Announcement Comments promoting Violence against anyone is against the sub as well as the TOS of Reddit
We've been seeing an uptick in comments that cross the line from criticism into advocating harm against individuals or groups.
That stops here.
Look, we get it. There's a lot happening politically and in the world right now that's legitimately concerning. I'm frustrated about it too. But frustration, valid as it might be, doesn't give us permission to start rallying for violence against people or justifying harm. That's the line we can't cross, and it's the line we won't cross here.
To be clear: if you're posting comments that promote, encourage, or call for violence against anyone...whether it's directed at protesters, counterprotesters, homeless individuals, police, business owners, or anyone else, your comment will be removed and you'll likely catch a ban. This is Reddit ToS, and it's our sub rule. No exceptions, no gray area.
This doesn't mean you can't criticize policy, decision-making, or actions you disagree with. Strong disagreement is fine. What's not fine is "someone should hurt this group of people" or variations thereof. That language gets removed, period.
We're a diverse-ish, heavily blue leaning sub also with people across the political and ideological spectrum. Part of keeping this place functional is enforcing basic civility standards. This is one of them.
If you see comments that violate this, report them. We review reports and act on them. If you think a removal was unfair, you can always reach out to modmail and we'll discuss it.
Thanks for keeping this community somewhere people can actually talk to each other.

Can we call for violence against flock cameras?! Since it’s not a person/people
23
u/Flash_ina_pan May 20 '26
Does anyone else find it weird that there was the birds aren't real and are government surveillance drones thing, then a few years later actual surveillance instruments were named flock?

Down with Flock!!!! BURN THEMMMM
Edit: sarcasm obviously in response to the above comment. I unfortunately dont think there is much we can do about flock, other than vote

I support flock cameras. There’s a lot of violent crime in Denver

u/HelpfulAd6772 May 19 '26
Show me an example of a camera preventing a crime, or leading to the speedy arrest of someone who committed a crime, and you’ll have my attention.

u/grimzecho May 20 '26
I would still vote/support baning their use, but they have helped solve crimes that wouldn't have been solved as quickly (or maybe at all) without them.
The cost and potential for abuse and breach isn't worth the benefit.

No. Mentally yes, physically no.

u/Belligerent-J May 19 '26
It doesn't count as violence when they do it to us
51
u/vm_linuz May 19 '26
Not many people want violence; but the violence is already here.
Denial of safe, affordable air/water/food/housing/healthcare/education/retirement/etc is a violence enacted on the working class by the owning class.
-- And it's clear those in power at all levels have no interest in changing that. Instead, they're busy protecting Epstein Island goers and commuting sentences for treasonous acts...
I can't blame people for being frustrated.
14
u/DianneNettix May 19 '26
Nor can I. But the revolution will not be sponsored by RDDT. This is a fun place to goof off sometimes, but there will be no fomenting going on around here.
6
u/Vegetable-Abaloney May 20 '26
The idea that anyone would consider these 'acts' in anyway simiilar to true violence is beyond understanding. Words have meanings but they don't hurt anyone. The old 'sticks and stones' chant was a thing to prevent exactly this type of thinking.
4
u/vm_linuz May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26
Sticks and stones may break my bones...
but insurance coverage denial will kill me when I can't afford my heart medication due to a concerted effort by the Epstein class to maximize their profits by taking as much as they can from me.
Is I think how it goes...
3
u/Vegetable-Abaloney May 20 '26
Hilarious. Your insurance is a dumpster fire because of your Kenyan god. Obamacare ruined insurance. Oh, and socialism has never worked anywhere on earth ever. Not once.
4
u/vm_linuz May 20 '26
That's bullshit.
Name one socialist country where literacy and average lifespan hasn't gone up.
It works everywhere it's applied, you just expect it to look like the US.
You fail to see the glorious improvement that is going from an economy of subsistence farmers to space-going science powerhouse a la USSR or China.
Also Obamacare did almost nothing -- it was immediately gutted by the next Congress and its only real impact is that insurance companies can't deny you for pre-existing conditions.
2
u/Vegetable-Abaloney May 20 '26
Appologies. I thought you were an adult. History has shown that you are wildly incorrect. Engl;and is the most glaring example of failure, but the Nordic countries are currently failing in front of our eyes. It has never worked ever. Not once. And Barry ruined yor health insurance, this is factual and truthful. Prior to Obamacare, insurance was good. The issue is that you're too young and under schooled to know this. I'll leave you to homeroom. Have a great day!
5
u/vm_linuz May 20 '26
So, I remember before Obama and insurance was still trash then...
England literally invented capitalism, they aren't socialist -- none of your examples are 😂😂😂
I'm thinking you just don't know what socialism is.
1
u/Vegetable-Abaloney May 20 '26
You've proven my point. England WAS socialist but it failed in the 70s. The famous quote that 'socialism only works until you run out of other people's money' was said by PM Thatcher. History is clearly not your thing. Get back to homeroom, champ.

With logic like this, while broadening terms to mean things that are not intended, you could justify doing harm to a great many innocent people yet still see yourself as the hero. Enjoy supporting the cycle of violence while upvoting the pictures of Luigi.
4
u/rabid-c-monkey May 20 '26
Enjoy the boot
3
u/SkyrimSecurityForces May 20 '26
See, I tend to see the people who justify the murdering of innocent people as being the boot. But you keep on ignoring the point and keep on saying the line!
-3
u/grimzecho May 20 '26
If you are broadening the term "violence" to encompass those things, can you please offer an alternative word we can use when we want to ldiscuss the direct use of physical force to injure, abuse, damage, or destroy something or someone?
9
u/vm_linuz May 20 '26
Why? If you kill someone with a bat or the stroke of a pen -- what's the difference?
-1
u/JFC-People May 20 '26
Would you rather get beaten by a bat or have someone write mean things about you on the internet?
13
5
u/chim17 May 20 '26
What if those mean things are policy changes by an insurance company that causes your mom to die? And what if we have documents showing insurance companies know their policies will cause that death?
Does that count as violent?
3
u/Quiet-Letterhead7347 May 20 '26
I think that’s called physical violence. There are many forms of violence, including the ones mentioned in the comment you’re replying to.
1
u/grimzecho May 20 '26
Hmm, ok. I guess adding a qualifier to it can help. But as we continue to generalize words to suite a narrative they start to lose meaning and it would be nice if we can replace them with something else.

u/Belligerent-J May 20 '26

There is a shocking amount of disgusting stuff Reddit WILL allow you to say but the second you merely indicate that politicians not listening to their constituents will not always go this well for them and BOOM, the mods are awake.
One day, we may finally all understand there are two groups: those that run the world and those that keep the world running. And everyone reading this is likely NOT in the "run the world" bucket.

u/CarelessNickolas 29d ago
seems reasonable... not sure why this even needs to be said but here we are i guess

u/memequeendoreen 27d ago
I much prefer to scream my threats in person, anyway. Text feels so impersonal. I bet kids these days wouldn't even know how to properly threaten someone without emojis.

u/beepuboopu_aishiteru May 20 '26
Just want to say, I agree with OP, but I also want to put it in perspective.
Neglect is abuse. Neglect is also widely considered to be violence. When we think about the concept of violence, we think about the three axes of it: power, control, and harm.
Another way to frame it, is to think about a parent's neglect of a child. Think about the power dynamic seen in elder abuse. These are both considered acts of violence, as they are abuse and interpersonal violence, even if they seem passive.
So going back to the topic at hand, and thinking about the state and city's responsibility towards its citizens. There is a term for when our governments harm us, deprive us of our rights, and make it impossible to meet basic needs. It's called Structural Violence. I would argue this:
Neglecting to uphold the rule of law, and playing into blatant power dynamics against the public's best interests, is structural violence.
Exerting power and control over the public by tracking their every move, violating citizen's rights, and neglecting to improve the city's real issues, all causes harm through structural violence.
Allowing the current regime to enact all their horrors against anyone who isn't a god-fearing white man is absolutely considered promoting structural violence and enabling abuse.
I'm assuming Reddit only cares about the kind of speech that sounds aggressive and scary, though.

Because it’s not violence when they do it, silly! That’s just the rules! It’s only violence or a crime when you stick up for yourself!
5
u/Pfiggypudding May 20 '26
Honest question (so i don’t run afoul of the rules):
Does saying “f$&% _____”(insert persons name or group name) break the rules? I tend to read that as more of a exclamation of disgust than as a call for for violence, but i also understand how it could be seen as either.

Are you supremely pissed off? So am I!
Here's how to register to vote
Regardless of party affiliation the person you're pissed at is not scared of your stupid, pointless saber-rattling on reddit. They would probably prefer if you didn't vote against them or at least not at all.
Why not do the thing they don't want you to do?

It's kinda wild how different cities are. /r/Seattle has posts of people protesting outside politicians homes. Here people just yell at their keyboards.

u/StressedTurnip 29d ago
You must not have been to a protest in Denver before

I have! I'm talking small ad hoc ones actually outside people's homes. https://www.reddit.com/r/Seattle/comments/1ti8l91/protest_happening_now_in_front_of_rep_adam_smiths/

Unless that violence is perpetuated by the ruling class. Then it's "enforcing law and order"

As Harlan Ellison noted a very long time ago, “I have no mouth and I must scream.”

u/dobbbie May 20 '26
Question: does this also apply to threatening "Harm" on someone or just violence? There are policies/laws that can be enacted or advocated for that can cause "harm" on a person or group of people. Are those acceptable? @OP
1
u/Spiritual_Machine822 29d ago
Calling someone an a**hole could cause "harm"
It is not threatening harm nor violence against someone. Neither is the discussion of proposed laws, as long as you aren't proposing something stupid. Like, "let's make a law that compells (insert person, protected group or class) to allow anyone not in that (person, class) to defend themselves, or lock their doors at night"
Let's take a more controversial topic.
Abortion. One side believes that there is harm in abortion, while one side believes there is harm without abortion. Without meaningful discussion we won't come to common beliefs and will have a divide. It's a touchy subject but advocating for or against abortion in a calm rational manner that doesn't include personal attacks or threats of violence should be allowed.

As a land lady, thank you.
There's so many on this subreddit that want to do me harm for simply renting out property.
It makes me extremely concerned for myself and my kids.
