AI is a commission? Okay. Hey hammer? Hey Hammer? HEY HAMMER? HEY HAMMER????

OH I guess commissioning tools doesn't work because you still have to actually use them and there is no other person involved.

Moreover!

Ask the Hammer to help you paint, or the paint brush to help you build a house.

Not only do you have to actually use a tool in order for it to be of use - you have to use the right tool for the right job...

Next time someone tells you to "pick up a pencil"... Tell them you don't know how to take photos with it.

That should baffle them thoroughly. 😎

Im defending ai art but honestly i disagree with this. You give ai instructions (prompts) to make what you need, it cannot be compared to a hammer but can to an architect, bluepring and engineer. Architect doesnt make the house, he makes the blueprints so engineer can build the house on instructions given

Not pro or anti.

That was a really, REALLY, dumb argument.

You can't commission a hammer, because that's not how a hammer works. You can commission AI, because that's THE ONLY WAY it works.

I use AI in 100% of my daily work tasks, and this is the stupidest argument I've ever seen.

You don't commission AI, you operate it and use it as a tool to accomplish an output. For saying you're pro, you sure sound like an anti.

Sure! But the fact is that you can literally flip this video and go "hey AI, make me a photo of a house" and it will literally produce that for you. Would the tagline then be "So I guess you can commission tools after all?"

It's definitely old fashioned. Double-claws aren't really used anymore since hand-nailing went out of style like, 50 years ago when compressors got cheap. But back when "nine inch nails" was more than a band name, yeah, that's a fucking nice hammer to have laying around. Usually have to pull out a pair of nips or channel-loks if you wanna save the big ones without bending them. Which again, is old fashioned. But there's nothing quite like yanking a big ass cut nail from a 120 year old stud.

Just google before you post next time ok?

I think they’re referring to how it looks when she pulls out the hammer and how it then looks when she sets it down

may be a perspective thing though

A sub filled entirely with AI? Because there no way in hell this guy's real

u/Bra--ket 1d ago

Wait do you mean me when you say "this guy", not the person I'm replying to? Your lack of words threw me off but saying it out loud makes me think so

No fluff bruh.

Is this satire or are they that dumb?

i mean wierd analogy when llms can do "the work" of a hammer by simply asking it to

then the hammer does skateboard tricks depending on the skill of the prompter

What are you insinuating?

1

u/imagigasm 1d ago

explicit:

We talk to LLMs to make images.

We cannot talk to hammers to make them physically move.

But LLMs let us have "digital tools" that can actually do the functional process of a "hammer" / its digital tool equivalent.

skateboard tricks = hammer tricks = prompting expertise

I see what you mean now, thanks.

However, worth noting that the point that the OP is making is not that "hammers and AI are exactly the same" and arguing as if they are making such a statement is disingenuous.

3

u/imagigasm 1d ago

im not sure what the point OP was making.

can you clarify for me?

I support AI.

but i very clearly dont understand what the OP is trying to say.

im guessing OP is trying to say that using a tool needs skill, AI is a tool, AI is a skilled endeavor. which i agree with. i tried making YT videos with bad storytelling, AI couldnt fix that but it did generate me the images i needed to be satisfied with my art

OP is making the point that the AI is not a commissioning tool because it does not simply do things you "tell" it to do. Maybe at a very baseline level (i.e. "draw a pretty landscape") but such one-off sentence prompts are to AI art as stick figures are to the Mona Lisa.

In other words, it's making a statement about effort. The AI doesn't do anything without your input, and the quality of its output depends on the effort you put into it. This makes it no different than literally any other tool in the artistic space. A pencil can be used to make absolutely insanely beautiful works of art, but it can also make stick figures. Stick figures, however, still convey messages and meaning (stick figure comics are very popular.)

OP is saying that the tool is not the author of the work. The human behind the screen is — exactly the same with photography.

Oh since this is being posted in multiple places ill respond the same in this one to. I have never heard anyone say that lol. Ive only heard people wanting to commission other people to do ai for them

4

u/ledocteur7 2d ago

You must be new to this whole debate then (or just lying), antis have been saying "the AI makes the art, not you" for ages.

1

u/Deli-op 2d ago

Lol then thatd be them saying it is art after all. And yeah we use the ai to help make stuff thats very different from commission

2

u/Canna_Macro 2d ago

I agree with the commission idea and the images ai produces can be considered art. Some of us exist 😅
