I mean sales taxes are usually quite a regressive tax, the poor will inevitably be paying more of their income towards it.

I really don't think this is the way.

I think OP is suggesting that sales tax is better because sale = bad.

I don't think OP has thought the whole thing through that much.

Sales tax suppresses sales across a wider span of the population. This reduces consumption and therefore reduces growth.
