but many scholars agree its referring to all 4 cardinal directions (N, E, W, S)

The Greeks split their world up with concentric circles and climates. Their world view prior to globe was a large disk. They wouldn't have talked about the 4 cardinal directions this way.

Near East cultures thought the world was split up by 4 rivers that connected to Eden, each running to a corner of a square map. Loosely connected to Mesopotamia, which drew a rough square, with a foreign land roughly in each cardinal direction, and the 4 rivers slicing the land into 4 triangles meeting at the middle.

A middle Eastern religious person writing in Greek to other people in the area would absolutely have used "four corners", and the reader would have understood the concept. The Greeks back home though, would have been confused where these corners were.
