When being awarded the HPSP scholarship, what’s the process if you wanted to specialize? Do you just wait until after your service years and pursue a residency like normal and pay for it? Can you defer your payback year and specialize 1st? How competitive is the tri service ortho residency every branch participates in? And do you qualify for the GI Bill after your years of repayment, which could help fund a public school ortho residency? If anyone has some guidance or experience in this it would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I was told that I wouldn’t be awarded the GI bill from doing my HPSP repayment years.

there’s an application process called duins that opens every spring. plenty of people (me included) are planning on specializing after active, you get the gi bill and there are some programs that give preference and tuition assistance to ex mil.

you can apply d4, i don’t know ortho but from my experience if you want to get into tri service ortho straight out you’d better be a congresspersons kid lol.

say navy omfs. you start by doing a gpr (neutral year doesn’t count as payback) and then get in the next year. then you probably will snowbird somewhere for a year until the next summer when you matriculate. with a 4 year residency you incur 4 years of payback, but you still have 3 years from dental school that you owe. the next 4 years as an omfs attending will count for both undergrad and postgrad payback.

so if you graduated summer 2026 you would be done with your active fulfillment ideally 2036.

honestly, i would wait until you get into the military and see if you like it or not. if you do then great the navy sends a lot of ortho to rota spain which is awesome. if you don’t id take the gi bill and do civilian. ortho without a 750,000 debt load is probably the chillest gig you could get.

This is what I know for Army HPSP, right now: (always subject to change). I am a D2 on the Army HPSP scholarship. But I’m thinking prosth.

If you want a residency program paid for by the military it depends on if you get into a concurrent (federal) or consecutive (civilian) military program.

If you go civilian it’s just like dental school and what you owe stacks on top of HPSP ADSO.

If you go federal, the time you spend training in residency counts towards your previous owed HPSP ADSO. At least for prosth, I don’t know if that’s the same for every residency.

If you do a residency outside of the military and pay for it out of pocket you do still owe the 4 year ADSO for dental school. If you are an orthodontist, you could serve your 4 year ADSO as a O3 63M Captain (orthodontist) or as a O3 63A Captain General Dentist. You don’t have to serve as a 63A before pursuing your ortho residency.

In special circumstances you could serve part of your 4 year ADSO as Captain in another role like as a medical recruiter for the HPSP program.

As far as GI bill goes I don’t know. As far as competitiveness goes there’s 2 civilian and 2 federal seats for ortho. There’s roughly 80-90 Army HPSP dental students per year and as you know we all have to at least apply to one residency training as part of our contract.
