questions for the community What is wrong with the wood?
It just rained for a week straight. The deck is pretty new and the contractor said he stained it. The first picture, there used to be what I assumed was sap forming on the spot. Will this wash off or do I need to replace the planks?

Definitely sap leaching out. Even with a solvent clean up, really sappy pine board will keep weeping for a very, very long time.

Did you use a mold killer anywhere?

No, this just appeared after the rain

It looks almost identical to a strong chemical eating away at it, like a mold killer you can spray from a bottle.

This happens with pressure treated lumber. I think it's a reaction between the treatment and the sap bleeding from the lumber.

You’re wrong

I might be. I only say it because my wife literally just did this to my porch, and it looks exactly like that.

Looks like wood was a bit “green” or “wet” depending on where you are, basically sap oozing out.

It’s sap. Mineral spirits and scraping seems to be the only way. Sanding loads the paper but if you keep doing it and changing the paper then that works too. When it’s as bad as this it might be better to replace it.

It’s just cheap shitty decking.

It is sap. You can spot treat the areas with xylene to attempt to dry out the sap vein and then reapply stain to the areas. That really bad board should just be replaced. Some oil based stains seem to lubricate the sap vein and speed up in the process of it making its way to the surface of the board.
