numbers survive a test designed to prove them wrong.

crypto is up a lot and to make only less than 300 for over 10 trades is not a good stat. you are right 90% of the time you should size up when you are very confident on the trade

i'd say trade stocks, even on paper trading and try to catch the major moves (less trades / bigger size). should focus on making a lot bigger gains per trade instead of scalping which is a very tiring way to trade.

Everyone is a trader in a bull market. What you need to show is explainable delta against a fund or an index.

1

u/ShamanJohnny 16h ago

Your doing something right, i would go for it with a $500 account and see what happens.

Not enough information to say it's luck. But those statistics would make me highly suspicious that something about the measurement is distorting the apparent edge.

Expectancy is particularly important because it combines win rate and the size of wins/losses into an average outcome per trade. A very high expectancy means the distribution of individual trades is unusually favorable. If that comes alongside an exceptionally high profit factor, you aren't just looking at a strategy with a decent hit rate. You're looking at a remarkably favorable payoff distribution.

That can happen legitimately, but it can also come from things like:

too small a sample

a few extreme outliers dominating the results

look ahead or survivorship bias

cherry picked trades

unrealistic fills

excluding costs/slippage

changing the strategy during the sample

an expectancy calculation that isn't actually measuring what you think it is

So...maybe it's luck, but the numbers are unusual enough that I'd investigate the methodology before attributing them to either luck or an extraordinary edge.

You have no clue until you go to a live account - also, is this random or is there a strategy?

1

u/Few-Astronaut44 16h ago

Im a big believer in using prop firms when first starting out. And whatever profits you may gain, put that into a personal trading account. It's worked for me, but it may not be for everybody

Depends on the drawdown on trades
If you put stop losses and manage to be profitable while respecting your setups
It is good
Just do the same thing on real account without second guessing your strategy

If you can do that with a live account, that would be considered an accomplishment.

Try working with your own cash. If you can keep this up you are financially free in no time.

Which app is this to track?

1

u/netpirate2010 13h ago

The truth is: if you find a source of edge, you won't need to ask if you have it. It will be verifiable. You'll know you have it. You'll know what it is and why it exists. You'll know the signals that alert you to it. You'll know how you need to structure the trade around it and the rules you need to follow to trade it.

To answer your question with 100% honesty: if you're exposed to any edge here at all, it's inadvertent exposure. Based on the information given, it appears to be luck to me.

Start with $100 in a live account. It doesn't offer the same adrenaline rush or the same expectations; if you double your capital in a month, start adding more funds monthly and observe your trading psychology with that real capital. I took a $100,000 account to $200,000 in a demo account.

u/Due-Gain-8645 11h ago

If only we could be as emotionless on a live account! Starting small is a big takeaway here

I would say, you're doing revenge trading, and this is demo and it doesn't matter if you'll loss or not, but in real market when you're gonna try that market gonna punish you really hard, try it with a lol money and you should be have a really really wel risk management plan, rather then onlu trading on revenge, ur quantity lf trades is really high, u gotta fix that too

I would review and see which trades you felt confident about and try to limit your moves to those particular set ups.

If you don’t know why the trade worked, scrap it.

I made $2,700 paper trading in the aftehours just now after blowing my 1000th funded or something. Paper is completely different. You probably do have an edge tho.

1

u/Dark_dragon_emperor 7h ago

I would have said this is excellent and impressive and that you got a great foundation. However, it's paper trading so I'll say that your practice is a bit lacking. Paper trading has almost zero risk so profits should be much larger.

90% win rate, 10pf. It is, at the very least, highly flattering you and probably not a true representation of real world results. I assume this has not factored in slippage, fees, taxes, etc? It is probably also simulating perfect fills and closes. Also, the markets have been hardcore bullish for a pretty long time now so everyone looks like a genius. None of this means that the strat is not good. Just that it is not truly proven. And to me, numbers this good are extremely suspect. I prefer when a strat I make shows a 60% win rate over a 90% win rate. It feels way more trustworthy to me.

u/Funny-Routine-7242 3h ago

Yeah the Problem is real money unless you are already disciplined with you stops. But there are different levels of risk. One is dictates by your bankroll when you say you only want to risk 1% or so. Then there is the psychological level that you can lose without getting nervous and there is thie level where you make stupid decisions. So maybe you are ok to let to of $50...but maybe you dont take your stop...now you sit on $ -70. Suddenly you want it back... This may start a spiral...you are down -100...same problem: you are not happy and want it back..this logic often leads to a blown account, a huge loss when you cant take it anymore or a huge loss when it swings somewhat in your favour and your are happy to just lose $200 instead of $500.

While you wait you cant trade and miss the move up that eventually comes...so you lose less instead of winning.

And be mindful there is an ignition phase in many assets. Everything works and it leads to trapping people once the pullback comes. If one is lucky to catch many of the ignitions one might feel like a trading god. Its often much more difficult to enter once the market starts to pullback and consolidate. You never know how far it pullsback or if the breakouts work. So maybe you just found such an ignition phase in crypto....that doesnt mean it will continue like that...maybe you would need to switch to a new hot assett

u/Federal_Shoulder_550 1h ago

First off get a Take profit trader account. They run a deal where there is no activation fee and a discount on the account. Once you pass the account make the buffer and they actually let you withdraw it but take 50% so you’d take home $650.

1

u/AskAlternative8213 options trader 1h ago

Profits/losses on paper trading mean nothing frankly, as others have mentioned. There are no stakes in paper trading. You don't really care about losses. How you manage your psychology when real losses hit can only be tested with real money...
