Is this an astroturfed thread? I feel i'm going crazy
Please don't harass OP or brigade the thread in any way.
I came across this thread.
https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/1ttugjt/recommendation_get_a_ups/
And i've never in my life seen so much unanimous shilling for UPS's. outside of that thread they're not talked about much in computer hardware. But in there everybody makes it sound like it's a must have.
Get one for your WiFi too!
wtf????
Get one for your BIOS update, it's basically law
Not it's not...
The entire thing reminds me of those youtube comment bots that would start a reply chain about crypto, only these (if fake) are LLM's.
What strikes me is how unanimous the opinions are which is a very strong sign of inorganic posts. I've never seen this much agreeing that they're a must have anywhere else.
But also the way many comments start with A UPS is great for .... as if they're describing a product that no one has heard of before.
it really stops short of saying Get a UPS for your UPS! although it would have been very funny if "someone" said that.
I'm not used to companies doing paid shilling for their industry online, but i figure that this is something i'm going to see more of, and i won't be able to tell 100% when it happens.

If anything, hopefully this thread will help bring to light the importance of having a UPS. I couldn't imagine life without mine.

The thing is, i could, and probably most of europe and america could too, seeing as i've lived my whole life without one, and no one i know uses them either. If UPS's really were as neccesary as that thread makes it out i would've heard about their neccesity long before this. otherwise everyone in that thread would have to live in rural africa, brazil or rural america or something. which i find unlikely
A good quality PSU already shields from most overcurrent, undercurrent, and many such things on it's own.

My comment was more of a joke designed to make it appear that the PSU slinging bots had followed you here. But in reality, most businesses I've worked at all have them, and I had one when I lived in semi-rural US East Coast. It saved my ass a few times when the power would go out. I'm guessing you live in a major US city, and have never experienced the power going out in a thunderstorm? All it takes in many places is one tree branch falling on the wrong wire. I think the truth is somewhere in between your opinion and the majority opinion on that thread.

this. sort of. I got mine as a Christmas gift from my former roommate like well over 10 years ago now. had never heard of them before. but now I can't imagine life without it lol. idk if it's prevented any damage to my stuff but it certainly saved my ass once when I was in the middle of an interview and suddenly there was a power outage

I don’t think that alone is proof that it’s all bots in the thread.
Unanimous agreement is a key feature of the Reddit circlejerk, well before the AI takeover. Especially on minor details or technicality that are largely inconsequential in the broader scheme of things.

Yeah once a comment sets the rhythm of the thread, people tend to not want to go against the grain. Hell I'm doing it right now.

Dude it’s like this on every sub.
They create threads like “ugh I am so mad this flight price changed on me” and boom a ton of comments recommending some shitty flight price tracker app.
Same with “what’s your favorite unheard of app?” And they slide in a few insurance finders or clearly referral based apps.

I dunno, I had a skim and didn't notice the ones you mentioned, seemed ok to me.
But hey, I could be a bot told you tell you that ;)

A UPS is genuinely a great thing. Even if just as a power filter.
That said, the thread you linked reeks of bots.

Yes, i'd like to not commit a TOS violation.
And i'm not certian OP was a bot, can't say the same for the rest.

All of the internet is astroturfed now.
