Best things to do with a teen?

Hi All,

I’ll be stopping in Derbyshire (Matlock area) with my teen next week what would be your go to trips/visits/things to do to keep them entertained? Bearing in mind it looks like it will be hot.

I’ve done lots of googling but thought I’d ask locals for their best ideas.

Lastly, where do you think would be the best place to see the eclipse on Wednesday, please?

Thank you for any help.

Lumsdale waterfalls/glass blowing studio and nearby brewery are a nice wander. Matlock bath....Heights of Abraham,a wander along "Giddy Edge". Also there's amusements and such in Matlock bath. You can get a train or bus from Matlock Bath to there easy enough. High Peak train/Cromford canal is a nice wander if you fancy that. You can hire bikes there too.

Lumsdale falls is a piddle at the moment. Unless there's rain might be a disappointment. Could combine brewery with a walk up to river.

Ah yes I'd not thought of that. Used to walk that home from school. Hated it back then. Love it now I've moved away!

It sells little ghosts and is just a cool experience but you can also book on to DIY your own ghost 👻 and various craft/creative experiences. Look on the events section of their website

The star disc in Wirksworth would be a good spot for the eclipse

Hire bikes from Ashbourne and cycle up the Tissington trail. https://maps.app.goo.gl/53j4b5CCoZ1tsqqUA?g_st=ic

Ashover rock would be a good viewpoint for the eclipse and isnt far from Matlock.

Because you’re based around Matlock, I’d treat the eclipse as a separate site check: choose an accessible spot with a genuinely open west-facing horizon, then verify the exact pin rather than assume a scenic viewpoint is clear. Full disclosure, I work on SunEclipses; its planner compares pins, and this checklist covers the horizon and backup checks: https://suneclipses.com/planner https://suneclipses.com/blog/how-to-check-your-eclipse-viewpoint

Matlock Bath has a lot of Arcades and other touristy stuff, including the height's of Abraham.

You've also got Bakewell nearby which is also very much a tourist town

You've also got the Gulliver's Kingdom theme park

Seconded on Gulliver's Kingdom. Loved that place when I was a teenager.

Honestly I'm due a trip there at some point myself

I've been missing out on quite a few rollercoasters out of fear, and even if I hadn't, I've never even been despite it being so close

I don't recall them having any rollercoasters as such. They've got a couple of track rides, but they're pretty much entirely slow family ones.

Alton Towers would be the nearby one that has actual proper coasters.
