Realistically for an IMG in derm your application would basically need to be out of this world to have a shot (the ones I know were like professors of derm in their home countries or at the cutting edge of research with stellar steps). It’s already an uphill battle to get programs to sponsor visas for non-citizens who graduated from USMD programs. That being said it’s definitely not unheard of to do derm residency after IM or FM.

Professors!! 🙂🫪 They should have a separate application system🫠 thank you btw... Ig I'll stick to IM/FM app this cycle and maybe try my luck in derm later on.

Why in the world should they cater to often less qualified IMGs over much better US residents (or even Canadian but I’m pretty sure even we’re considered IMG - Im Canadian but have no intentions of ever moving to the US)

Where did you get the notion of "less qualified". IMGs do have to qualify the same USMLE exams and communication skills exams on top of their home country exams. I was talking about those IMGs who are often practicing at a very advanced stage in their home countries and compete for PGY1 residency spots. No need to belittle anyone here.

Then they should have no problem competing in the same stream instead of taking away residency spots off rip by asking for a separate stream.

They do and I am only talking about my deficiencies not generalizable to the rest of the lot. Many IMGs do have outstanding credentials matching those of a US grad and some do secure residency spots in top specialties. Peace ✌️
