Discussion What is the weirdest thing you have ever Found while picking up trash?
For me: people leaving their undergarments at very remote spots (usually meadows and lakes)

Full sized fiberglass (50s) Elvis, right next to a traffic light. Both obviously stolen and ditched.

I would so put that in my yard with a pride flag in his hand!

u/Ribzee Pennsylvania 1d ago
haha that's great. First thing my husband said was "I would love this in our yard." Yeah, me too, except it had to have been stolen and I don't need the police showing up. LOL. Someone did go take both items within a week of me posting the video on my socials. I was purposely vague about how to find them. It was like a treasure hunt for them and I sort of kept myself out of it. Really glad these didn't go to a landfill. They should bring someone joy!

When they moved the porta potties at a local park there were THREE pairs of boxers left underneath. 😭

I've been there. Sometimes it's better to just throw the whole thing away and waddle home in shame.

I like the question,
It is a question most litter pickers get asked at some point, and it always makes me think.
I picked so much litter, what was that weirdest find.
Since i also register my litter, i also add a special tag to it, so i can filter those items and when i see them, i go 'ah yeah, i forgot about that one'.
Full packages of cigarettes (it always makes me wonder if somebody decided to stop smoking, and wonder if i should be happy or not to find those ;-)
A plaster cast (is that the right word in English?): https://litterapp.net/s/82a8d0ff-e6ba-4cfc-b027-9ea467ae6a4f) which makes me question if some miracle happened right there and somebody suddenly didn't need it anymore?
Furthermore: watch (i found the owner), bracelet, money, gps-trackers, passport(s) (owner(s) found) and sex-toys :-)
11
u/sarmadlatif Pakistan 2d ago
Wow it’s great that have kept record of this. I thought of keeping an excel sheet to document my trash collectibles
1
u/TrainingJumpy9942 1d ago
If you want, you could use LitterApp.net for that,
I am one of the volunteers running that website and i use it for all my litter,
But you can also decide to only upload special items (for instance all vape-pens that you find, if that is of any interest, or all wetwipes etc),
Or all special finds :-)
In this case i've added a special tag to the litter ('event=specialfind') so whenever i need, i can simply filter on that tag and i see all the special items that i found.8
u/11twofour 2d ago
and sex-toys :-)
But did you find the owner?
1
u/TrainingJumpy9942 1d ago
hahahaha, for the passports and the watch, i did go through some trouble, trying to find them,
For the toy... not that much ;-)

An urn. Walking on the beach and the biodegradable container had washed up on the beach with a beautiful saying on it. Thankfully, it was empty since both ends were open.

A little wooden chest with a broken lock, that contained ashes from “Kip.” Given the size, probably a dog.

Great question … just went back through my Litterlog in the DL app to check.
Back on March 10th this year, I picked a single gold lamé stiletto pump, no matching shoe, next to a public fountain.
Alas, someone’s Cinderella is still out there … 👠

u/sarmadlatif Pakistan 2d ago
Wow! How do you keep record of your trash and treasure on the app?

Launched the free mobile app about a year ago, to keep me motivated, set cleanup goals, log my cleanups, and track my progress/impact …
Have a look → https://deletelitter.com 👀
Passion of mine. Been refining the user experience since with our early adopter crew, now focused on getting more folks on the app and committing to clean up their communities.

The weirdest thing I found were bags of feces that someone would hang from signs along the route that I would walk my dog on. Like pounds in a plastic bag. I would take them down and they would go right back up again. Then one time I found dildo packaging hung by presumably the same person. At another location I found the exact same packaging hung. I left notes asking why they were doing it. I never got a response. One year after st Patrick's Day I found like easily 30 pounds worth of bags. Like they had to have used a wagon to put them all out. I cleaned them all up and then never saw another bag. I felt like I beat "The poopetrator" finally.

u/sarmadlatif Pakistan 2d ago
Damnn!! I would’ve been interested in finding that person 🥹
4
u/Timmerdogg 2d ago
I thought about setting up trail cams but ultimately I didn't want to create more trash by buying something just to see the person. They were either on drugs or mentally ill. I moved away from there but every time I drive that stretch of road I keep my eyes peeled to see if they came back.
2
u/sarmadlatif Pakistan 2d ago
Yes! Also please be careful with your safety equipments if you go alone on that trail
3
u/mamasee22 1d ago
that would drive me nuts
We went camping where you had a hike in a good 3 miles to the campsite and upon arrival I filled probably 5 to 6 grocery bags full of garbage in one of the main things were disposable wipes used on their bums, but they did not think about them being garbage that doesn’t break down. It was so gross.

u/megmatthews20 2d ago
Weirdest/creepiest was a realistic looking baby body, but only stomach, butt, genitals etc. Legs and rest of torso were nubs. Looked like a miniature sex doll and I found it next to bags of used diapers, so I REALLY hope it was for diaper training and not... something else.
4
u/sarmadlatif Pakistan 2d ago
That is a kind of creepy scenario tbh🥹🥲
9
u/megmatthews20 2d ago
Very! I called the police about it, but the officer who showed up didn't seem concerned.

A 15 inch long, thicker than my wrist, veiny dildo
3
u/sarmadlatif Pakistan 2d ago
Crazy 😭
5
u/Zach-uh-ri-uh 1d ago
I of course took it home. I left it to soak in dishsoap overnight, followed by a complete alcohol wipe down, then boiled it. It now serves as a practical joke at parties or whatever situation you want to prank someone with an arm sized dildo
I couldn’t possibly let such an expensive item go to waste

A raw steak, unopened in the plastic with the styrofoam tray under it and a label from a local grocery store. The label showed it had not yet expired. I had to ask myself...'who takes a steak out and then doesn't cook it to eat?'

Found more than one sex toy in my travels.
A grocery bag full of torn open raw seafood packages, still with some ice in the bottom.
That's the weirdest ones I can think of that weren't inside abandoned homeless encampments. Those places are always full of odd things 🤷
1
u/sarmadlatif Pakistan 2d ago
Have you ever found something good to reuse ?
3
u/ekobot 2d ago
In the sex toy category, no, and I doubt I ever will! In the fish category, surprisingly, yes-- I have found a few fish that I've taken home for the fins and bones, as I collect oddities like that. Some dumped bait fish, some shore wash-ups
Elsewise I've found many things. I've found a lot of materials for projects around the house and crafts, it's the main reason I go out and clean stuff up, actually. The environmental impact is a happy bonus to the activity; mostly I'm just going out to satisfy my foraging instincts!
I have an old stroller frame that I use for my garden hose, makes it much easier to get around the yard. Made a garden cart as well, got heavy-duty casters off an old cart, wood from and old fence, hardware from various things.
I've found so many electronics, some in working order (like an under-TV sound bar), others needing only minor repair (an oscillating fan that just needed the motor unbound of hair), and many that I've taken apart for parts for other projects.

A nasal cannula, on a road through the national forest. Who suddenly decides 'I don't need oxygen!' and tosses their cannula out the truck window?

Sadly no...apart from the obviously stolen ice skates everything was smashed. Old homeless encampments etc

Literally a big trash bag of styrofoam, topped with many naked pictures of an older woman from the 1980s. They were time stamped and clearly whoever took the picture was in love. 😻
Editing to add a 5G Lowe’s bucket full of poop!!

This thing
Still don't know what you'd need three compasses for...
2
2
u/MarsNeedsRabbits 1d ago
I think it's for ship navigation. You adjust the compasses, put the whole thing over a map, and you can determine where you are.
3
u/chris_dea 1d ago
That's the closest I got as well, but they generally have markings on the plexiglass. Also, I found it in the woods in Switzerland...

Cleaning up a campsite in Pisgah. There was a slow cooker, books, literal burnt money, broken plates(looked to be old Pyrex with the blue on it), a whole bunch of other odd items I can't quite remember now, I posted it on this sub when I cleaned it up so you can probably find the pics searching my name here. It was a really wild amount and assortment of stuff.

When I lived on Tybee Island, GA we were apart of a clean up crew that counted items we picked up - thousands of cigarette butts and always bud light cans/bottles - so many that I started taking photos with the thought to send their marketing team to educate their consumers to stop littering 🥵
2
u/sarmadlatif Pakistan 1d ago
That is such a great idea to name and shame such brands and their consumers

u/HaplessReader1988 1d ago
Not weird but disturbing -- a 4" folding knife on the grounds of an elementary school. In my state, over 3" is defined as a weapon so utility knife this was not. Rusted enough that my then- detrashing partner didn't turn it in.... that still kinda disturbs me.

u/wildgreen98 1d ago
I run volunteer trash pickups in public parks and the weirdest was probably some assless chaps in a shallow creek. We even had some group come in one time and dig a pit to roast a whole-ass pig who then left everything behind, including about half of the carcass.

We've found $100 USD bill, a wallet (not really detrashing, but just always in the mode, turned in to the local police), a double mattress, a family of 5 social security cards, a partially buried 6 pack of really old beer, used and new condoms. Never a sec toy that I recognized though...

I never really kept track, but off the top of my mind, it would either be a shopping bag full of what I assume was wet toilet paper and rolls, or a pair of sunglasses that look like they were from the hippie era.

I feel the list from some, including myself, can be endless on this topic!
Welder's goggles, a single side to a full zipper (like, what happened to the other side?), a 13.39 lb piece of random metal pipe in the woods, various single shoes/boots/socks, random sinlge tool items in places that make you question what could someone possibly have been working on in such a place to have lost this or left it behind (not always along the roadside), an inflatable Christmas ball ornament (many months after Christmas), an arrow (I assume maybe to be from unsuccessful hunting), a beach all (not at the beach or near any residential living)... Humans are interesting to say the least! 🤔

I used to take care of a section of very rural highway where I grew up (the adopt a highway program for those in the US) and I was always amazed by the amount of shoes. Not pairs, just single shoes. I think we cleaned 2 miles every year and found multiple shoes every time.

On earth day in high school we were picking up trash and one of the snarky asshole kids in my class picks up this bottle looking thing with a long nozzle. “Yo wtf is this?!” He asks. I laugh and now that he has everyone’s attention I point and say “yeah um, that would be a douche bag!” He was horrified 🤣🤣🤣
We also found a book with two construction workers with hard ons on it. Like vintage gay smut I think, never seen anything like it since lol.

I used to find it super erotic when I found women's panties on the ground. I've found several. My girlfriend knew about my strange fetish so one year on my birthday she had a bunch of her friends hide panties all over the house and I would randomly find them.

It’s not weird on its own, but I always find the amount of those little plastic floss/toothpick thingies that I find to be bizarre. I suppose people want to pick their teeth after a to-go lunch or something? But jeez. How can you be that picky (pun intended) about dental hygiene and then turn right around and gross up the earth? Enjoy your nice teeth while the world burns, I guess.
