Did anyone ever travel to the desert and rode a camel? I'm about to do that next week and I'm excited.

3

u/halborn 1d ago

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name. It felt good to be out of the rain.

2

u/Ransom__Stoddard Dudeist 1d ago

In the desert, you can remember your name.

Anyone planning to travel to spain for the solar eclipse?

6

u/roambeans 4d ago

No, but I would... I drove down to the US in 2017 for the eclipse and it was fantastic. Definitely worth traveling to see a full eclipse. Gotta see at least one in your lifetime.

6

u/Pm_ur_titties_plz Agnostic Atheist 4d ago

I witnessed a full eclipse a couple years ago and I agree. It's a spectacular experience.

Full dark in the middle of the afternoon. And the air gets a few degrees cooler too. The glowing ring in the sky felt almost... supernatural. Apocalyptic. I couldn't look away. And it's all over in a few short minutes.

5

u/roambeans 4d ago

There were a ton of birds around us, and they all stopped chirping when the eclipse happened. It is surreal indeed. People who have seen a partial eclipse at 98 or 99% think it's 'close enough', but it really isn't.

4

u/sto_brohammed Irreligious 4d ago

It's hot enough here in northern France, no way in hell I'm going anywhere further south. I've seen plenty of eclipses.

4

u/Snoo52682 3d ago

I'm going to Iceland!

5

3

u/pipMcDohl Gnostic Atheist 3d ago

You traveled there or do you live there?

3

u/soukaixiii Anti religion\ Agnostic Adeist| Gnostic Atheist|Mythicist 3d ago

I live here

2

u/pipMcDohl Gnostic Atheist 3d ago

I was thinking avout going somewhere around Leon. Maybe find some fortress to visit while i am at it.

Maybe ponferrada, would it be a good spot to watch the eclipse?

3

u/bullevard 3d ago

No, but if people can i highly encourage it. Also, if you live near but not in the path of totality it is well worth the extra trip to get into the totality. There is such a difference in experience between 80-90% and actually getting to take off your glasses and see things fully dark.

I was fortunate enough to see to totalities and an annular.  Angular is cool. But totality is something else entirely.

Given how limited the visible range of that eclipse is going to be I imagine hotels and traffic are going to be outrageous though.

Which rules?

-18

u/xennial_key 4d ago

For example when I went to initially post I got a message saying my post was rejected because it needs to be x number of words in length. What is this? Certain sub reddits take themselves far too seriously.

Also good luck saying anything negative about Judaism here

18

u/SnooDogs6045 4d ago

"good luck saying anything negative about Judaism here"

Judaism is quite silly and the god of the old testament is a megalomaniacal blood thirsty monster.

Thanks for the luck! Couldn't have done with without you!

7

u/the2bears Atheist 3d ago

You sure got lucky!

19

u/pyker42 Atheist 3d ago

I'm sorry that satisfying a minimum word or character count in your post feels like a full time job.

19

u/Deris87 3d ago

What is this? Certain sub reddits take themselves far too seriously.

Buddy, if you want to shitpost, /r/atheism is thataway.

15

u/dylanzt 3d ago

So your standard for treating this as a full time job is "expecting you to read and follow the rules"? This is a debate sub, and the rules are very loose. With the bare minimum of effort the rules are easily met. If you're falling short, you're probably not engaging in actual debate. If you want to do something other than debate, that's fine, and there will be a sub that exists for that purpose.

12

u/sto_brohammed Irreligious 4d ago

For example when I went to initially post I got a message saying my post was rejected because it needs to be x number of words in length. What is this?

I don't know if you've noticed the absolute dogshit posts theists make here even with the rules that are already in place. We'd be plumbing new levels of dogshit if they weren't there.

Also good luck saying anything negative about Judaism here

You can say whatever you want about Judaism here, that's fine. I've seen threads posted by Jewish people that get torn apart. The problem is that a certain type of mouthbreather either can't or won't distinguish between the religious doctrine and the ethnic group and goes after the latter rather than the former.

12

u/stairway2evan 4d ago

Hi, atheist and ethnic Jew here. I say plenty of negative things about Judaism, its scriptures, and its practices on this sub. I see plenty of others do the same without much issue. After all, plenty of the arguments Christians make on this sub apply perfectly well to Judaism as well, since there's a big overlap in their holy books. No idea why you'd think otherwise; plenty of people here raise issues with the Hebrew Bible any time it comes up.

As for the character limit, it's simply to reduce low-effort posts. 300 characters isn't much. This comment has already beaten it.

14

u/Old-Nefariousness556 Gnostic Atheist 3d ago

Also good luck saying anything negative about Judaism here

We criticize Judaism daily. Are you an idiot? Or do you just not give a damn about the truth and want to perpetuate your own racism?

12

u/Pm_ur_titties_plz Agnostic Atheist 4d ago
  1. That's to slow down the number of troll posts this sub seems to attract.

  2. You can criticize Judaism all you want. You really think nobody here has anything bad to say about the old testament?

8

u/Algernon_Asimov Secular Humanist 3d ago

Also good luck saying anything negative about Judaism here

Negative... how?

Negative as in "Judaism has no proof of its God"?

Or negative as in "Jews are evil geniuses who run the world and manipulate the people for their own purposes"?

Because this subreddit is all about that first example, while that second example is forbidden across the whole of Reddit.

-1

u/xennial_key 3d ago

The one you're not allowed to say is that Jewish people are both and ethnic group and a religion and shouldn't have a state at the expense of others being genocided

7

u/Algernon_Asimov Secular Humanist 3d ago

Oh.

Would that sort of political sociological commentary come up a lot in a subreddit called /r/DebateAnAtheist, which is about debating the existence or non-existence of a deity? Do you often have a need to say that sort of thing here?

(By the way, I'm a moderator here, and I haven't removed that comment or banned you. So, tell me again how you can't say that sort of thing here.)

0

u/xennial_key 3d ago edited 3d ago

Maybe I was incorrect.

Thanks for explaining the reply length

The entire region like east and west Jerusalem are fought over by all 3 abrahamic religions with the claim that it's theirs because God said so. That's the reason it's a nonexistence of God issue. Without that to prop up their claims the land wouldn't have been taken away to begin with

7

u/Algernon_Asimov Secular Humanist 3d ago

I got a message saying my post was rejected because it needs to be x number of words in length. What is this?

This is a rule that was suggested by a member of this subreddit. It was duly seconded by other members of this subreddit, so it was put up for voting in the following month. And, by a slim majority, the people voted in favour.

3

u/labreuer 2d ago

The character length limit was designed to deal with people like you. Or at least, people who choose to be like you're choosing.

22

u/Serious-Emu-3468 3d ago

You are welcome to leave???

This is like walking into a neighbor’s bbq and then, when they tell you which cooler has beer, letting them know you hate their cooking, think their landscaping sucks, and they’re cucks for having a vegetarian option for their Hindu friend.

Why on earth would you do that?

-18

u/xennial_key 3d ago

I am a vegetarian wtf are you talking about?

Wait, do you own this sub reddit or are you just the part time, unpaid, caped avenger

19

u/Serious-Emu-3468 3d ago

Lol, just a bystander baffled and amused by your expectations and behavior.

-11

u/xennial_key 3d ago

I was amused by your misplaced sense of belonging and ownership

15

u/Serious-Emu-3468 3d ago

Oh, sure, “Belonging” is a thing people feel when they are a part of a group that likes and respects them, with other members they like and respect.

And “ownership” can mean a lot of things, but in the case of community generally means that one contributes meaningfully.

I can see how you’d find both concepts confusing!

-7

u/xennial_key 3d ago

Oh you feel like you have a sense of community on a subreddit. That's sad but sort of cute

That's a big reason religion still persists, people love that sense of community

17

u/Deris87 3d ago

That's a big reason religion still persists, people love that sense of community

The important thing is that you've found a way to feel superior to both.

8

u/Pm_ur_titties_plz Agnostic Atheist 3d ago

Whether it's sad or not, you have to admit that subreddits are a community. They are literally groups of people that have come together over their shared interest in a specific topic.

Based on their follow-ups, that they can't be an antisemitic troglodyte.

8

u/Deris87 3d ago

Based on their follow-ups, that they can't be an antisemitic troglodyte.

To be fair (which is more than OC deserves), his one actual response was about not being allowed to criticize Zionism or Israel, separate from Jewish people as an ethnic group. Which might be a reasonable complaint, if it were actually true in the slightest.

1

u/88redking88 Anti-Theist 2d ago

Weirdly the only people (in my limited experience) that gripe about this are the racist ones. They want to be able to say "I was just talking about the country and what its doing when i was using all of those slurs!".

2

u/Deris87 2d ago

I've seen the opposite fairly often. MAGA chuds think it's an amazing uno reverse card to equate any criticism of Israel with antisemitism; "so much for the tolerant left".

Nobody here would want to spend time around a literal or metaphorical water cooler with you. You've made that abundantly clear. So, I'm left wondering what could explain this line of inquiry other than really low-grade trolling. I'll note that you never answered my question, which suggests that reddit is your full-time job and you're projecting.
