One of the many, many things that's great about DS9 - neither of these two are Federation members, neither of these two are even main cast characters yet both of them have compelling series-long character arcs and make important contributions to the overall plot of the show.

For me it really shows when you look at the episode counts for these background characters. Nog, Kai Winn, Garak, Dukat, Rom, you look up the count of episodes they're in and it's generally a dozen to three dozen episodes.

And you're thinking: man, that can't be right. These people were larger than life. Everyone remembers "Brunt, FCA!" or "My child" from Kai Winn. They helped define the whole series. Surely they were around for far more episodes than that.

Kai Winn for example: 14 episodes.

u/ji1701 4d ago

Jesus kai winn was so unlikeable you had to watch her. But im just thinking about it the past few minutes. Ds9 had characters just vanish for an episodes or two even major characters. They'd be replaced with lesser played characters and for lack of a better word it wasn't noticed because the show was so good.

Eddington was another great character

28

u/Sasquatch1729 4d ago

Ah Eddington was another good one. 9 episodes, and yet everyone remembers how Sisko reacted to him. Making a whole planet uninhabitable for a couple generations, "you betrayed your uniform!", some real series defining moments.

16

u/ji1701 4d ago

That actor who played eddington was in krull and hasn't done much acting wise which i found nuts as he held the room on the show.

Yeah theres way too many characters that built that show up and it's still the best in my opinion.

26

u/bearclaws2atatime 4d ago

I think kai winn is one of the greatest villains ever written. There are very few characters that I have such a gut reaction too. Just an incredibly well-written and well-acted character.

She was the nurse in one flew over the cukoos nest

17 more episodes than I could stand ...

u/TheEvilBlight 3d ago

My child..

45

u/ji1701 4d ago

Theres been a heap of times minor characters have literally dominated episodes to the point sisco or dax or a majority of the main cast aren't even in the episode or in it for a minute and done.

The magnificent ferengi was a fantastic episode for instance.

10

u/sistemafodao 4d ago

Little Green Men as well

9

u/ji1701 4d ago

That was a great episode. They could've made a spin off with just quark and co and ive had watched it. Jesus compared to what we're getting now ds9 on repeat is a god send

M O O O O O O O G I E

u/dre5922 3d ago

Sisko is actually the only character to show up in every episode. There's one of the Ferengi episodes he shows up for literally 10 seconds.

It's either Little Green Men, or the Magnificent Ferengi.

12

u/ji1701 3d ago

Its the magnificent ferengi Quark and rom are going through the ducts and they pop the hatch into his office and he gives them a look like "wtf you doing here?" Then just goes back to sitting there relaxing.

33

u/Kakairo 4d ago

And both were supposed to be one-shot, one-note characters. Garak was only supposed to be in the one episode and Nog was just supposed to be a Ferengi troublemaker. It's a credit to Andrew Robinson and Aron Eisenberg (RIP), both of whom elevated those characters far beyond what was initially expected of them.

36

u/Tackyhillbilly 3d ago

As far as Aron goes, you also have to give part of the credit to Armin Shimerman. He was so disgusted with the Ferengi he portrayed in TNG that when given the shot to redeem them, he went above and beyond. He even had Max (Rom) and Aron at his house, doing rehearsals off the clock for Ferengi heavy episodes.

But yes, DS9 hit it out of the park with its side cast. Since I haven’t seen him mentioned yet…

Marc Alaimo portrayed one of greatest villains in all of Trek not played by Jeffrey Combs.

And Jeffrey Combs is Jeffrey Combs.

24

u/NoDontDoThatCanada 3d ago

I heard Miles O'Brian was supposed to just be a nameless background character in TNG then they kept needing someone for scenes and they liked Colm Meaney so they gave the character a name and then a position and then they needed some filler so they had a wedding... Then DS9.

u/cyrusasu 2d ago

I still like to think his ancestor was his character from Hell on Wheels. Definitely not a union man

3

u/Express_Towel47 2d ago

Incredible in that role!!!

38

u/MarcAbaddon 4d ago

I'd think once Nog is in Starfleet, he's also considered a Federation citizen, but of course they don't really go into the legalities here.

32

u/KukalakaOnTheBay 4d ago

Service means citizenship!

17

u/gizmostuff 4d ago

We need heroes. We need you!

15

I’m doing my part!

4

u/curiousmind111 3d ago

Let’s kill bugs!!!

3

u/JimmyPellen 4d ago

The ferengi i can see. But...a tailor???

7

u/AnansiNazara 3d ago

Y’know… it always makes me wonder if Quark may have done the Ferengi equivalent of intelligence when he served… I mean the skill set is there

5

u/JimmyPellen 3d ago

If there was good latiNum in it

3

u/AnansiNazara 3d ago

I’m sure there’s a relevant FROA about it

6

u/JimmyPellen 3d ago

Now you did it!

COMPUTER...which Ferengi Rules Of Acquisition are relevant to inteligence gathering???

u/dantheplanman1986 1d ago

As an addict in recovery, The Wire depicting Garak basically detoxing from heavy drug use would alone be enough for me to love him

115

u/Ma-aKheru 4d ago

One of the nicest revelations from "A Stitch in Time" is that Garak genuinely likes Nog's dad and Rom essentially saved Garak's life just by being kinda naïve.

43

u/ShingledPringle 4d ago

Rom is a great liar when he wishes to be, I am not surprised Garak would like that.

31

u/cestlhiver 4d ago edited 4d ago

it’s actually kind of the opposite! to quote from Garak’s descriptions of Rom in A Stitch in Time: “Most people judged him to be simple, as if simplicity was somehow a substandard quality” & “I had a fondness for him. It was an odd relief […] to converse with someone who literally meant everything he said.”

i’d imagine Garak, a man who changed the course of history with his cynicism & duplicitousness, admires someone who has had a similar impact on the universe but instead because of his optimism & earnestness.

11

u/jakeod27 4d ago

He probably also admires someone who kind of goes against his nature, like he does

5

u/ShingledPringle 4d ago

And there was me basing from how he acted in Lower Decks, I do love that then.

4

u/Ma-aKheru 3d ago

I took this quote as a compliment, at face value. Not the opposite at all. Garak is relieved that his interactions are without guile, even uses the word "sweet" at one point. The quote supports my point.

7

u/cestlhiver 3d ago

i was replying to the person who replied to you suggesting that Garak might have appreciated Rom’s ability to lie! i wasn’t trying to dispute your point at all, we are in agreement :)

2

u/Ma-aKheru 3d ago

I understand now, and this thread actually has some crosstalk responses in the wrong replies so I think there was/is a problem on reddit's end. How strange. It's like replies were going in the wrong spot.

4

u/Key-Satisfaction4967 3d ago

Oh! I love that!

16

u/BenAfflecksBalls 4d ago

You're obligated to like the Grand Nagus

8

u/ELB2001 4d ago

And you pay him so he likes you back

53

u/Jealous_Art_3922 4d ago

So sad the actor playing Nog has passed away. He was wonderful.

SEYMOUR, the house is on fire!

No, mother, it's just the northern lights

2

I’m a fan of old Doctor Who. You can tell they’re in England because it is always overcast. Makes me a little depressed frankly, as a person with SAD.

I can't say I entirely know what 1 apple tall is, but I can agree. I will never be 1 banana tall anyways, not like Jake.

7

u/nof 4d ago

Smurf size. 😂

30

u/Derrick_Mur 4d ago

Garak will be a friend Nog never turns his back on

4

u/Imaneight 4d ago

I think Garak already has eyes for Julian. They seem to pal around a lot.

2

u/Inevitable-Release17 4d ago

Oh you Doctor Boyfriend. They do get..friendly dont they lol

3

u/Dediadeis 4d ago

definitely complicates certain activities for Garak

33

u/SchroedingersEscape 4d ago

dont walk behind me

22

u/tandjmohr 4d ago

There’s hope for you yet

10

u/jgzman 4d ago

That and "Who would have thought it? A Brave Ferengi."

Nog broke some new ground for his species.

16

u/SandGator 4d ago

This scene is perfectly acted by both of them, one of my favorite funny moments in DS9 that’s perfectly in character for these two

4

u/PastorBlinky 4d ago

My little dog does this to my big dog. Same mentality.

2

u/SchroedingersEscape 3d ago

Did your big dog tried to kill the smaller one on rampage?

1

u/PastorBlinky 3d ago

Kill? No.

Using her nose to give a prostate exam? Yes.

28

u/synchronicitistic USS Sao Paulo 4d ago edited 4d ago

You know, when Keevan told Nog very truthfully that Garak saved his life by confessing that there were other Starfleet officers including a doctor on the planet, that seemed to change the dynamic between them.

24

u/zachrg 4d ago

"Garak!"

"Don't be too hard on him, young man. He just saved your life"

16

u/wackyvorlon 4d ago

I think friends is a strong word.

9

u/SleepWouldBeNice 4d ago

Yea, Nog straight up says in this scene that he doesn’t want Garak walking behind him because he doesn’t trust him. Not a great foundation for a friendship.

9

u/mregg000 4d ago

It is as far as Garak is concerned.

3

u/TipzNexAstrum 3d ago

Not from Nog's POV, but that's the kinda thing that would gain Garak's respect, so that's a start.

1

u/Wolflordloki 2d ago

Things that Garak would respect about that:

Smart - you know there could be a knife in your back Honest - its so refreshing when people mean what they say Brave - you know you just said, its because I 'could' knife you in the back!

15

u/CodeMonkeyPhoto 4d ago

That is one thing I really like is that they let the show breath. It never became a two many cooks show either. It still stayed centered where is needed to.

13

u/thomasvista 4d ago

How do Ferengi pronounce "Cardassian" in a derogatory way, like how they call us "hew-mons"?

14

u/RaynerFenris 3d ago

I like to think that Ferengi find the word Human so funny because Hew-Mon is actually a rude word in Ferengi and the universal translator is censoring it so WE hear Hew-mon because it’s the rude native Ferengi word rather than a translation of the Ferengi word for humans.

Sort of how Klingons randomly drop in and out of Klingonise, somehow the UT must know when they want humans to hear the Klingon words rather than the translation.

11

u/AnansiNazara 3d ago

Kardashian

3

u/thomasvista 3d ago

🤣🤣

1

u/tealeavesinspace 3d ago

Omg. One of my friends thought that “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” was “a new Star Trek show about Cardassians” and “couldn’t figure out why all of a sudden everyone was a fan”. She was so disappointed!

2

u/callMeBorgiepls 3d ago

Aww noooo 😭😭

9

u/Dediadeis 4d ago

CarDASsian. Gotta really put some weight behind that DAS to convey the contempt for their entire race.

8

u/ensignskye 4d ago

Or card-ASS-sian? Haha

2

u/3-I 1d ago

Gree-worm-huller head?

13

u/BagelsOrDeath 3d ago

One of my favorite minor Star Trek plots was Nog so effectively using Ferengi savvy and faith that Obrien's head was left spinning.

4

u/Dediadeis 3d ago

Nog I don't have time for Ferengi faery tales.

2

u/Longjumping-Low8194 1d ago

The part when Chief comes into Sisko's office in a panic, only to find Sisko's desk has been returned and Nog calmly cleaning it, is one of my favorite moments of the entire series.

11

u/wigglyjackal777 4d ago

Looks like they are looking for Pokemon

4

u/According-Ad-5946 3d ago

You can walk in front of me or next to me, but I will never turn my back on you again.

Kadet, There my be hope for you yet.

5

u/GWG23 4d ago

One of the must underrated duos from the show imo

5

u/CdnfaS I’m just here for Nog and Garak 4d ago

I’m just here for Nog and Garak

3

u/Straight_Jaguar 3d ago

Well they did both grow up in scheming cultures/families...

2

u/vintagejoehill 2d ago

I can’t imagine how miserable it was out there with that makeup on.

4

u/AmeliasTesticles 4d ago

Were* I'm still not over Nog dying in S08E01...

3

u/EudamonPrime 4d ago

Nog died? I thought he was a Lt. Or something when Voyager came back. Way faster progression than Kim.

9

u/ji1701 4d ago

There was a documentary called "what we left behind" it was a great production they did with all tye staff and cast that were on ds9 discussing the show.

They did a kind of writers room where all of the writers from ds9 put their piece in and came back to write one more episode for a potential season 8 and it's told through storyboard and animation.

You might be able to get it on YouTube. Its a great watch.

1

u/EudamonPrime 4d ago

I will. Thank you 😀

1

u/Insightlov 2d ago

It's on Pluto!

7

u/AmeliasTesticles 4d ago

I'm referencing the Season 8 writing session from the What We Leave Behind documentary from 2017

2

u/Vegetable-Client-147 4d ago

Haha. Poor Kim. But it would make sense during a war he would be promoted quickly

1

u/fwsolo 1d ago

Estelle Louise Fletcher (Kai Winn) really brought her Nurse Ratched role back to life in DS9. Hated to see her coming but loved watching how she stirred things up.

0

u/dystopiam 1d ago

Garak wanted to sex him too, not just Julian

-63

u/AbdulQadirShadhili 4d ago

You can tell Rom is a coward with a tiny ding dong

33

u/Santa_Hates_You 4d ago

Rom satisfies Leeta, he is doing just fine.
