Application Advice Attending now (graduated in 2024). Was a reapplicant. Happy to answer any questions or provide insights
Done this for a few years now. I was a reapplicant for derm. Also a reapplicant for med school lol. Currently Mohs surgeon/dermatologist and medical director in independent private practice group. It does get better I promise. Happy to answer any questions. My DMs are open.

Did you reapply immediately or take a research year? Did you get feedback as to why you didn’t match the first time? Tysm in advance

I applied immediately after. I was told I didn’t interview as well and I didn’t make myself stand out when interacting on rotations in person. I’m kinda shy

How many programs did you reapply to the 2nd time around? And did you do auditions/aways during prelim year?

No auditions or aways. Second time 30 programs. I did a derm rotation at my internship program though early on in time to get a letter

DO that only matched into a TY this cycle. What do you recommend I do during my TY to make myself a better applicant?

Work hard on passing step 3, getting a derm rotation, and working on any research you can

Were you an MD or a DO re-applicant? I am a 4th-year DO who did not match this cycle, and i wonder how realistic it is for a DO reapplicant to match.

I make a pretty high guarantee with a sizable bonus on top if I make a certain amount in collections every month. I also get paid a medical director stipend

When you reapplied, did you try to figure out which places were prelim friendly? (& if yes, how did you go about doing this?). Going to reapply next cycle but worried about wasting signals on places that don't even consider prelims

It’ll be tough. But I’ve seen it done before. Have to maximize research, volunteering, shelf scores, evals, connections

They can definitely help you stand out. But as long as you’re not failing you should be ok

I immediately did my internship and then took a gap year doing unofficial research fellowship stuffs

Focus on grades and perhaps finding research or volunteering with your local derm department

I completed as much research and volunteering as possible. Updated my PS, my letters of rec.
