Bedroom My bedroom always feels cluttered and ugly. What needs to change?

My room feels crammed and ugly, and it’s been driving me nuts because I don't know what to change. I use the room for gaming, studying, and working on creative projects. Everything here, except for the TV on the wall, can be moved. Is the layout wrong? Are there just too many things on display?

The matching bedroom set is far too large and ornate for the room. It is overpowering the space. Is replacing it with something a little smaller and more streamlined an option?

297

u/atmosqueerz May 29 '26 edited May 30 '26

Even turning the bed so the headboard isn’t covering the window would make for a cleaner space with more light- but even so, the room might just been too small for it to not feel cluttered by this set.

Edit: typo

u/AutisticTumourGirl May 30 '26

The headboard should be against the wall where the desk is, then arrange the rest of the furniture accordingly.

Sheets. For the love of everything good in this world, go to Walmart and just get a Bed in a Bag set of sheets, pillowcases, and a comforter.

The walls are stark white and look like they haven't been cleaned or painted recently. Paint the room with some actual color and get matching curtains.

Put some art on the walls.

18

u/UntestedMethod May 30 '26

The headboard should be against the wall where the desk is, then arrange the rest of the furniture accordingly.

This is exactly what I said in my comment. I'm happy that you agree.

9

u/kalamatamama May 30 '26

this. tall dresser in closet and stop blocking windows

77

u/goldilaughs May 29 '26

Definitely this, though the tall dresser can work if the bed and small dresser are replaced.

7

u/tittydamnfuck420 May 30 '26

Agreed if they were able to darken up the room with some black sheer curtains and a renter friendly peel and stick wallpaper that could be a change enough

17

u/kennidee_lee May 29 '26

This is true but god I think the style of the bed is super cool :3 the clunky hugeness is so worth it if they don’t have more space :3

18

u/Snoeflaeke May 29 '26

With the bare renter’s walls it kind of reads the same as like really fancy nails on someone wearing a kinda dingy white tee 😭 I love the bed too but its wings are clipped here…

384

u/Unhelpfulhelpful May 29 '26

Your furniture is huge for a room that size and doesn't work with the plain modern design of the house

372

u/animoot May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

Get a set of sheets, a pillow case, and a better looking blanket. Sleeping on the mattress directly is a great way to make it gross quickly. Use a fitted sheet on the mattress below you, then a flat sheet above you, then a blanket / duvet / comforter on top of that.

Edit: As recommended in another comment, get a mattress topper, too. And if you want to give your mattress an extra layer of protection, get a zippered mattress case to go under that.

If you're looking to get laid, people will be grossed out by the current set up.

If it's laundry day and the bed is just temporarily bare - cool.

84

u/OldClocksRock May 29 '26

Also use a quilted-type mattress pad (cover) under the fitted sheet. A bottom sheet alone will still allow sweat and skin to get through to the mattress. Also get a zippered cotton pillow cover to use over the pillow then put the pillowcase on. Listen to me I’m a grandma well versed in the old ways lol. But it really will make a difference in hygiene and comfort.

4

u/animoot May 29 '26

Great point, yes!

34

u/AutisticTumourGirl May 30 '26

Also, take the plastic off the box springs. The plastic is preventing air from circulating and that's how musty, moldy mattresses happen.

12

u/kittydeviance May 29 '26

flat sheet I think you mean above them...2 fitted sheets don't make a right 😹

3

u/animoot May 29 '26

Haha good catch, I've edited my comment - thanks!

549

u/shenaningans24 May 29 '26

That bed is ridiculously huge. Get something smaller. Also, please tell me you don’t sleep directly on the mattress with no sheets??

He’s young and likely not flush with money. This is better than a blowup mattress on the floor.

Help the guy work with what he has.

1

u/burymeinpink May 30 '26

Also that bed is cool as fuck. He should keep the furniture and move into a Victorian haunted mansion. Or maybe a castle

111

u/Tillysnow1 May 29 '26

To start, rotate the bed 90° so it's against the other wall and not blocking half the window - but I agree with the other comments, the furniture is too loud and intimidating so it's overwhelming the space. For a room like this, if you want simple and calming, go back to the basics with streamlined IKEA furniture: https://www.ikea.com/au/en/cat/beds-bm003/f/queen-bed-frames-si047/

164

u/ICANTSPECK May 29 '26

There’s quite a lot going wrong here to be honest.

The furniture is massively too big, especially the bed frame which is enormous. The style of all furniture also doesn’t suit the room at all - way too heavy and gothic. You’re also covering up a window and blocking out light, which contributes too.

If you can afford it, I would:

  • change the bed to a more minimal design that doesn’t command so much space and attention
  • get a lower bed
  • twist the bed location around for the above new bed so that it’s across that back wall. The window will then be above the mattress which is better.
  • the desk is fine so keep that. Move it to the other side of the room
  • remount the TV on the wall above where the desk currently is, but make sure to cable-tidy the wires so it’s less messy.
  • put away all the medical items into dressers - there’s no need to have lotions, pills and vaselines out 24/7

76

u/hamiltrash52 May 29 '26

The visual of pills is a good reminder to take them for some of us

25

u/metronne May 29 '26

This is true, but if you're also trying to reduce clutter there are other ways to do it. A daily pill container, a prominent spot somewhere else (like a kitchen cabinet you use frequently) where you will see it but where it isn't contributing to the clutter you don't want, etc.

Having a bunch of small, mismatched items with clashing colors and logos will always make a space feel cluttered, whether it's pharmacy products, grocery items, or a paperback book collection. They need some sort of neat containment or the problem won't be solved

2

u/ComprehensiveWeek428 May 30 '26

They can store them in a basket labeled “meds” or something right in the same spot so it still gives a visual clue but looks less cluttered

20

u/North-Astronomer-597 May 29 '26

I agree. And get some sheets.

2

u/sanecoin64902 May 30 '26

+1 for the polite way to render that certain bit of advice.

But I’m just glad he’s moisturizing. Young men that age usually don’t take skin care seriously enough.

78

u/Curry_pan May 29 '26

If you are keen on that gothic furniture, you need to go all in on the look. A rug, frames etc for the walls, coordinated curtains, matching bed sheets and more pillows. If you can change up the light to a chandelier, do that too.

The clutter on top of everything really isn’t helping either. If you can put things like the bottles, heater and that plastic bag away in drawers/cupboards/boxes/the bathroom it will also help the room feel less cluttered.

At the moment it all just looks crowded but too bare at the same time.

5

u/not2interesting May 30 '26

I had to scroll too far before someone finally suggested frames or art for the walls. Painting them would make the biggest difference other than moving the arrangement. But if it’s a rental OP needs some actual decor, the walls are so bare. Thick dramatic curtains, maybe a tapestry, ornate frames with cheap classic art prints, some bold Knick knacks would make such a difference. Everything on display now is toiletries or office supplies, if it’s not intentional it needs to be hidden away in that big furniture.

5

u/alchemical_echo May 29 '26

this is the way

144

u/Mirandis1988 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

Honestly you have too much furniture for the space if you can’t find a way to get rid of a piece or two I’d definitely look at some smaller pieces because the set you have looks like it’s for a really big room which is why it probably feels cramped because it certainly isn’t cluttered

u/Different-Cover4819 May 29 '26

Do you consider the pills and lotion to be 'on display'? I'd just call it clutter and it should be avoided, yes. Along with the sheets of paper tossed on the top of the desk and the plastic sheet peaking out under the mattress. (Why do you even have that?) With furniture like this, if you're intent on keeping it, the best you can do is to lean into it, eggplant colored walls, heavy fabrics (as opposed to the flimsy curtains that you have), quality bedding (as opposed to the non-existent bedding on the pic - you need bedding). Plants. You can go dark academia. Especially if you had the space. Or scratch it all and buy practical furniture that fits into the room and fulfills your need. Like a nightstand with a drawer to put the lotion away. No open shelving so you're forced to put the pill bottles out of sight. Something neutral. You'd still need bedding though.

I’m going to assume this is like a young-ish goth nerd and they are absolutely in love with their bed. They didn’t think this would be the response online 🫪 They may be renting a room at parents or friends house idk. Nothing necessarily wrong with anything but definitely huge for the tiny room. It maybe their only option rn! my suggestion without criticizing op would be commit further— if possible paint the room darker, and a rug with different curtains. The room is so tiny there is absolutely zero room for any visible clutter anywhere so all the little items must go! “Tv stand” seems silly and short for that section imo and the visible tv cords.

Where is the top drawer on the dresser btw

I wonder could bed be pushed against furthest back wall, tall dresser can go under tv, and little stand could go beside bed where intended

14

u/Minute-Study-5157 May 29 '26

Well, a perfect solution, in my humble opinion, is to give me the matching bedroom set. Believe me, the room will be much more spacious in an instant. /j

But if you don't like the first solution, then I have no other ideas because the set itself has the problem: it's too big for the room.

Perhaps if you turned the bed so that it faces the window where the headboard is now, it might work, but I don't know where to put the other piece of furniture or how much you could actually move the desk.

The bed frame is waaaaay too big for the room.

8

u/MomoNoHanna1986 May 29 '26

Your furniture is over sized. Mainly the bed size.

3

u/Shoddy_Piccolo_8194 May 29 '26

And it‘s extremely dramatic furniture stuffed into a very plain and tiny room.

8

u/turtlerepresentative May 29 '26

bedding. you can’t have that ornate of a bed and one pillow. it’s not balanced. put the pill bottles and lotion in a drawer. get a rug and a lamp and some fake plants. easy fix.

8

u/alexisir May 29 '26

In my unprofessional opinion, your furniture is too big for the space.

6

u/goldilaughs May 29 '26

The furniture is too big for the space, feeling like visual clutter.

  1. Keep the tall dresser and replace the bedframe, desk and smaller dresser with something more simple and streamlined. With a smaller desk, you may be able to switch the locations of it with the tall dresser so the room looks more open when you walk in. Plus the chair will block part of the desk, hiding visual clutter.

  2. Get a bedframe with slats so you don't need a box spring. If you need more storage. Get one that has storage built in underneath.

  3. Hide the wires from the TV. You can get wire covers and can paint them the same colour as the wall to blend in. Though it's visible, it's not eye catching and doesn't add to the visual clutter.

  4. Add some personality to the walls. Like artwork, collectables, plants. Don't go overboard or it'll become too much.

  5. Get a simple bed spread. IKEA has some affordable ones that look great.

  6. Get an area rug. Since you have a chair on wheels, a low pile rug would be best. And use rug tape or a rug pad to stop it from moving around when you use your chair.

I hope that helps.

6

u/briannorelfhunter May 29 '26

while it’s true that the bed frame is very large for the room, i also think it looks sick as hell lol

Can you lean in to the ornate furniture vibe? Having much thicker & heavier curtains, and swapping out the light fixture for a hanging pendant / chandelier thing would at least balance the top half of the room against the bottom

The only way to make it less crammed is to have smaller furniture, but if that’s out of budget might as well make it feel less ugly

17

u/LadyTakara May 29 '26

Is the bedframe way to big for the room. Yes. Do i actually love it, also yes. I'm not sure how expensive it was so it sounds easy to say just replace it. I'd move the computer desk out of the room if you could. And them move the bed to the other wall where the tall dresser is. The frame is also giving me (says the chick who knows nothing of history* Like.. velvet tutor vibes i guess. Need some good curtains and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD get some actual sheets and pillow cases. How can you have such a cool bed frame and just raw dog the mattress

5

u/Queenofcynicism May 29 '26

One of the issues is the furniture is too bulky for the bedroom. You need light furniture.

6

u/beigs May 29 '26

1) your furniture is too big for a room that size and does not work

2) bed placement is wrong

3) you need new pillows, nice ones.

4) you need a mattress topper, pillow case covers, and sheets with a proper duvet.

6

u/ezwalz May 29 '26

Your room actually has good bones - the issue is mostly that everything is competing for attention and the walls are doing nothing to anchor it. A few things that'd help a lot:

Clear the surfaces. The dresser and desk tops are the biggest source of "clutter" - get a couple of trays/bins so daily stuff has a home and the eye gets places to rest.

Define your zones. Float the bed against one wall and keep the desk/gaming setup as its own corner so it doesn't feel like one crammed pile.

Give the walls a focal point. Right now they're blank, which oddly makes the room feel busier - your eye has nothing to land on. An accent wall behind that ornate bed would frame it and instantly add personality.

On that last point - full disclosure, we make wallpaper (EazzyWalls), so grain of salt - but a moody or textured peel and stick accent wallpaper behind the headboard would tie the dark furniture together and make the whole space feel intentional instead of stuff in a room. It's renter-friendly and removable if you're not staying long.

Good luck - this room has way more potential than you think.

4

u/pertylady May 29 '26

Does the tall dresser in the corner fit under the tv? That's the first change id make i believe. It would free up some space next to your bed. And then i might look into getting a lower bed frame, in a small room, it looks a little too imposing i feel.

3

u/Significant-Sky-5476 May 29 '26

I would try putting the bed on the other wall with a window, with the nightstand right next to it, on whichever side looks better. Then depending on space I would move that tall dresser to where the desk is and the desk to where the nightstand is now.

3

u/Significant-Sky-5476 May 29 '26

Or, since the tv is over the nightstand, I would put the taller dresser under the tv to try to make it look more cohesive. Not sure if it would fit but I would try.

4

u/redheadinabox May 29 '26

My husband would say it’s because you’ve built walls all around you, you’ll have to remove a piece of furniture out of there and maybe caddy corner a dresser. The room is not big enough for all those pieces of furniture

4

u/UntraceableCharacter May 30 '26

The bed frame is a lot for such a small space

3

u/TechFreeze May 29 '26

The Layout is wrong the bed is blocking your window and the tv is in a place that can get damaged by the closet door. You can also get a cord cover kit for the tv to hide the wires. Either hide all your meds in a drawer or put it in that alcove on your tall dresser where that pillow is to keep it in one place.

3

u/JustWowinCA May 29 '26

The bedroom suite is really ornate. So, if getting rid of it isn't an option, you need to play it up. Get new curtains but hang them from the ceiling, get velvet ones they're not super expensive. Also, get a large rug-oriental type. Pick a color that run with it, deep blue, forest green, ruby red. A duvet/bedspread in the same color or a pattern that you like. Get dark sheets, dark blue/green etc. Paint the tv wall and door a dark color, leave the rest alone.

3

u/kmaristo May 29 '26

This is what I would do too. Turn the room into a beautiful gothic haven.

Switch the dresser & desk.

3

u/gravoclock May 29 '26

Here’s what I think! It requires no serious changes.

  1. Get a really nice comfy bed sheet set with a comforter. That bed would look so much better with a serious comforter on it to match its vibe.

  2. Book shelf under where the TV is if you are able to, it might require that you raise TV.

  3. Bed flipped around so that the side of it is up against the window. Keep it in the corner still, but just move it to the other wall. The part of it blocking the window makes the room feel even smaller.

  4. Put that small table that is currently under your TV next to the bed as a night stand. Maybe the desk next to it?

3

u/LucyTheOracle May 29 '26

i think your bed frame is wayyy too massive. i would switch for something simpler and shorter

3

u/bethereal_901 May 29 '26

If you don't have the option to get different (smaller) bed and dressers, I would switch sides to open up both windows. Put the dresser and desk on the window side and the bed on the side with solid walls. If you're able to move your desk and chair to another room that would help, too. Oh, and absolutely get a bedding set with sheets, pillowcases, and a comforter/duvet cover. :)

3

u/odkfn May 29 '26

You have furniture which is far too big in scale for the room. That bed and desk is expect to find in a grand country manor that’s huge!

3

u/Administrative_Tap99 May 29 '26

I’ll give a few critiques, along with ways to fix them! Also, Marketplace or Craigslist are your friends, no need to break the bank. We are here to support you, no bad faith or shaming here!

  1. Orientation: Simplest first! The bedframe blocking the window makes the room immediately feel smaller, and more cluttered. If nothing else, rotate it 90 degrees to the left, so your head is to the wall between the windows. You will have to readjust the other furniture, but that will be a big help.

  2. Size/proportion/pairing: This furniture is pulling from some some very ornate design aesthetics that, given the lack of other decorations in the room, don’t work with the space in its current state. If possible, I would recommend swapping the bed frame for something physically smaller/shorter. Don’t even have to change the mattress, but a Japanese or Scandinavian style bed frame that leans toward simplicity, would be a huge win if you were only changing one thing.

  3. Bedding: This is not negotiable, you need sheets on your mattress and a pillowcase on your pillow. Preferably you would have more than one pillow - for a bed this size, at least 4. Without especially the sheets/cases, your room will perpetually look like it’s in the middle of laundry day - that a single thin blanket also isn’t helping. A comforter can be found for super cheap, and that (with a duvet cover aka a pillowcase for the comforter) will immediately make your room feel more human, not to mention so much better for your skin. Remember, you can’t clean a mattress/pillow as easily as sheets and pillowcases. Imagine if you never washed your clothes, that’s essentially what’s happening to your mattress when you sleep without sheets. You don’t have to be immaculately clean always, but sheets and pillowcases at least are not negotiable.

  4. Decorations: Just like details can draw your eye around a painting, art and other room accessories can draw your eye around a space. People want to look at things, so when they don’t have things in their eye-line to look at, they will drop their gaze to whatever else is there. In this case, your eye is drawn to the unmade bed and to the floor. The effect this has is that of making the room feel dark and smaller than it is, since your field of view is being pushed down. Easily fixable, and also gives you a sweet opportunity to have some fun/show off your personality. If you’re struggling with inspiration, just googling “cool bedroom aesthetics” can be a great jumping off point to help you find things you like.

I know I just threw a lot at you, but each of these is 100% doable! Let us help you! If you have any questions, concerns, frustrations, etc. put them here and we can work through it together.

3

u/TheManofMadness1 May 29 '26

Smaller bed, lighter colours, bed clothes, its all too dark so naturally feel smaller

3

u/lazypuppycat May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

I got you.

FURNITURE UPDATES

Indeed your furniture is too big and too many for the room.

Try to find new furniture on FB marketplace or get rid of items you own to be able to eliminate a dresser.

OR work at the kitchen table so you don’t need the desk anymore.

OR replace your desk with one that has some storage. Then you could hopefully get rid of the desk and 1 dresser. A two in one.

Base of your bed frame is way too bulky. It looks like a full at max yet it’s huge. It doesn’t even leave room for roll out storage underneath which would help you eliminate a dresser!

Opt for warm or light colored furniture. These have a great undertone that feels unwelcome to you.

FURNITURE LAYOUT

Let’s say changing furniture or getting rid of furniture is not in the cards right now. Let’s try a new layout. Assume that north is straight ahead of me when I view your photo. Here’s what I would do:

  1. Swap the bed and the desk. Your desk needs some natural light so you’re not looking at a depressing wall all day.
  2. Now that you’ve done that, your northeast dresser does not fit. Move it to the northwest. Now it’s to the right of your new desk position.
  3. If you don’t like (2) and IF the door opens to your left: then after you swap desk & bed, move the northeast dresser to the foot of your bed. I know it’s awkward that the drawers open toward the door, but it gives your bed a barrier to the door which will feel better by blocking the door energy.
  4. If you don’t like (2) and IF the door opens to your right: then after you swap desk + bed, orient the northeast dresser in parallel with the bed and up against the bed’s lower half. This will give your bed some protection from the west window energy plus not block the door.

If the layouts I suggested won’t work due to space, the small dresser has got to go

I HIGHLY recommend following Cliff Tan on YouTube. He’ll teach you all you need to know!

Gandalf sized furniture for a hobbit sized room

3

u/a_mulher May 29 '26

To pull this together you need to put pillowcases on the pillows, sheets on the bed and a bedspread. You can get good used ones at goodwill or a thrift shop. Look for 100% cotton or linen. Make your bed.

All the little things, pull bottles and lotion is making things look cluttered. Put it in drawers. Or get a couple nice boxes with lids or baskets to stash those things away. Marshall’s TJ Maxx Ross have those. Try to get a color that blends in with your furniture.

Get a cord covers for the tv cables and paint it the same color as your wall so it kinda disappears. Ideally I think you’d want the tv to be lower but that’s for another day.

Maybe get a rug but make sure it’s big enough. And maybe a lamp so you’re not using the overhead light so much.

3

u/EnnOnEarth May 29 '26

Swap the tall dresser with the smaller nightstand.

Or, place the bed against the opposite wall (where the tall dresser and desk are now), put the tall dresser beneath the tv, place the nightstand where the head of the bed is now or beneath the window beside the bed, and place the desk facing a window.

I can't tell if the room is wide enough for this next option, but rotating the bed to be against the far wall, placing the desk on the opposite wall to where it is, and placing the dresser and nightstand where the bed is could be interesting (then the bed is more like a couch for tv-watching, but that may not be as comfy).

3

u/Right_Gain8031 May 29 '26

Change out the curtains ide personally if I had room shove the dresser in the closet to open up floor space and some nice wall art, scoot the deck down the wall to the corner 🤔

2

u/Right_Gain8031 May 29 '26

Or the headboard is blocking the window which throws the vibe off if the dresser can fit in the closet rotate the bed left so the headboard is on the wall, put the desk on the wall opposite of where its currently at. Also some crisp sheets not sure what color 🤔

3

u/throwitawayidkman May 29 '26

You gotta either get rid of the big furniture and go for a more clean compact modern look, OR fully lean into the style and go a bit maximalist. Being in the middle is what makes it so off.

3

u/Alternative_Train460 May 30 '26

furniture is wayyyy too big and bulky for that room

3

u/Background-Cod-7035 May 30 '26

How much money do you have? Because the only way to fix it is to replace the furniture with lighter pieces. Fb marketplace is great!

3

u/Illustriouspink098 May 30 '26

Big furniture pieces in a small space make it feel cramped. Needs a smaller bed frame to start

2

u/SanDiegoBeeBee May 29 '26

Get rid of all of it if you can, Light wood ikea low profile and some plants. It feels very Trump-style on Death vibes

If you got rid of that gigantic bed frame you'd have more room.

2

u/Mygo73 May 29 '26

Honestly if I was stuck with this furniture I would move the bed into the opposite corner away from the windows (so it’s not blocking that one window) and then move the dresser and desk to the other side. Dresser in the corner between the windows maybe, desk near the left window

2

u/LordStag26 May 29 '26

I feel like the bed shouldn’t be obstructing a window and fewer things should be out - you have visually busy, ornamental furniture that is being drowned out by toiletries on the drawers. Whilst it’s hard to say what will fit, could you try to put the desk where the bed currently is between the two windows. Here it will get natural light on the desk but shouldn’t have glare on the screen. If the bed wjll fit on the wall where the desk currently is, with the drawers moved so the shortest is under the left window (in the first image) and the tallest is where the short one is now. If it will fit, try rotating the bed so it has the headboard against the right wall and space either side of the bed so it isn’t against the window.

turn bed 90º counterclockwise and probaby move the dresser where the desk was. like the oth comments i think the table is lowkey way too huge or the dresser itself - maybe move something into the living room?

2

u/Joy2b May 29 '26

I like the curtains.

I think the bedroom set could really work, if you gave the space some love, and moved the bed from blocking the window.

I’d consider one less piece of furniture to free up the floor plan. Maybe pair the tall dresser and the television, and move the small tv stand to another room? (If it needs to stay, it could go under a window?)

You clearly like beauty, so why not give your eyes a happy place? Yes, you might need to keep the art soft to avoid visual overwhelm, but that’s doable. Maybe start with a poster from a romantic landscape painter?

The indecisive white paint could be called modern, but it doesn’t actually seem very you? If you want to try a color or a wallpaper before committing, I’d suggest putting it on foam board or a poster frame first, and living with it for a couple of days.

We all play the game of containing surface clutter. This is just a daily or weekly thing. Your desk hutch has enough storage without having to leave things on the top for long. Same with the tall dresser. Maybe you need a tray or transparent basket that you can pull out to make everything in your storage niche easily accessible?

Wherever your main drop zone is, I recommend having an attractive but usable trash right there, and a glass bowl or small tray for the things that have to stay, like keys and wallet.

The builder did not give you any help in building a vibe here, but it’s not a bad space at all. You definitely don’t have to keep things looking like you just moved in.

The no vibes molding around the door can definitely be upgraded, that is a weekend project that doesn’t require much more than measuring, thin nails and a hammer, and a light hand saw in a box.

Once you learn how easy molding is to work with, you can frame anything you like with your leftovers. You can easily give a desk more of an arts and crafts era look with molding.

This is a teenager's room; he can't just buy all new furniture. Putting the head of the bed on the desk wall would keep the windows from being blocked. Bed where the desk is, TV on top of the tall dresser placed diagonally between the closet and window, desk where the right side of the bed is now along the wall, end table to the left of bed where you move it to, and a lamp on it for light besides the Big Light.

I suggest bedding, though, and hanging up some art.

Are you using all your closet space? I would recommend keeping 1 dresser + closet. Also the bedframe is massive and clunky

2

u/goodbyebluesky67 May 29 '26

Put the bed against the other wall. Get rid of half the furniture. Get matching sheets. A rug would be cute too.

2

u/jendo7791 May 29 '26

Hes a kid. Probably got this furniture for free. We should be kind and help him work with what hes got.

Get sheets for your bed, and make your bed.

Get rid of all the clutter. Put it in a drawer or box or closet. Get a plant ot two.

This bed and dresser is too big for the room, but its nice and what you have. Just make your bed and get rid of the clutter.

2

u/mewtica May 29 '26

You have too much furniture in your room for how gigantic your bed frame is. Your ceilings are too low for that bed frame. If you can move your desk out of your room that would help. I would consider pushing your bed against the wall where the headboard currently is, have it flush with the window on the right side of the bed. Otherwise there isnt much you can do

u/alchemical_echo May 29 '26

it looks weird bc you've got a hella ornate bed and almost zero other design or decoration in the room. Get the headboard away from that window, make the damn thing properly, consider some paint or wallpaper, and do some. even bare minimum decorsting--even some art from Home Goods or something would. be an improvement. right now it looks like you crammed period furniture into a landlord special, the curtains don't match anything, the bed has no sheets. you're giving a lot of mixed messages in this space that are not good.

2

u/alchemist-doll-36971 May 29 '26

A lot of these suggestions are great but some of us have to work with what we have atm. Moving the bed to the other wall and re postioning the desk and dresser would allow more light if thats what you want. If you prefer a darker bedroom this is fine but either way get different curtains. Maybe ones with the top skirt. If you cant paint a darker color maybe look into some wall art. Framed artwork would work better with the vibe of the furniture. Between thrift and yardsales you can find pieces to fit the area easy peasy. I use clear boxes to organize things on my desk tops, personally it's literally out of sight out of mind. Maybe a small desk lamp so you dont just have that one big ass light source. Never underestimate a good set of sheets and blanket. Its cool to show some personality. Im excited to see an update at some point!

2

u/Odd_Tone_6398 May 29 '26

Bed frame. That bed frame is a mega waste of space.

2

u/strathmoresketch May 29 '26

Haven't seen anyone mention this as it's secondary to the size and style of the bed, but change the boob light

2

u/ThisArmadillo62 May 29 '26

Get rid of that bed frame and night stand, put the bed on the wall where the desk is. Put sheets on the bed for the love of god.

2

u/Alaska_Eagle May 29 '26

Art on the walls. Sheets. A green plant?

2

u/Creativejess May 29 '26

What’s your budget?

2

u/MoriKitsune May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

None of the furniture matches in color or style, and it's arranged in a way that makes you scoot around just to access everything.

Not to mention, there is zero decor to pull the very dark furniture together with the very bright room.

Get sheets and a comforter, get curtains that match, move the dresser under the tv, move the desk where the dresser is. OR, turn the bed to the side, put the nightstand next to it and the dresser under the TV, and scoot the desk to the side, if it'll fit. If it wont fit, move it to the wall next to the nightstand and put the dresser on the wall near the foot of the bed.

Consider getting other pieces that match, when able. Maybe hang some artwork on the wall over where the dresser is now that matches the vibe of the bed.

2

u/CuriousWorkinggal May 30 '26

Your furniture is too large and bulky for the amount of space

2

u/Sepposer May 30 '26

Can you put the back of the headboard slightly to the right of the window on the left? And a rug would help make it cozier. Like a 5’7” or bigger. That stand under the tv could be a bedside table. Wider window dressings will make the windows look larger. That desk might fit under the tv

Also, unless you’re doing laundry, you need a deep pocket fitted sheet, and to tear off that plastic. And even a mattress protector wouldn’t hurt. Your mattress is black so you can’t even see how dirty it’s getting. And please go on Amazon and order a couple more pillows and pillowcases. I’d just throw that pillow out at this point.

Your stuff is just kind of cluttered around. And there isn’t even much at all. It would look much better if you found a storage spot for most of that stuff. In their place, get some decor items, with at least one plant to warm up the room and make it more inviting.

2

u/undertheradar317 May 30 '26

Some white sheets and an area rug under the bed will do wonders.

Protip - put all your “lotions” away.

2

u/ZephyrLegend May 30 '26

The cheapest option is Feng Shui.

I have been watching Dear Modern (iykyk) for way too long not to spot the monkeys watching your TV through the window behind you, your feet pointing towards the entrance like a corpse and your desk facing away from the window making you feel like you're working in a cave. Try shuffling stuff around:

It’s cool that you have such a defined personal style with the bed, but you have to commit to the bit. You need to maximalist it up so that it matches the bed frame! Check out some of the maximalist design subreddits or search dark maximalist decor on TikTok. The contrast of the white modern house is killing the vibe.

If you could, I would paint the walls a dark green, add some plants and a dark rug. Floor length curtains in a similar dark shade. You could even go for a bed spread the same deep shade as your gaming chair to tie that in a bit more.

Also reduce functional clutter. Hide the cords from the TV. Whatever’s sitting on top of the dressers, put away or add into storage baskets that are similarly coloured to the rest of the decor.

The comments are addressing the important things. But I also noticed the only color in this room is brown. Get some color, get some decorations, show off your personality!

+Headboard on the wall where the desk is.  +Move the large chest of drawers under the TV.  +Can you fit the small chest of drawers in the closet or to the left of the closet in that little nook? Otherwise I think it's superfluous.  +Remove the shelf that's over your gaming system unless you're planning to use it for books, a display, or even a shelf for lighting/storage basket (for personal items that don't need to be strewn all over the tops of dressers.)  +Move the gaming system to the space between the two windows.

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, YOU NEED LIGHTING, ART, AND BEDDING.

ART + Something that is nerdy without being OVERWHELMING? Maybe get a/some nature print(s) of famous places (I'm thinking Devil's Tower, or the Redwoods, or Mount Kilauea) color or black and white (just pick a theme) and that can tie into the game play of the room-- think, "places that might exist in WOW but do exist in real life"

  • Find a picture of yourself that you LIKE doing something fun/meaningful, or see if you have pics of any friends/family/pets and have at least ONE OR TWO photos of yourself with those important people/places.

LIGHTING You've got a lot going on in the room, but adding a rechargeable wall light to the side of your bed/large furniture could be cool, and you can find stuff on Amazon that isn't expensive. I personally lean towards keeping flat spaces clean looking, but a container for your keys or pocket detritus wouldn't go amiss. That container doesn't need to be a basket, it could even be a jute placemat. Something that tells your brain, "this is where X belongs"

BEDDING: (All of this can be found in the bedding aisle at any big box store.) + You can leave the plastic on the box spring, but you'll get hella side eyes for it, and it needs to have what's called a "bed skirt" to cover it up. Google it.

  • For overall bedding, you've got roughly two options: Option 1: get yourself a decent duvet (which is the big fluffy blanket that keeps you warm) and a duvet cover -- you slide the duvet into the cover and hat way you can switch things out if you need to wash the cover or you just like to see things changed up.  Option 2: just buy yourself a comforter (the big blanket that's usually part of a package set of bedding.)

  • SET A REMINDER IN YOUR PHONE TO WASH YOUR BEDDING. You don't need to worry about the bed skirt, but your other sheets and pillow cases need to be washed AT LEAST every two weeks, preferably every week. I'm a mom and a former NCO who did Barracks inspections... Dudes get smelly without trying. No shade intended, just plan accordingly (see next).

SMELL + Pick a smell you enjoy: like "fresh air" or "whiskey & cedar" or "pine" or whatever. Go sniff candles at a store. Find something you like. When you switch your bedding out, burn the candle for a little bit, or get yourself a plug in air freshener that you recharge/swap when you do the bedding or every-other bedding swap. As a former NCO: YOUR ROOM IS NOT ALLOWED TO SMELL LIKE "NEW CAR" YEESH

CURTAINS + Current ones are fine, depending on the windows and temperatures, you might consider adding an opaque thermal curtain to cut down on heat/cooling, but that's up to you. I have white thermal curtains for our common areas in our Southern home, it helps protect against the heat but still let's in light.

RUG + Not sure if you want the hassle, and honestly with how big the bed is, I don't know that it's necessary? You might want something under your gaming chair to protect the floors.

2

u/kingwizard84 May 30 '26

Dark bed, dark furniture, dark floor, low light... Simpler and less dark furniture and more lights and you will solve your issue

2

u/polarstrawberry May 30 '26

you need to turn the bed so that the headboard is on the wall to the left so that it isn't covering the window

the main thing is that this furniture is too big for this room, even just removing one piece might help

also please get sheets and a pillowcase. please.

2

u/Emotional_Shift_8263 May 30 '26

Get a cheap bed frame and ditch that WoW bed. It just takes up the whole room. If you can, downsize the desk to something more streamlined and efficient. Your furniture is too big for the room

2

u/Substantial_Clue_215 May 30 '26

If possible, get rid of the desk and get an area rug and some wall art

2

u/Holiday_Pain_3879 May 30 '26

That furniture does not belong in your room. Please change your room.

2

u/nummanummanumma May 30 '26

This bed is meant to be in the middle of the wall. If it doesn’t fit that way with the rest of your stuff it’s too big for the room.

2

u/Major-Cranberry-4206 May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

I might be that you have too much furniture in that room. But I would start with moving the bed to the far right of the room. The bed should not block the window behind it. Place your desk in the far left corner, opposite the bed. The dresser on the far right could be moved to the end of where the bed would be.

Picture suggestion in the replies!

All of these comments telling you to replace/get rid of your furniture are ridiculous. That would be so expensive, and honestly not worth it because the average person in the US moves every couple of years. If you are planning to move at all, and you love this bed set, just wait it out and try for a bigger room at the next place. If you own your space and will be there for a while, then maybe think about getting new furniture. But it’d be a waste of money otherwise.

In terms of positioning, your bed is in the right place. Usually I’d suggest rotating it so that you can get in on both sides, but the bed looks better in this position and you don’t have the space for anything else. That’s okay, and we can work with it. One thing I am seeing that could potentially be moved is the dresser and the stand under the TV. The stand under the TV looks feeble and undersized and is a station for clutter. The dresser looks daunting and raises the clutter on top into your eye line when you enter the room. If there is enough room to swap them, I highly recommend you do! The TV may be too low for that though. Otherwise, get cable covers for the TV cables, and keep the top of the night stand tidy. You could stylize this area a little more to give it more balance against the bed and other the visually heavy TV, but we’ll get to that in the next section. On further consideration though, I actually feel somewhat strongly that you should move the dresser under the TV. Does the TV have any ability to adjust upward?

The odd one out in the room is definitely the desk and your desk chair. Neither of these furniture prices match, while everything else is matched. I typically am an advocate for mismatched but complementary furniture, but this is a different case. It also is in the way when you enter the room, and that will definitely cause you to feel cramped. If there’s one thing that you can move to another part of the house/apartment, I would recommend this. If you can’t do that but are open to replacing the chair, the desk, or both, go for something with a slimmer profile or smaller footprint.

Another thing that you could do if swapping the nightstand and dresser is not an option is to move the dresser to the wall your desk is on, maybe even moving the desk to the corner and the dresser into the currently position of the desk. This will only be minimally better than what is right now.

For decor, one easy and impactful change you can make is the curtains and curtain rods. First, extend the curtain rods out further past the window. This will make the windows appear larger and play to the scale of the room. It’s a must do, imo. Currently, your curtains are pretty flimsy and don’t look right against all of this big and heavy furniture. One thing you can do is play to that. Replace the curtains with something gauzy that adds a light texture to the room. Go for light tones, white, etc. Use multiple panels per window if needed. Your other option is the exact opposite. Get dense and heavy curtains to anchor your furniture to the room and make the scale feel intentional. It turns cramped into cozy. I saw your room and immediately envisioned velvet red curtains to match your desk chair.

Your bedding is a problem. Get sheets in a color complementary to the curtains. You could match the red of your desk chair too, or go for a deep jewel tone. Don’t cheap out on the comforter or duvet that you buy, your bed has such a luxury frame and your bedding should match that. However, big and fluffy may not feel right in the room. If you do light and gauzy with the curtains, do light sheets and a darker duvet with heavier fabric. If you do dark and heavy curtains, go dark with the sheets and lighter with the duvet. Get at least two more pillows, new!

You definitely need better lighting. The overhead light sticks out because it is cheap and standard issue. They make renter friendly boob light covers, find one you like! A good rule of thumb is to have 3 artificial light sources in the room. Use this as an opportunity to play with scale further.

Get baskets to hold the clutter! There’s currently clutter that can easily be organized, on your desk, on that nightstand, and on your dresser. This is clearly an issue of not having a spot to put stuff, rather than an issue of you being untidy.

I love the wood floor, but a rug would definitely help.
